I did not grow up building with LEGO’s, although I did play/build/create with a variety of other types/brands of building bricks, blocks, logs, and erector stuff. I recall one summer when I was about 8 years old. My best guy friend and I put all our building stuff together and built a gigantic city on my parent’s dining room table. My mom let it stay up for several days before we had to tear it down! What we could have done, if we both had had LEGO’s!
Now, I must have seen one of my girl friend’s brothers playing with LEGO’s because I knew something about them. I believe I gave my mother the suggestion to buy a LEGO Space Set for my little brother one Christmas. So, my first recollection of building with LEGO’s was when I helped my little brother with his new set. But I didn’t really spend any other building time with ‘the brick’ as I was in my first year of high school and had cool girl teen stuff to do! Although, during my Sophomore year I recall playing LEGO’s with the little 4 year old boy I babysat. During my Junior year I babysat 3 young brother’s, and I recall playing LEGO’s with them too.
Unfortunately, I did not touch a LEGO product again until I had my first daughter. Although I had been a working chemist wife, I stayed home while my two girls were young. So, I had loads of time to play LEGO’s with them, especially my oldest daughter who really had the building gift. Being the organized neat freak that I am, while my daughters were younger, I even maintained binders of all their LEGO instructions/Magazines complete with plastic page protectors! As my daughters got older, they too did this on their own. When I returned to work in various science and math teaching capacities, I used LEGO’s in several student activities and teacher demonstrations.
During Christmas of 2010, I got the bug to reorganize my now college-age daughters' LEGO’s. (Yes, I got their approval first!) But I soon found I was spending more time building than organizing. I had caught the bug! I started searching on the internet and found all the LEGO related sites. I first posted pictures on BrickShelf, then several months later in May of 2011 on MOCpages. I found that the lighting in my little basement canning kitchen was great for taking indoor photos, both during the day and night. The best position for photos was the stove top so, I called myself StoveTop Creator! I later got hooked on Bionicles and realized ‘Creators’ played apart of that myth system. So I figured I’d keep the name.
Now, some of my first creations were not very popular. And, as I have developed in my building skills, I have removed some of them or gathered them together in one page as ‘table scraps’. The page I will post in this group is one of my oldest creations that is still left on MOCpages as its own page. Anyhoo, I have recently celebrated my first year MOCiversity and I plan to have many more.
Origin Story Addendum of StoveTop Creator, or as I now call myself, Topsy Creatori:
Sometime during the day of October 22, 2012, I made the decision to change my MOCpages name from StoveTop Creator to tah, dah… Topsy Creatori. After almost 1 ½ years on MOCpages, I knew it was time to photograph my builds with a better backdrop than my stove top. The idea had been brewing for awhile, as I had been experimenting with taking photos of my builds in natural outdoor settings, against vertically placed LEGO baseplates, in front of a computer screen, and against a whitish Formica background panel. I was also getting the itch to do photo editing. During the transition period to the new name I posted my name as ‘Topsy Creatori(StoveTop nomore)’. The whole name change business began with el Barto so graciously asking me if I would like to appear in an upcoming BSG episode. I didn’t think StoveTop Creator suited a female fighter pilot. So, I became LT Stovella Creatori, call sign Topsy. Later Topsy appeared in Parrington and Barto’s BSG/GAIA CrossOver Series. (Many thanks guys, I’ll never look at a bar of soap in the same way again!) In the time between my writing of the initial origin story and my writing/posting of this addendum to it, I resurrected my 1st MOCpages Buddy Icon, edited it, and posted it in this group’s pictures and removed the other photo I had posted. :) Permalink
