Hello and Welcome to Scuderia Ferrari.

This team probably needs the least explaining out of any of them, so I'll just give a bit of background to the era I've chosen:

Ferrari entered in many different types of racing (much like they do today), including Formula 1 (or Grand Prix back then), Le Mans / Endurance and Sports Car Racing.

---Successes:---
Ferrari won the World Sportscar Championship thirteen times, the Mille Miglia eight times, the Targa Florio seven times, and the 24 hours of Le Mans nine times, including 6 years in a row from 1960 to 1965.

---Rivals:---
Our closest rivals are Ecurie Ecosse, who we'd race against regularly, Maserati (who's transporter is the same type as Ferrari's older 642s) and Alan Mann. Others not yet entered in this group include Jaguar, Aston Martin, Shelby etc.

Although Porsche and Lotus were huge competitors to Scuderia Ferrari, the teams entered here are about 10 years later than the era we're representing.

---More Info:---
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scuderia_Ferrari#1960s

---Joining Scuderia Ferrari---

My Transporter is a 1959 Fiat 682, which replaced Ferrari's old smaller Fiat 642s. I believe they had two and used them until 1965 when they were sold to a non-works Ferrari team.

My truck is going to be used for Sports and Le Mans / Endurance in this group. There is one racing car slot left for someone to fill, although anyone is welcome to build the Scuderia Ferrari spares truck or the other transporter (allowing for another 3 cars!).

Current team members are Thomas Graafland and myself.

Finally, the Fiat now has four XL motors, and should happily be able to pull 3 cars. In fact, there's actually room for another 4... but that would be silly. Or would it? Yes it would. But maybe...

The Ferrari one? I don't know whether they had one - I've found loads of old Fiat and Ford trucks used by Ferrari (or one of the many private Ferrari teams) but I don't know which one is correct for the factory team for the '60s.

Hello, and welcome!!

We'd love to have you in this group : )

In answer to your question; agh, sort of.
Whilst the BB512 is in the right age range for the group, it's too new for the transporter, which was used up until 1965. Also, having looked into it, Ferrari never ran the 512 as part of Scuderia Ferrari (the 'works' team); they sold the cars to other teams to race (much like Porsche, Aston Martin etc do).

So, you have 2 options:
1. Fill the slot with a pre-1966 Scuderia Ferrari racing car.
2. Start a race team of you own with the BB512 - you'll need to research which team/s ran them and then pick one. You'll then be 'team owner' of that team.

Hope that all makes sense, great to have you on board! : )

P.S. The North American Racing Team (NART) ran BB512s - they're a great team - you could become team owner if you wanted?

I think he used some of those thinner tires like on my VW Beetles and then put some of the 'old' wagon wheels inside the wider end of the opening.

Hi Allan,

sorry that I've (again) not been very active in the group..... :-( Watching the discusion, I see you've decided your car?

For the wheels I do maybe have some help: for the wheels I used this ones:

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2695c01

They are about the right scale for your car I think....
I've seen Jens M. using these wheels too, but for the rims he used i think these wheels:

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2470

or these:

Hope this is helpful...

I think Porsche had two trucks too (they certainly ran up to six cars at Le Mans, and Ford ran eight (!!) GT40s one year to secure a win, so we could re-open some of the other teams too

I'm not sure. They had two transporters, but as each transporter has a parts bay they may not have needed a parts truck. However, there were (and still are) lots of private Ferrari teams who did have parts trucks, e.g. NART, Maranello Concessions and Gelo Racing (lots of pics on Google of these).

1971 is well within the limits : )

The Alfa Romeo van is a little early, but would also be a Scuderia Ferrari support vehicle (just from a different era), so personally I'd prefer the Gelo Ferrari, as otherwise we could end up with loads of the same team stretching across the time period and not much variety.

Yes, you can absolutely be in more than one team : ) As long as no-one hogs loads of entry slots in the group it's OK! : )

If you choose to build the Gelo truck (or cars) it would start a new team (they have nothing to do with Scuderia Ferrari except they sometimes used Ferrari cars). If you want to build a Scuderia Ferrari truck you could build the second transporter, either another 682 or the slightly smaller 642 (which Lego Builders is also creating for his Scuderia Maserati team).

