My shopping just cost £165! And there was no lego in there! Just unimportant stuff like food and toilet rolls and laundry things....

And another thing, my daughter woke me up at 6am today, and it's saturday!

And my weekend is only two days long!

And another thing.....

I knew I wasn't making it to round two. Just because I couldn't go with my original plan. I was going to make the Renaissance Festival (Opens in Fall) 's jousting arena, but I couldn't find enough tan platforms, so I went with crap.

Guys, just because you lost it isn't the end of the world. You just gotta move on to better things, like the 2011 MIT's or finishing that model that you started but gave up. What I'm trying to say is even if you lost at least be a good sport about it, look on the bright side, you have a whole year to improve and prepare for next years M O's

Nah, it's "public knowledge" so no harm done.

As far as the "someone dropped their moc out" that's not entirely true. It was Dan Churches moc that got removed (accidentially, by him) from the group. He's a good kid, I know him personally, he didn't do anything to mess up anything like that on purpose. He's going to re add his moc to the group soon.

As for Austin... I left him a comment myself. he deleted it. His score was a 0.

I wanted to point out that one of the reasons for joining this event has been the chance to improve one's skills, thanks to the possibility of confronting an entry with others, and to the honest feedback from the judges.
The current scoring system, as efficients as it was in amusing the judges, doesn't help at all a contestant in improving his/her skills (if any).
I can bring myself as an example: I didn't score that high (still more than I thought, thank you all guys) but I got almost only positive comments.
From the judges' comments I expected to get pointers, and maybe some constructive criticism.
In short, it ws mostly useless to me and I'm none the wiser about the style I used.
I really hope that in the next rounds judging will return (when possible, judges have lives too) to its former glory, so I (and we) can know what and why was good or bad.

I think I agree with Yuri.

Some other complaints:

– School is time consuming!
– Running is tiring!
– Dragging oneself out of bed at 5 am to go running is even more tiring!
– I have too much homework!
– I don't have enough Lego time!

What a fiasco!

I lost the first round with 36 points (I think) behind, even though I put a lot of effort into my entry this year. Last year, I didn't put much effort into my entry, but I was only one point away from getting to round 2. I don't think my improved building skills helped much this year, those good entries made so I didn't move on!

Most people would have taken the time to look at all the building genres, most would see the relevance of the seasons, and the elements. There were many people who strayed from the subject intended. In context Fall is a season - not an action. The elements, are generally only referred to together when it has to do with magic or other mystical beliefs. Most of us like being smart and playing with words, I really think this has gone against some people. The idea is to play into the judges hands - don't make the judge play to your hands.

If I were judging it would be an average:
1-10 Building technique
1-10 Sticking to subject
1-10 Background story (note this is a short story, not a novel)
1-10 Photography
1-10 Overall build composition

If you put these tips against your work and mark yourself you may start to understand the judges a bit better. I'm no expert - just saying what I would do and why I would do it.

Out of interest my own build I would mark down for poor photos and the Earth Elemental's building technique wasn't the greatest - thanks to my lack of experience in the Mech arena.
Hope this helps at-least some :)

Listen mate, you should understand a couple things. #1 I don't really care how small her creation was. You should NEVER fault someone on how small their MOC is. Never. #2 A good portion of the brilliance of her creation is through the presentation and photography, something we all need to work on. The lighting in her pictures cast a very thematic effect and a convincing cold breeze. #3 Why are you criticizing her creation whenever it is beating yours? Sorry, but I gotta stick up for my gal Leda.

no, it was the fact that in winter people can often be a bit more cold hearted, this can bring out sudden changes of personality in people. I always used to think adults were crazy with their thinking but once you are in work-life you will understand properly what El Barto means by the emotion portrayed in Leda's build. Its a pattern you will observe in people from year to year. Just like summer and spring are associated with parties and over-exposure to fun.

