Okay, so this is a group for mecha contests, right? Well, you can also just discuss random things here. This will be our first General Conversation thread.
Announcement:
We have a winner! The illustrious Thomas Z. and his BD-04 Viper have received the highest feedback and have won the contest Make sure to congratulate him by commenting on his entry or by commenting on the threads.
Congratulations are also in order for Bio, Maverick, and Andros Tempest, who receive honorable mention.

YES. Make meh a mod nao. :P You might want to consider adding Jak, Bryce, ED, and chunk if they end up joining this group as well, since they are admins/mods in the EM group.

Okay, a moderator is just like a downgraded admin. You can delete comments, invite people to the group, and delete creations from the group. Hope this job description helped.
BTW, Bio and Arik, you are both mods now.

Power is what you make of it. Misuse your power, and you yourself shall be misused.

Now that I got that out of the way... We ought to make a project sometime where we not only have to create a (mini) mech, but we also have to generate stats for them. Then see how they stack up against one another. Sort of like Super Robot Wars or something.

Maybe make a contest of it.

Rabid I really like that idea. Its something ive been wondering for a while, whether or not my Mechs can take on any others, rather than me just rambling on about how powerful they are. Inspiring...

I am aware of that, but then again, any theme, game system, or even corporations all started with two people willing to work together on it.
Besides, things like that evolve as more people join it.

But that's my opinion. I could do it by myself, but it wouldn't be any fun to do so. So, I defer to your judgement.

guys, I just noticed in the Admins discussion that you're thinking of opening the group up to anyone and everyone by removing the approval requirement to join. Since the group is already public I do not think needing approval to join would put anyone off, in fact quite the reverse. I would NEVER agree to be in a group that was not selective in its membership.

The last thing we need is the likes of "The Active One" or "Oliver King" joining as to be honest, they aren't respectful of MOCPages rules, let alone this group.

I've nothing personal against either of them, but the time you would waste asking them not to spam up the conversations, reminding them which conversations not to post in, what constitutes a mech etc, etc, would just make the place a nightmare.

Seriously, I'd prefer it if you kept the approval system, just so you can make an informed decision on membership, rather than have to keep cleaning up after kfols and trolls.

I know it's early to start thinking about the next comp, but has anyone any ideas what they would like it to be about?

I think so we can judge objectively perhaps all the entrants need to be on a single specific theme or spec.

How about aquatic mecha? or Space mecha?

Another idea that might be a real challenge is to create a micro mecha using say less than 20 pieces.

very true, however I've seen how they behave in the MOCHelp group when the moderators/Admins aren't on-line. By the time Sean and co check the messages on Monday you've had over a dozen messages from this TYPE of member that just need locking or deleting. Just look at the nonsense that happened on 1st of Jan. If non of the mods for this group were here when that happened can you imagine what the place would look like when you got back?

I'm just thinking prevention is better than cure when it comes to trolls. If we can simply say no to applications from people we know are going to be trouble, it's far less hassle than kicking them out later.

Plus, every time that oliver kid gets kicked out of a group, he spams up other groups demanding to be let back in - such a major headache.

aquatic Mechs sounds like a fun contest. it's broad enough that anyone could build any kind of basic Mech design and it'd still fit in as long as it was designed for water, so we'd please everybody.

hmm, an aquatic Omnimech design might look cool...

Just thought I'd give a little word preview about my entry. Currently entitled APMS-1 (infinite cookies to the person that figures out what that stands for... :P), it will be a mid-scale mini-mech somewhere between the size of the TAM-X and the UXM-1.T. That's all I'm at liberty to say at the moment. :P

Armored Personnel Mech... Something? :P (it's all the Empire's fault I'm so bad at acronyms...)

by the way, I think mini-Mech builders' definitions relating to Mech sizes are a tad bit different from those used by other Mech designers. my idea of "mid-size" is usually at least twice the height of a mini-Mech, with 1,500+ bricks or so. :P

By that definition, my AEGAKS classify as minis. A standard M-Frame(my design) tops out at 400 parts.

