I'm thinking, it's a lot of the new sets in general.
The whole idea of Lego is to build something out of a bunch of simple bricks. Over time, they have released more and more types of bricks. Some, like slopes, round bricks, and modified bricks/plates can be really useful for building; but lately they're making new bricks which are big, and already so specifically shaped that you wonder what the whole point is in making a set that has a dozen parts in it, when you could have built up a similar shape from many smaller parts - the indiana jones Fling Wing set being a good example, and some of the small 4/5-wide cars which, instead of being built with various bricks, look like an already-shaped bottom and top half which just click together.
I'd give up on lego if it weren't for the fact that they do still make some good sets that use lots of parts to make a big, accurate shape, like the UCS models. The Imperial Shuttle I got last year is quite impressive.

I agree with you are saying about the big specialized bricks. That was a time when I bought nearly no LEGO. But I read an article where some LEGO-employees ( I think it was some of the designers ) talked about the development of these parts and that they wanted to "go back to the brick".
To me it looks like they managed to do this pretty good.
There are still some sets which contain huge parts but they also came up with a lot of small new elements, like the 1x3 flat tile.
Especially the new Star Wars sets (traditional and clone wars alike) contain some great new colours and shapes.
In my opinion the existing pieces should be available in every available colour, because it's quite disappointing when I find a that a 2x3 angled plate matches perfectly with my idea for a certain model, but it is not available in dark grey.

I gathering parts all of my grey and dk tan parts in a box to use for my Flying Dutchman, at this moment, the Dutchman being almost completed I see what's left in the box...
All big and special parts I could not find a use for.

I can only conclude that 'going back to the brick' is a good Idea.

However, there are those few cases where you discover the perfect use for such big special part (but it really is a discovery :P )

I,m with you man, IT SUCKS. I n response to the other guys comments about going back to the brick, I've noticed that the newer sets I buy, have more basic pieces.

P.S. : Someone should start a "Finding uses for Special Pieces" group

I'm willing to give it a go. My comfort zone is currently with small propeller aircraft and armoured cars, and this will be an excellent chance to "expand my horizon"

ninjago is successful, its just not very appealing for alot of the older groups. def. not ma fav yes, but also not the worst. also its a good concept, its just that Lego (in my opinion) isnt handling or presenting it well* and is going WAAAAY downhill with scene setups i.e. venomari shrine. mostly the props that are meant to make a scene to play with. again, this is my opinion and i am more of a model guy single piece setup (like castles)

ps: *(they should make knights kingdom style large scale ninjas for nijago!!)

I haven't had any of the recent city sets. However, I think the modular buildings are the best.

Oh, yeah, the modular buildings are EXTREMELY COOL!!!! The problem is, I'm short on money. In other words, my Mom wont fork over 200 bucks. :)

=P no wonder... ahum, I recently got the Fire Brigade building. Cant' find any fault with it except the garage is rather plain. However I doubt the idea there much in the way of wall paper in most garages in fire stations

What are your thougths on the new star wars battle packs? I think they suck, 2 charachters from each side? Really? how does that count as a battle pack? And now Clone troopers are becoming rarer in sets I've noticed. Why cant we have sets like back in 2008 such as the Ep.3 sets?
