Welcome my children! No, they sounds too cliche..
Anywho, this is a roleplay group focused on a sci-fi universe. It is based roughly on the Galactic Civilizations backstory, but thats just about the gist of what you have to follow. The background behind the story is this:
The Humans Arrive
In the year 2117 an Arcean probe arrived at Earth. The humans had turned Earth into a relatively united planet that was prosperous and had a wealth of energy thanks to the development of fusion power. The Arceans (an alien race) saw the value in fusion power, for none of the other races had developed such an advanced form of energy despite their advancement in other areas. As a result, the Arceans quickly transferred the plans of a star gate to the humans.
The Arcean star gate plan didn't include a way to turn off the star gate. In essence, once turned on, the humans would not be able to turn it off. Whether the Arceans were planning to conquer Earth or not remains unknown. However, the star gate was never built. The star gate plans confirmed countless theories on space travel. It also become quite clear to the leading scientists that the star gate was limited in use because of its size and cost. But they also concluded that the problem with the star gate was purely because it was designed around a lack of power—a problem the humans did not have.
Research firms across the planet quickly concluded that a propulsion system could be developed, using the theories from the star gate, that would enable individual ships to travel on their own. Those same individual ships would also be able to travel much faster than they could through a star gate. A ship going through a star gate would still take months, even years, to go relatively short distances. With this new drive system, that time would be halved with improvement for even greater relative speeds.
Hyper Drive
The new drive system was called Hyper Drive. And what was probably one of the most generous and costly mistakes in human history, the reckless humans did not secure the secrets behind fusion power or hyper drive. Politicians and activists considered nearly unlimited energy to be a basic "human" right. Fusion power had nearly eliminated poverty and a whole range of human weaknesses. With energy being free, food production, manufacturing, and transportation became far less expensive. Sharing fusion technology with the other races seemed like the "human" thing to do. Hyperdrive really wasn't much of a leap once the mechanics behind the star gates were understood combined with fusion power. In short, all of the major races soon had hyper drive. Each empire had their
Unfortunately, a great civil war enveloped the Arcean empire, all but nullifying all of their technological advances. On the other hand, the Hyperdrive technology was no secret, and soon, almost all of the somewhat advanced, space-faring civilizations had the technology in their hands.

NOTE: When playing, no one can be the Arceans, but people can be the Humans (or Terran Confederation). But, to keep things balanced, the Humans won't have any special advantages.
