YES!
I'm there absolutely there. Its held in Christchurch which is where I live.
The website doesn't really say too many details but I've established email contact with the organisers and might join up with their LUG and attend their meetings and such so will be able to find out more details... advertise it around. Hope to see you there Tim.

I'll be exhibiting, not too sure exactly what yet...

Hey guys, check out this site - http://www.kiwibricks.org.nz/ It's fairly new, but it's looking promising!

EDIT - Also an Email the organizer sent me, if it helps:

Following up from your comment on lug 4/2: the intention is to setup the room in the evening of july 13th. You could then setup your exhibit early on the 14th. The show opens at 9am. If you have a complex exhibition you may also setup in the evening of the 13th.

We will a more detailed schedule soon…

Don't ship it. Bring it with you, packaged well inside your pack. That's how my build survived the trip to Chicago and it went through 8 loads and unloads of planes and was fine.
Shipping it just doesn't work at all.

This is true, I am going to work out how feesable it is to get a couple days off work and drive down. Although for one weekend this option seems a bit pricey, maths says it only saves money if the holiday is longer than a week. I will see...

Nonsense! If you stayed a week you'd have to pay a week's worth of accomodation.

:) I have relatives I can stay with so accom is never costly. Its always flights+rental vs petrol+ferry, it requires around 7 days of having a rental car before the ferry option becomes cheaper. It is still an option though, for a Lego convention I am bias towards it being worth it :)

Its always worth it. For Lego.

Hey I'm just thinking, I could actually get this model down there if I use Fastway. I have used them before and they are pretty good with their service. Do you think I could send it to your work and attn it to you? Or I could send it to my relatives place and get it delivered on the day I arive.

Is this convention in NZ? I wish we had more lego conventions and fairs in AUS and NZ. Some official stores would be nice too ;).

Yeah this convention is going to be held in Christchurch, with the theme REBUILD. Should be a cracker! I am working on my exhibit at the moment. Should be fairly good I think.

You're more than welcome to send your moc to my work, anybody is. However, it all depends on the size/weight of the thing. I have not got a car, I bus to/from work and have a 30min walk from bus stop in town to my place... I'd gladly receive people's mocs if they are small.

I really would suggest you bring it with you in your pack. You need to build it kind of modular style if you can, so it can be dismantled into smaller, easily packaged up parts and then rebuilt. Take LOTS of photos. LOTS! (I cannot stress that enough) of all the fine details and difficult construction areas. Then break that thing down and package each section into a separate box with lots of bubble wrap. I would even suggest you use glad wrap and tightly wrap the section first, then box it. That way you can kind of press the pieces back together inside the wrap before taking it off.

That is how I got Bree to Chicago perfectly intact. I only had to rebuild the roof. http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/276791
and that went from Chch to Sidney, Sidney to Los Angeles, LA to Las Vegas, Vegas to Chicago.

I am concerned a bit thought that the organisers don't fully appreciate just how long it can take people to rebuild their exhibits when they have travelled to the show from all over. The doors open to the public at 9am and we are expected to set up before that? No way. Most people are going to need to set up the day before.

I also find the "REBUILD" theme really limiting.

I will do a small token "rebuild" moc,to keep the organisers happy, but otherwise tough. My main moc will not be in keeping with that theme. Modern architecture just ain't my bag.

k, thanks. do they have computer down there? is that why I take photos? so I can compare it to the creation before I send it down there...

I'm more of a castle guy, so it's complex for me, too...

I'm gonna do Lancaster Park, I thnk. It got damaged in the quakes, and I love sports... it just clicks for me... but it's a complex shape, so it'll be a challenge... but I am up for it ;)

I don't really understand that question...

all I meant about the photos is that your build might get smashed during transit. Reference photos will be handy to have so you can rebuild it. If you can rebuild it fine just from memory then by all means do that, but I prefer to look at reference photos.

I'm not sure it the organisers will supply a computer for you to look through images, but I will be bringing a laptop with me if that helps.

I purchased 2000x red 2x4 bricks and 1000x blue 2x2 bricks yesterday, i will use it to make a latice wireframe which keeps hollow mountains stable. Cliff faces are very easy to press inwards if they are not supported.

if you don't mind, that might be helpful... we'll see how things turn out. I might just be able to use my camera for reference pics...

that's quite an order!!! can't wait!

Battle at Elemental Plateau was memorised because it was all built it the same style with the same geometry. But for all my other builds reference pics would have been handy. Good advice to adhere to :)

I've been wondering - would it be smarter to build something that can be divided into sections for easy transport, or one large, and hopefully solid, build that won't (theoretically) break?

I don't think there's any right or wrong answer to that. I've transported one build in sections which survived well and another (the tiny float I sent to America for Bricks by the Bay last month) as a solid build. The latter arrived, according to Mister Bones, in quite a few pieces... however, in all honestly I didn't actually package that very well and it was quite a flimsy and delicate build. I think if your moc is quite a solid structure it should be fine.

Don't get too hung up on whether or not it will survive transit because it probably wont... its all part of the fun of a Lego show to rebuild and set up. We love building! That's what we do, so its actually fun to put it all back together.

Hey Tim, sorry i've been offline for a while now. http://www.northsouth.co.nz/ is where you want to go for cheap cabins. I havn't found any cheap flights and at this stage it looks marginal whether I will make it or not.

lol, that's fine!

they look good, thanks! Have you been there before?

I've found flights at $70 without suitcases... you'd probably have to send your creation down early, anyway, right?

Sorry Tim, I missed your question a while back about sending your build to me. Are you coming on not, do you know for sure... I'm a bit outside the loop at the moment. How big is your build? It will be difficult for you to send it to me as I don't have a car and will be taking my display on the bus to the show and that will be tricky enough...

Hmm.. your real name is Richard Brown? :P

Yep, had a hunch 18 was you. That and I think you're the only girl listed. Great you have something to display ^_^

I need to finish mine up, quickly -_-;

Mine's almost done. I'm doing Mr Xenomurphy's Super hero contest which begins 28/06/12 so need to start focusing on that... unfortunately my LABS build has devoured most of my bricks! Might have to just post Catwoman on a plate...

My model is about 65% complete. This weekend will be a hectic time of bricking and Underworld DVDs haha! The water looks amazing as usual and i'm now worried the rest or it wont live up to the waters standard. I havn't added any greenery yet as there are still some structures which I need to complete.

You underestimate your abilities mate. It will of course be outstanding and blow people away once finished, even if you only build to 50% of your abilities it will still blow people away. Can't wait to see it.

My build is about 90% done. I've taken a break to do the super hero contest of Xeno's, but only a short break. I could do better with my entry I think (even with most of my coloured bricks taken up from my LABS build), but can't spend too long on it because my LABS layout is sitting gathering dust and I must start to focus on it again.

Was sharing a chair, but I ended up standing for the most part and keeping an eye on curious hands :P

Day 2's was huge. Must have been at least twice as much as Saturday. Heard that the line outside reached all the way to the carpark.

Yeah, was about to suggest inviting Nick too lol

Great idea, you could build a quarry for your dump trucks and things. Just don't hide Lightening McQueen or Woody in there!

I've been having big ideas too. Thinking I might try my hand at a castle or huge manor house with interiors and garden.

There wasn't too much time before the show on Sunday, so I ended up using the time to take some (poor) photos of the exhibits and to help prepare for the imminent flood of public viewers. Maybe next year!