Yup, I have a life outside of Lego, so weekends are my main time to catch up on the builds. I'm going to try to leave a comment on every first round MOC with constructive feedback tomorrow. Sorry I didn't get to it earlier, but I thought it would be better to see your results first. If you don't like feedback, feel free to delete the comment.

My point being that it would have been a lot easier to judge the entries as they were posted, instead of waiting the end of the round.
I bet at some point some of you even pointed that out, but one said "let's keep them wondering" or something along that line.
Oh, and I never deleted a comment from any entry ever, I don't think I'll be starting from yours :)

Actually it was a conscious decision from the start to wait until all the entries were in to begin judging (one that I personally advocated for). My judging was based on the field as a whole rather than a preconceived set of criteria. I looked at all the entries as a group and compared them to each other in order to decide what score to award. I was not stingy with 10s or 0s, and allowed for a wide range of scores. Unfortunately, the time commitment required for me to post individual scores was not in my schedule, however, I will attempt to give personal feedback.

Leda Kat's entry simple ? It's one of those builds that's more complex than it looks and, as Thoy said, it has an emotional quality to it that made it my personal favourite. I'd advise Mr Nick Nitro Brick to have another good look at it.

No whining necessary. We joined a contest, only one can win. That means 156 people have to lose. If anyone is upset over being voted out, I suggest they drink a 40oz bottle of Malt liquor and go out kicking cats and dogs until they feel better.....or until they pass out -- whichever comes first.

I didn't join this contest to win! The reason I joined is to do better than last year. But I did worse, even though my entry was better than last year!

*Sigh* Now I can't get over that I lost, this is the biggest fiasco in the history of E.K.Ocreations™! I guess I should do what you said, go out and kicking cats and dogs. (but not the ones I know!)

Maybe he had a point, I wouldn't know.

But I know about a recent case, when a new member of MOCpages left because of mr. Bones.

The guy had a little personal opinion, but mr. Bones replied rudely to his comment, on Leda Kat's creation. And as far as I know, she wasn't outraged by constructive criticism.

I know I'd leave to Flickr or Brickshelf because of such a "warm" welcome.

The day you start to take this too seriously is the day you should try something different. The judges had a tricky job with this and i think we should be thanking them rather than giving them a hard time.

I think that all those that wonder why they didn't make R2 need to critique their own MOCs before asking the judges for answers. I've had a think about my own MOC and I don't feel I was original enough. Using the SW theme was wrong decision IMO and I didn't make water central enough to the build.

By my own admission, I was gambling on the humor to get me through. Having said that, it was an idea I had wanted to build for a while so no regrets there. Perhaps some of the others ideas I had would have faired better, perhaps not. There was a LOT of great builds, some I think I edged, but I'm not a judge and I have no complaints overall as I never expected to win. Above all, it was fun while it lasted!

Good luck to all that remain and I look forward to 64 amazing builds in R2.

It's annoying when people tell me to simplify and when I do, it's wrong... I guess saying that I felt bad for other people that put more effort and skill in a build and get less noticed meant overrated. Overrating is a problem on MOCpages...

Anyways, I thought there wasn't just 4 and 5 smileys for ratings.

And I think saying I expect more means in constructive criticism language: adding an additional scene would help to expand the MOC from simple to simply amazing.

You are entitled to your opinion, and your earlier thinly veiled dig at Bones by saying that opinions aren't welcome on the pages is a nonsense. I appreciate opinions and if yours was that my vig did not merit any smileys (the rating you gave), that it lacked effort or skill as you state above, then that is your choice and I have to respect it. You are in a minority, but you are still entitled to air your opinion.

What I do not respect is the clear lack of justification you give for some of the overly critical comments you leave. You border on rude all the time without a positive, yet think you are offering constructive criticism. You are not. You are just being a critic.

I totally agree that it is all too easy to simply say '5 smileys, this is awesome!' or some other platitude rather than rate according to what you really think of something. Were you even a little more positive or constructive in how you delivered your thoughts then I could really respect you for that. As it is, I'm afraid I don't.

