Make sure you comment on why each category received the score you gave it. Tally up the points for each creation and list them at the bottom.
EXAMPLE OF JUDGEMENT
PRESENTATION: 7/10 - Great vig, but should have used a backdrop to cover up the messy workstation in the background.
CLEANNESS: 6/10 - A lot of gaps in the bricks. Looks too much like a bunch of pieces and not a cohesive whole.
PARTS USAGE: 8/10 - The piece used for the bulb on his back is REALLY clever.
ORIGINALITY: 10/10 - The only entry that was minifig-scale. Nobody else built with the studs facing front either.
RECOGNIZABILITY: 7/10 - Pretty clear, but it could be mistaken for Ivysaur
This is done once for each entry. You should probably write this in another program like textpad so you can look at the entries at the same time. Then copy and paste your results into a post. Permalink
Ok, I can't edit the initial post so I'll just post the March rules here. They may work well and they may not. We'll see.
The categories are now:
Resemblance (formerly 'recognizability'): Very basic. How close is the creation to the actual Pokemon? If you can immediately recognize it, I'd personally say that's worth five points. Add points to that for additional details that the creation includes. You can and should take part usage into account here and award more points for details cleverly executed. Worth ten possible points.
Flow (formerly 'cleanness'): This is a judgement of the build itself. If the creation looks like a bunch of legos, is showing too many studs, or is just kind of messy, you should assign low points in this category. A good score should be awarded to creations that look like the a creature and not just a pile of parts. Worth ten possible points.
Creativity (formerly 'parts usage'): I'm changing this one a bit so that it doesn't overlap as much with 'Originality'. This category assesses the use of parts in the context of just the creation. You should not take the other entries in to account for this category. If the creation uses parts in a way you think is clever, it should score well, EVEN IF OTHER ENTRIES DO THE SAME THING. Worth FIVE possible points.
Originality: This is where you get to compare the creation to the other entries. If it's unique in style, scale, technique, part usage, etc, it gets points. Worth FIVE possible points.
Presentation: This is how well the creation is presented to you. You should judge the whole page, meaning that you look at all the photos. If you can clearly see all aspects of the creation, that's worth good points. If there are a couple blurry pictures in the bunch, it shouldn't count against it if there are enough that are in focus. THIS CATEGORY IS ONLY WORTH FIVE POSSIBLE POINTS!
BONUS POINTS- Vignette: If the creation includes a vignette, you can give it up to five bonus points depending on its quality. THIS IS THE ONLY CATEGORY THE VIGNETTE APPLIES TO. You should not consider the quality of the vig when judging the other categories, only the pokemon itself.
BONUS POINTS- Special Requirements: For some contests, we may give you a special requirement. For example, it may be that your creation be minifig-scale or that you use a certain part somewhere. If the creation fulfills the requirement, they get an extra five points.
I know this is different, so I'll let people ask questions in this thread. I'll be deleting them after I answer them to keep the thread clean. Permalink
As a judge, I personally thought it worked really well. My numbers after going through the criteria matched my overall impressions of the entries. I won't disregard your opinions, but I'd like to hear from the other judges before I change anything.
However, I can see how with two ten-point categories about being different, the scores would be weighted away from resemblance, which really should be the main thing. I want creative entries to get extra points, but I may consolidate the two categories so it's not as important. Permalink
Part of me thinks that there should be a total of 50 points without bonuses from vigs or requirements. And I do think it would be a good idea to combine creativity and originality. The way they are they account for 4/9ths of the possible score without any bonuses. Permalink
Quoting Jeffery Lautenslager
I think we should get rid of ,Originality and creativity, because it takes away points from people's creations even though their creation is far better than it is marked. This should be all about how good the creatuion is, and does it compare to the actual pokemon. Besides every ones creation is goping to be different in their own way. The studless stuff shouldn't be accounted for as well, as some creations do look fine with the shown studs. For the past to months I have seen sopme creations lose a heck of alot of points just because of originality and creativity, even though their creation was awesome. any way I hope you guys take mu opinon to account. :)
I agree with Jeffrey's statements. I believe originality is an important part of the contest, but resemblence to the pokemon should maybe consist of 20 points toward the total score. Permalink
Just because judging is supposed to start tomorrow, I hastily made creativity and originality worth 5 points each now. We'll see how that works. I should've worked more on these rules, I know. I'll make more necessary changes before next time, I promise. Permalink