I was thinking the TR that won Le Mans, although I think officially it wasn't run by the Scuderia team. I was also thinking a GTO would be nice though, so I haven't nailed it down yet

I'm having a tough time figuring out how to make the front of a Series I 250 GTO, he three air intakes are tough! Do you have an idea of how to make it? I'll probably make mine 14-wide, so as to stay in scale with my other cars. You? If I can nail the 250 GTO Series I, I think I make more in different color schemes. Wasn't there a blue and yellow one?

Hi guys, I already wrote a few lines in the general conversation... If it's OK with the team I'd like to see my old Testarossa become a part of it and to proudly race with the prancing horse on its fenders :)

Ciao, Jens

For John Daniels; Continuation from the comment on my Fiat 682:

Hi John

Thanks for looking up CRTs! Have a look round and see if you'd like to be part of it.

As for joining Scuderia Ferrari with a transporter of your own; read through the rules and check your pieces (or bank balance!) and see if it's appropriate. If so let us know and you're in! : )

Good luck

Thank you for the invite Ape!

I think that there might be enough red in my collection to build the Fiat 642.

I also believe that there is enough room inside to put a RC LEGO transmission, which should allow me to use a lesser amount of motors and still have torque and then higher speeds. I'll have to buy some wheels for it, but otherwise I should be good, parts wise.

Thanks, and I hope that I can add another transporter to the team! --John

Cool, and Thank you!

I'll get started on the chassis and drive train as soon as the transmission parts and wheels arrive.

Cool, which wheels are you going for? Don't under-estimate the amount if red pieces you'll require though! Think of a no., then double it. Then add 200 more.

Some of the newer ones, off of the unimog or the larger ones.
Hmm, I guess I better start working so that I'm able to buy more red pieces.

I think Unimog wheels ARE the largest ones available right now. And if you're going for that scale you might want to multiply the estimate Ape gave you by 2 again. Either way, this should be massively big.

I don't own any of the Unimog wheels so I have no idea what size they are. So the smaller wheels, that look like the Unimog wheels.

I think that my transporter will be around the size of Ape's (maybe a little larger), but with a lot more functions.

I'm planning on adding working air brakes and air suspension, a RC transmission (with the same amount of gears as the real truck), a motorized lift, and a working I6 engine.
The service/parts bay will be filled up with all of the motors and such.

So it should be very cool and functional (that's the plan at least).

Sounds awesome! I don't think it'd be any bigger than mine though (although it does sound like it'll be better!); mine uses the biggest wheels/tyres LEGO have ever made

That sounds very cool! You'll need huge amount of bricks though! Even small trucks need a lot of bricks and you seem to be planning to build something very big. I thik also you'll have to put in a lot of time to get everything solid. In the beginning of the building process it might seem solid, but the final product will always be heavier then you'd expect.

I'm very interested to see what you'll come up with!

Thanks! That just shows how much inexperience I have building large scale LEGO vehicles. Do you know what the true scale of your transporter is?

Quoting Thomas Graafland

I'm planning on building the frame out of studless TECHNIC and then adding the body work on top.
Thank you for the advice on the weight I'll have to remember that when I'm building.

Hi Timothy

Sorry, I did see your comment on my Fiat and forgot to reply. Er... I had the wheels and scaled it from there. I can probably work it out, but as a guess I think 1:20ish? Truck builders; does that sound right?

Actually, looking at other trucks with the same wheels it might be 1:13.

I'll measure it later and find out!

Both of my trucks were about 1/17 or 1/18, but you've used bigger wheels, so I think yours is not in 1/20. Probably between 1/13 and 1/15?

Hey everyone, yeesh I have been really inactive here on the pages.
So just a status update - and a couple of questions.
I am still planning on building the second transporter. I just need to find a way to get my money to the sellers on bricklink.

Does anyone know what type of transmission the fiat had in it and also what type of engine?

Thanks,
John

Hi John, good stuff

I think it's the same as mine, 4 speed with a two speed transaxle, making 8. The engine is a straight-6 diesel

Hope it helps
