What is a rifle?
Join to comment
I was wondering what you think the definition of a rifle shoud be. Dictionary.com says a rifle a shoulder firearm with spiral grooves cut in the inner surface of the gun barrel to give the bullet a rotatory motion and thus a more precise trajectory. But Py Brick proved that wrong with a picture of a pistol with a stock.

In reply to Chris A. from the previous topic: The FN P90 is considered a PDW, Personal Defense Weapon. The 5.7x45mm cartridge is a pistol round and it is even used in the FN Five-seveN pistol.

Hey Py, I was just wondering if you still had the sopmod stock built?
Yeah, I do. I made the stock lever work, so now it doesn't need that pin. I just need to put the rubber band back.

I am going to make a CQB (picture on my g36k page) and it has a stock just like that. School ends for me next monday. If I get strait A's my mom said she would buy me some legos. I was going to order some more black pieces off the lego website but this would be better! What is your price?
| June 11, 2009, 10:04 pm
I did a piece count and figuring in my building time and all of the functionality, my price is $50 with free shipping.

I was thinking 50$ too. How would I give you the money?

You can pay through PayPal, that is the most secure method. Pay to PyBrick@gmail.com and I will ship it as soon as I see the transaction.

Wish me luck. I have 4 more finals to go and hopefully you'll have a sale! (one of my finals is CAD, computer assisted drafting, and I made a g36)

Good luck, sale aside. Can you email me your dwg file? I'd like to take a look at it.

dwg file? i'm sorry i am not sure what that means.

I am sorry. What program do you use for your CAD class? AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CADKEY, or something else (CNC programs include MasterCAM, GibbsCAM). AutoCAD saves files with a .dwg extension.

I have AutoCAD but I do the work at school.

AutoCAD is a very powerful tool. I didn't expect you to have a copy at home, it's a $1k+ program! Anyway, is it possible to copy the file onto a USB drive? Also, did you use brick style for the G36 or did you draw it 'normally'? I made my Lego AK-47 on AutoCAD in bricks! I even printed it out and showed all my classmates.

I have that class tomorrow and I will try to get it onto a flash drive.

My grades were good enough so I should be able to buy it today or tomorrow. Would I be getting the one with the pin or the working lever?

When someone says "rifle", I immediately think about a Gewehr 43, or a Lee Enfield SMLE. A carbine, actually.

Thanks for reminding me about carbines. A carbine is a short rifle, and any pistol with a stock is called a carbine, thus they are short rifles.

You inspired me to really work at the stock lever, although I had originally wanted to do one. I'll send you the LDD of the design when I have enough time, maybe over the weekend.

Jack your gatling gun is great but it is not a rifle. So please don't add any machine guns/gatling guns to the group. Also, no blaster pistols or stuff like that. Rifles only please! Thanks.

But we can't accept it as a rifle, because they still fire pistol ammunition (.45 ACP, .22, 9x19, etc.).

No it does not. All the gun needs to be is chambered for a rifle cartridge. Now I know someone is going to ask me what is a rifle cartridge... If the gun is chambered for .223 or above then your fine, and if it is a fantasy or Halo gun then whatever it is classified in the game is fine.

SO a rifle needs to be a gun capable of shoulder firing rifle sized rounds(length not caliber) and has rifling( as opposed to a musket, with smoot walls in the barrel). A carbine is just a ;ight wheight rifle (it was a full sized one but got scaled down a bit) A pistol with a stock is either for extra control like for a machine pistol. It also need to shoot solid objects like bulets, not energy) Most rifles have pretty long barrels, but this it fo extra power and accuracy. This is just my guess of what a rifle is.

Research, good sir, is a useful thing. Technically, anything with a rifled barrel is a rifle. That means your .50 BMG anti-material holy-s##t-run-for-cover gun is technically just as applicable as a .22 handgun. By today's standards, a rifle fires a 5.45x39mm, 7.62x39mm, 5.56x45mm, or 7.62x51mm (there's probably a Russian battle rifle cartridge I'm forgetting). Also, your rifle can technically be called an LMG. The Steyr AUG and L85A1 are both upsized to serve the same purpose as an M240 or M60, for example. Some assault rifles get downsized to SMG caliber rounds. Ever hear of the AUG Para It's used by law enforcement and fires a 9mm round. You get a grey area between SMGs and rifles, and rifles and LMGs. I'm not sure if you'd call an FN P90 a rifle due to the power of the bullet it fires, or an SMG due to the size and size of the bullet it fires. Is the British Bren a machine gun, or is it an automatic rifle?
I must agree that Its hard to tell the difference between a smg and a rifle since germany made the assault rifle, which is a combination of both. It uses a medeum sized round, so automatic fire can be controlable, but its part machine gun, because it has full auto, So really I think assault rifle is a new catagory of gun. The P90 is both an smg, and a light weigh assault rifle. I realy think rifle is no longer a type of gun, and more an adjetive for a gun, if that makes any sence.