I want those cookies BAD.

BTW, I'm on the third MK of my mecha. It was originally going to be called the High Performance Experimental Assassin, but now it's a heavy desert mech. prepare for your mind to be blown (I'll have it posted hopefully in a week or so).

well, that's sort of a relative measure, seeing as there's a large variety in piece sizes. and now that I think of it, I went kinda far to say 1,500 pieces, that's bordering on a heavy Mech.

as for the AEGAKS units, well, you do realize they really aren't that big compared to most Mechs, right? and, being made from real LEGO bricks, it probably relies more on larger, more common bricks instead of masses of side-knob bricks and thin plates. for example, I have a massive superheavy Mech, and the biggest piece on it is a 6x6 stud plate.

no worries, my mind has been blown quite a few times, I'm getting used to it. :P

and I hate to tell ya, but "high-performance assassin" Mechs aren't exactly easy to build. real spec-ops units just don't exist in the world of Mechs.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that the M-Frames are smallish for mecha, but they aren't made with many big parts. I use tons of brackets, and plates. The Fawkes took 700+ because of the extra set of legs and the heavy weaponry.

And I was simply refering to your comment about parts quantity.

My builds nowdays are made from 1000+ pieces, my "Viper" has about 490+ pieces with all the equipments included! Tough my biggest creation is still my Sazabi with over 2300+ pieces! I plan to top that with the Kshatriya(still a W.I.P.)and go for at least 3000 pieces, tough when this will be done is still a question.

My Conka, including the beam rifle, only uses 182 parts. It's less than half the size of your Viper. My standard Echo mobile suits uses around 780 parts. I don't know if I could build something that big.

Well, I'm not saying you can't, but to be completely honest, the very fact that you are considering it alright to enter yourself makes me wonder if you are the right person to be running these contests. I mean, what's to keep you from banning someone from this group if they give you a bad rating? Not that I'm thinking that you are, but it's just the principle of the matter. Generally, people make contest groups to oversee them, but not to join them. It just doesn't seem right to me.

I've tried checking the preference to see if the issue is the graphics/display settings but everything seems ok. I've also tried un-installing then reinstalling the programme, but nothing.

I'm currently using win7, but was previously using winxp on my old laptop.

it's late here so I may try again tomorrow.

If I can't figure out how to fix this, I'm pretty much done mocing for awhile.

I've tried checking the preference to see if the issue is the graphics/display settings but everything seems ok. I've also tried un-installing then reinstalling the programme, but nothing.

I'm currently using win7, but was previously using winxp on my old laptop.

it's late here so I may try again tomorrow.

If I can't figure out how to fix this, I'm pretty much done mocing for awhile.

uh oh. ummm... so, let me get this straight.

when you click on the desktop icon (or whatever you typically do to open it), pretty much nothing happens. is that about right?

I get this sometimes, normally I can get it to work by opening it from the start menu instead of my desktop shortcut. But if you can't get to run from a re-install then I'm not sure.

It might be the problem I had a while ago, but that was with LDD4.0 so I'm not sure it's still relevant if older 4.Xs worked. The fix was on the DbM FAQ but I can't find it now.

if anyone else does seem to be having any problems (and it isn't just me) this link describes some possible fixes.
http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=48663

sounds like one of 3 scenarios is affecting quite a few users.

1. graphics card / drivers are out of date or incompatible with LDD4.2, they need updating to run properly.

2. LDD has a bug for the type of graphics card hosted on the computer and will not run till Lego issue a patch

3. the LDD programme itself has become corrupted, in which case a reinstall is the only option.

Update:

tried another reinstall this morning and it appears to be working again. I've shut down and restarted 2 or 3 times in a row and no issues. I don't know what the problem was - but for now it appears to be fixed.

To paraphrase the comment I was originally going to post: Yay! =D

Great job Chris! you've won!

Thanks! To be honest, I didn't think there was much of a chance of me winning at first. I had misread the entry deadline and rushed my entry only to find that there was still a whole month left to enter! :P