Thank you, but I gave your creation 3 smileys, and I think it's perfectly worth mid twenties. Not high sixties.

Secondly, I don't always constructively criticize, because I hope those comments help the potential builders to realize that just because someone is a great builder, not all of the person's MOCs are great, why not oposittely?

In my opinion, comments are meant for sharing thoughts, so I do that. When I find a creation overrated, I tell it's overrated.

I apreciate being told something I build is overrated, and I have at least three in my most popular three. I can't understand how a person wouldn't like that. I could ramble on about ethics and opinions, but that would only anger everyone, and judges would rate me lower "just because it's Dues (intentionaly)".

You continue to hide behind this belief that vague, back-handed remarks are constructive. When you say 'it's a bit simple' it sounds like you're saying 'I can and do so much better' or 'this is overrated' sounds like 'these people should be looking at my stuff, not yours, for it is inferior and undeserving'.
Then again, I'm not the first to say this and you still don't get it.

You continue to profess your right to an opinion, which is true, yet refuse to acknowledge the right of others to have their counter-opinion. I wish the creations I put a lot of effort into would get on my most popular. My two most popular Mocs doesen't deserve to be there, but that may be my fault. My second most popular is mostly just there because I back at that went around and advertised it on almost every Moc I commented on. I even made topic in groups just to get comments! Now when I look back at the Moc, I feel like it's a shame that I actually made stuff like that!

I'm not really sure why my most popular Moc is there though. I asked people to comment on it, but not as much as on my second most popular. The creation is not the worst I have, but it was my best creation back at that time. However, when it ended up on the explore page, I think it caught some more peoples attention (it even got blogged by a Swedish AFOL!) and then it ended up on Across Mocpages and on my most popular.

I really wish some of my newer and better Mocs would get there, because some people think it's my best just because it's my most popular.

Here lies the difference, and i'll leave it at this.

My opinion is my own, I don't spend hours forcing it on other people.

As I said before, smileys (140+ or not) do not make my wishes come true and are certainly not a measure of building skill. There are plenty of highly rated clone-on-a-plates out there. You forgot that this is internet and identity is importaint ot hide. I went to such a length to have a set of fake self-contradictions, but that is not importaint.

And yes, I am very sure who is being judges affects the score. Mostly it's just in the lines of symbolism, but sometimes it's more. Or I just wrote one word wrong. Fire.

You're probably right Deus, the judges CAN be influenced by who people are. I don't think that is the case in the 2011 MOCos, but let's assume for a moment you're right. That the judges don't like you, they're going to favor their friends etc. Well, too bad. No one forced you to join, and if you are correct that the judges are going to hold your comments against you, well, you did it to yourself.

Okay, Dude, where does the thing fall apart? Maybe the pics are too big? Can you get them into code on that Add A Lego Creation page? If so, add your text, then cut and paste the entire thing back onto a word processing page so you don't loose all your editing. Then, depending on server traffic, just cut and paste it back onto MocPages and try to load it. No one's going to be DQd due to a server issue. Let me know if you have any luck!

MP time is East Coast USA. It's just after 9 in the morning, so you've got almost 15 hours. What I meant was, if you can get the pictures on the page into code, add your text, then copy it all onto a word processing file that you can save on your computer. That way you won't have to keep typing and editing everything over and over if it crashes. Just copy it back to MocPages, then see if it will load all the way. Get it? Or is that not the issue?

An Epiphany in Seattle:

Was just thinking out loud while in Seattle, when I stumbled across an interesting thought. As a general rule the people of the Lego community are intelligent, creative, and more importantly often very accepting and open. More often than not, these people will readily accept one into the group without missing a beat, and shuffle over to make another seat at the table.

Now this certainly is not a given, but I think it is the norm, rather than the exception.

