Round 1 judging

Hi all.

As round 1 is nearing its end, I open this topic to allow the judges to give insight in their judging criteria.

After the votes are out, feel free to blame everybody for your low scores and point out why your creation is better than the others.
Not that it will change anything but, hey, if it makes you feel better, go right ahead.

Ok, thank you all for your effort to ruin the judges weekend.
You did a marvelous job. This is not going to be easy.

Here is my scheme for the final scores:
a) Category 0 - 2 Pts
How well was the chosen category met and how special was your interpretation.
b) Build 0 - 5 Pts
Building technique, parts usage, the creation as whole.
c) Presentation 0 - 2 Pts
Picture quality, the story behind the creation.
d) average or above 0 - 1 Pt
How good is your entry compared to your previous MOCs.

You will find something like:
'Your score (1+4+1+1) 7 Pts' in your comments.

Just an example how to end up with 0 Pts:
If your name is Mark Kelso (no offence) and you entered a blurry picture of a clone on a plate in the vehicle category.

I'm inclined to give everybody a 10, but Mr X will shoot me, so here's how I'm basically breaking down the scores:

1. Build (0 - 4) --- Is it nifty?

2. Idea (0 - 2) --- Was it funny? Was it serious? Did you make my eyebrows lit up?

3. Presentation (0 - 2) --- Did your pictures give the best light of your creation?

4. Photo (0 - 1) --- If I can make out what you photographed, you got this point.

5. Bonus (0 - 1) --- You can't really flub this point unless you did not follow the rules.

Tim, it's never easy to judge an own creation. You might think your robot deserves a higher score, but the judges thought long about everybody's entries and their decisions stand.

I, for example, can never estimate if people like my new MOCs or not. It happens quite often that I'm proud of one of my creations, but others are not into it. Sometimes it's the other way round and people love what I did though I don't.
It is almost impossible to be impartial when you judge your own creation. For everybody.

Same here...I think BOTH of us could've scored more than 5/10... Anyways, some creations that were lower than (in my mind) what they got got our score... I think they are being somewhat unfair..... But this seems a bit complainy to me... (My comment, not yours) Sorry if I'm a whiny kid...But, like Jared. Said... This isn't the only contest in the world! Good Luck!

Well said, and very true. I've whipped up little things that are more popular than some of my favourite and most intricate MOCs, as I'm sure we all have.

Hi Everyone. This has been a great contest so far. I have really enjoyed viewing all the high quality creations. Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder so don’t be too disappointed with your scores. I have two scores in so far – a 5 and a 6, Yeah I would have liked higher scores but hey it’s just Lego. I would like to thank Xeno and the judges for their time. Good luck everyone and hope to see you all in the next contest.

Hi Quad, I suppose that proves that the ‘like’ system is not a true reflection of the quality of the moc. I am very lucky to have follows and to receive ‘likes’, especially as I see so many much better mocs (than mine) with far fewer ‘likes’. I also posted very early. Never judge a moc by its likes ;)

I found it more as interesting difference between what people want and what judges want. And the need to find a balance between them...

Oh my, I've never been quoted before! Haha, thanks David. If I may ask, what do you fine gentlemen have to complain about? You both got better scores than me, haha :D. Yeah, it's just a little competition. You don't have to be disappointed, it happens in life. I for one couldn't be happier because now I know for other competitions what I can improve upon and when I look back, I appreciate the fact that I had a lot more fun building my entry, and would rather have lost like now, than won. You should never jeopardize quality building time over winning. The two just don't mix. So, you win some you lose some, as the old saying goes. I think before more people come on this thread to complain or this or that, just think for a moment before you type "How come I only got this..." or "Why is my score that!!!", that, the whole point of the brick is to HAVE FUN. Yes, it's a contest, yes there are prizes, and yes, there are disappointments. However, that's life. Besides, at the end of the day, the time should be between you and the brick, not thinking about some prize (even if it IS pretty darn cool). Not to mention there's plenty of other contests around mocpages. I hope this helps all those with judging angst, and I want to thank everyone, Mr. Xenomurphy, the judges and all the participants for a wonderful contest!

This is certainly a difficult contest to judge. As I look around at the different entries, it all looks pretty fair to me. Some score low, some high, some in the middle. What do you really expect? Other than ten, none of the numbers matter anyway. Good luck to those moving on to the next round!

Okay, Tim, I try to explain it one more time.
When you enter a contest and you can't afford to lose, then you can't afford to win.

Judging is done by human beings, not by machines, at least not in this contest. Human beings are always subjective. The same applies to the judges AND the contestants alike.

Therefore I asked 4 fine and very different people to judge this contest for me. If I were the one and only judge in this contest, you could justifiably say it is not fair. But the sum of 4 different people's opinions is already close to an objective judgement, more objective than your single opinion or even my single opinion for that matter.

In real life, you can't be everybody's darling. Take it like a man and like the other 52 contestants.

I see, that you've got a special problem with my judgement, maybe with the other both 5er too, but from your comments it's me you can't understand.
As Xeno pointed out judging is subjective.
I set all entries in comparison to others, cause in that contest, the possibility was given (since judging begans first after the pool was locked) - and compared to other entries your one was nothing superb - as Tiler said it could use some work - for me it was just a robot with two arms and two legs.
Not to mention that I have high requirements to entries and models in generel - the same high requirements as I have them to my own works...
That's all I can say ;-)

But Xeno pointed it out much better :-D

The points do not reflect the absolute quality of your creation. Judging means to try and find an order of all entries to the contest. Even the one with the lowest score could as well be a masterpiece. But we will get no ranking if everybody receives the same score. Having only 10 posibilities to order the entries in will result in some having the same points but might as well have an order between them that is not visible.
So getting a score of 5/10 means you are among the ones that went half way to the top - be proud.
