I think you might want to wocus on "weight" categories instead of "theme" categories.
But in any case, before dividing the contest in categories you should check the number of contestants, and think about how many of them are likely to really post something.

So do something like this?
Mini Mech: Under 150 peices
Medium: 0ver 300
Large: No lower than 500 peices

I like this one. You should do it based by this one, but how about two other categories.

Piloted and unpiloted?

that would double the categories, but it sounds pretty fun. building a big, unpiloted mech would be tough though. so would counting all those pieces. lol

It cdoesnt have to exactly the amount, just try to Estimate pretty accurately.

Or maybe it could be height instead of pieces?

I like yuri's suggestion of categories based on size. Otherwise, it would be hard to judge a small mech against a large detailed one. For that reason, I think it would be important to make the size part of the category. Then, as an additional way to segment the categories you could add another requirement. That may sound confusing, so here's an example:

Category 1: Steampunk Mech (Large Size)
Category 2: Classic Mech (Medium Size)
Category 3: Bionicle Mech (Small Size)
Category 4: System Mech (Large Size)
Category 5: Non-weaponized Mech (Medium Size)
Category 6: Non-piloted Mech (Small Size)

NOTE: This is just my idea for the categories to be STRUCTURED, and not ACTUAL CONTENT of the categories (although I think a couple of my examples are good ideas)

ALSO NOTE: I think five or six categories would be a good idea. That way, since we're judging based on a 1-5 point scale, with several categories, ties will be less likely and an overall winner will be easily determined.

ALSO ALSO NOTE: again, the sizes in my category examples are just to show how the categories can be set up (with a content requirement and a size requirement for each category). In no way would I expect everyone to build two huge mechs in a month. More likely, I might suggest 1 large mech, 2 medium mechs, and three small mechs - each with its own content requirement (for example, the large mech must be steampunk, etc.) hence, six categories.

Don't give up yet flare. I know some of you YFOLs and TFOLs will feel outmatched by the grown-ups. Don't. Personally, I followed the 2010 moc athalon all the way through, thinking about how i would judge. sure, i base my opinions mostly on build strength, BUT originality and innovation are HUGE factors for what I consider interesting.
