O_o great now ill have to find an excuse for broken buildings and a unnatural winter,got a good excuse?that i could use to make it true

You can have them take cover in a bunker deep in the ground. Then when they get up they see a ship glassing a few miles away. They believe it is safe to come out so they trek across molten ground for a few hours. Then they arrive at a city thats all destroyed and some of it completely gone.
