Yes, I was wondering, did you invite me to be a judge or to actually compete in the contest ?
(I read in the general convo tread that judges are invited first)

sooo... are there any general rules we need to follow? such as only IRL creations, or themes to a round, or anything like that?

Also, I'm not sure what category I'm in. Not an advanced builder, for sure. I've been on MOCpages for 6 months, but I was on the LEGO.com DBM site for about a year before that. My builds aren't that popular, but I don't really consider myself a "beginner." awaiting your call on this.

Only new builds allowed. You will find out the "Theme" every round.
I'll have a look at your creations and I will ask the other Judges in the Administrator group which level you are.

okay, thanks!

What category do you think I belong in? I'm on MOCpages since July 2011, but I don't think that I belong in the beginner category. Im pretty bad at building in minifigure scale, but I think I can try if needed.

I have a suggestion/ question.
Question first: there will be substantial time in between theme dates?

suggestion: the time between themes should get increasingly longer from group to group. (i.e. beginner group's due dates are closer b/c they don't go through as much planning and only use the pieces from their collection. Average should have, well, average time. Advanced group should have the most time b/c they go through planning, and have to wait for pieces from Bricklink and take more time in general.)

I have said to everyone that they should really choose for themselves. If you find that the Beginner would be too easy; don't go there. If you find Average too easy go to Beginner. If you find it to easy go to Advanced.

Huh, I thought Average would be better than Beginner.

I have a question:

What if one of the categories is something like "Hero Factory" or "Bionicle", and we don't have any of those pieces to do it? I personaly don't care to buy those because they just don't look very LEGO-ish, and I would rather buy something else. But it would be really unfair if that happened and we lost just because we didn't have the pieces to do it. I don't think the amount of pieces a builder has to build with tells how good of a builde they really are.

While I'd have to ask the other judges about this, I'd say this will be a mostly System contest. If you have those parts you are welcome ot use them in any way you see fit. Ask Patrick on that.

Do you have defined categories like that of the MOColympics? Or is it like by theme, for example city, space lands scape...? Any ways other than that It seems like a good competition, cant wait for it to start! But I do hope you throw in some City stuff, because all my upcoming MOC's are Fire Department related!

OK, I have one problem:

There are alot of people that have signed up in the "Advanced" category that I certainly wouldn't be classing there (No names mentioned). I think this is because of the "How long you've been here" policy. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of rainbow warrior out there that have been here for ages! Being here for longer doesn't necessarily make you a better builder, sure, you have experience, but building skill?

Just wanting to let the judges know.....I'm sure there's a few of you out there that agree with me.

I don't know if I'm speaking for everyone, but that rule also doesn't make any sense to me. I just joined MoCpages a couple of months ago, but I've been building for years. It's a good rule in theory, but there are a lot of loopholes.

Only real Lego is a Contest Rule. Maybe it would be good if you went out of your comfort zone and used real bricks.
Well THAT killed it for me. I'll be removing myself from this competition soon, as I don't have nearly enough good building pieces to make valid entries.

I would appreciate it if you and the other judges would seriously reconsider this rule. I'd also like a reason for why this rule exists. I oftentimes feel a little segregated from contests simply because I build in LDD exclusively. Why are people so quick to rule out LDD creations for contests?

I'll give you this: there is currently no good reason I can think of.
| May 15, 2012, 1:13 pm
Quoting ~~Patrick~~ .

On LDD there are a limitless amount of bricks, and I think it is better working with the amount of bricks you have. That is the way most people have found unusual building techniques and NPU.
Perhaps instead of ruling out LDD completely, you could make it so that people using LDD are forced to participate in the Advanced category. This might balance things out, because LDD's limitless bricks would be matched by the pros' building skills. If you don't want to do this, I understand, but you will be losing another participant.

Re: the last 3 questions -

According to ~~Patrick~~ further up this thread, the contest starts on June 7. Each round will last 1-2 weeks (plus a day or two's judging time, I guess). Times 7 rounds = about 14 weeks for those that go the distance.... should finish just in time for the Moc Olympics, assuming there's no delays.