This is why it can be so difficult, for those of us that feel this way, to deal with those that are not inclined to behave this way. Now I know that not everybody out there enjoys their life, and are looking for a world where they can act like ‘gods’ to the masses. Although, I can imagine how painful it must be to have to go back to a pitiful existence in the real world that they despise. I actually am starting to feel sorry for these poor gits the more I type.

How does the socially inept geek (I am a geek as well) deal with the realization that they are not actually rock stars when they run into people that look at them and say – ‘glad to meet you, but no – I do not know who you are.’
Super Builder: ‘No, really. I built A, B, C aaannnd D’ Followed by a nod and smile that would be directed at a child one was trying to teach something to.
Joe Blow
Blank stare in return: ‘Sorry dude – can’t help you.’
Super Builder: ‘Come on; I have 500 kiddies on Flikr that adore me, and this really hot Canadian girlfriend! She is in Canada though, so you can’t meet her.’
Joe Blow
Shrugs, and walks away laughing with his buddies.

I don’t see the Sterlings behaving like this, nor do I see people like Phipson, Kelso, Kaleta, Leda, etc behaving like this. All people that are certainly known to some extent in the community. However, they are all also socially enlightened individuals, not socially challenged. I do get it, when one has nothing else to talk about other than their builds, and are completely lacking personality, then what is left? Suggestion, time to just stop talking and sit and listen instead. One will find it a lot easier to make friends this way, rather than trying to convince people that one is smart, clever, and should be worshipped.

We all know who they are, which is the point of this seemingly pointless blather – they stand out in their awkwardness. Why? Because they are not the norm. The vast majority of the people in this community are kind and welcoming. It is only the few that ‘just don’t get it’, and who can sour a community like ours. I realize that there are personality disorders (usually cluster B disorders) involved, and that these individuals will never understand because they are incapable of doing so. So thank you to the rest. Those that do get it – you are why I keep on trying to contribute to the community, and see it mature and grow.

Regards,

Lee

An Epiphany in Seattle:

I was thinking the exact same thing the other day. In how many other communities could you organize an event so large as the MO's, and have what, two complainers?
THIS is truly why I love MOCpages and the Lego community so much.
It's a palce where naysayers are at a minimum, unlike so much of society.
Thanks for making me get all thinky Lee.

Couldn't have put it better myself. We are all here to have fun, learn more and share our talents with our friends.

Contest such as this and the MOCAthalon which are such huge community events are such a great way to find more friends and learn so many techniques. I've lost track of the amount of people I have favourited during these games. People I may never have heard of if it wasn't for the fact that everybody on the pages has the right to play and have done so with real passion. Lots of people I strongly believe have put forward their best creations here and its only the end of round 2! I am very excited to see the ideas still yet to come.

Cheers all!

I've always wondered: does DK stand for Dave Kaleta or Dark knight. BTW I was flipping through some back issues of LEGO club magazine and saw your bat-cave in a contest. can't believe you didn't get first prize.

Well said, Doc, Ru and Leda! This is a place to have fun with our hobby, and where we can all learn no matter what age, skill, or collection. Nothing exemplifies this better than the MocOlympics with all of its twists and turns. Round Three is on its way, gang, so let's cut out all the drama and conspiracy theories, and get to it! Chaaaaarrrrrge!!!!

I have a degree in literature and have studied French surrealism and just got my rear-end handed to me by a teenager in the category of surrealism. Waaaaahhh!

But seriously, had a blast trying out this MOCOlympic thing and congrats to my opponent Tyler on a well deserved win.

Now excuse me while I enjoy my humble pie.

Hi over there. How stupid can one be! My personal timeline was for saturday 11:59. I started taking pictures totally done at 2:30 in the morning our time and posted at 5 in the morning, happy to be able to post at least anything. I know, being too stupid to read is not a strong argument for another suddenly disappearing posted MOC. But if it would happen that way, it would be for the benefit of all of us. Please, make it go away and dont be too explicit in your reply. I´m already so ashamed :I
