2WC 11: Lord of the Rings Architecture
Join to comment
 Group admin
Welcome to the Eleventh Two Week Challenge! The theme this time is "LOTR architecture." This is a combination of two current Lego themes, Lord of the Rings and Architecture. There are plenty of famous Lord of the Rings buildings, such as Helms Deep, Mina's Tirith, and Barad-Dûr. Your task here is to shrink one into microscale.
There is one catch though. It should be built like an actual architecture set, so that means no illegal techniques, it must be surrounded by a plain black border, and parts efficiency (using as few pieces as possible) is often ideal.

Rules and Restrictions:

-New Creations Only.
-Only one entry Per Person.
-Your entry must only be for this contest, no using it for another contest.
-For ease of judging, in this conversation topic, please post a link to your entry. No links needed on the entry itself, just a link to your entry.
-Your entry must be done by the end of Friday, July 5th, 2013 MOCpages Time.
-The build must be an building from Middle Earth (LOTR or the Hobbit).
-The build must be built in microscale.
-The build must be surrounded by a plain black border.
-The build may not use any illegal techniques
-No size restrictions, though it should fit the general size of a real architecture set.
-No specific title is necessary.
-You do not have to have participated in any of the previous contests to enter in this one.

Judging:

Total Points: 30

Originality: 5
What building did you choose? Is it simple or challenging? Etc.

Build: 10
Are there interesting techniques? Does the build look good? Is it detailed enough without being too "busy"? Creative parts use might help here.

Architecture set-ness: 5
Here we're looking for how much it is like a real set. Does it have no illegal techniques? Does it use as few pieces as possible to achieve the look?

Presentation: 5
Clear photos, being easy to follow, having some explanation, etc. will help here.

Personal Opinion: 5

If you have any questions, first read through the post again to make sure it isn't answered. Have fun!

Now that makes sense. I'm thinking about building Helm's Deep, as it is one of my favorite locations in Middle-Earth.

I've watched the series, but I am horrible at building both microscale and LOTR stuff. I guess I'd better start building. :)

I have actually finished my entry already. I was so eager to enter a contest. This is my first one! I've also been wondering, I know the rules say to make a link to it in the comment so that the judges can see it, but do we also add it to the group?

No LDD, but you can build any buildings from Middle Earth, so The Hobbit buildings are allowed.

One of the rules say that there cannot be any illegal connections. I looked some examples up (to ensure that I wouldn't make any) and found this powerpoint. It shows that many techniques that I thought were legal, illegal. For example, sticking a technic pin into a lego 1 x 1 cylinder is illegal, "since the diameter inside the red brick is smaller than that of the Technic peg, the black element will always be in compression. There is no opportunity in his scenario for the peg to be in ‘click.’" The powerpoint was made by Jaime Berard, titled "Stressing the Elements".

Yep, that's a handy presentation to use. You can also build the model in LDD to ensure it doesn't use any illegal techniques, as long as you also build it in real bricks.

You can post your entry as soon as you want. I generally advise keeping it around for a few days and looking at it again after a little while to try to fix anything that could be improved, but you can post your entry whenever you want as long as it's before the deadline.

On a side note, I was planning to just make a MOC based on this contest theme, sort of like a sample entry, but I got sidetracked so I'm making a set-style western town instead :)

It must be built in real bricks, but you can build it in LDD in addition to the real build if you want for instructions, piece count, or to make sure it doesn't use any illegal techniques.

Oh, man. I just realized a major part of my build relies on illegal connection!!!!! This is bad... very bad... I need to get to work right away. I'm assuming that a block resting on top of another block, not connected, is an illegal connection?

Depends on if it's connected in any other way. I'm going to be pretty picky about how much it is like an actual set, so when in doubt, change it.

Yes. Any other contest that is going on during the same time as this one is off limits because of restrictions or requirements from the other contests. I never looked too closely at the rules for this one, but this is standard procedure for most of our contests ad sometime we forget some details here or there. You can still add your creation to other groups as you see fit (We're not that mean, are we?) because you still want to share it around to everyone you can. The number of likes or comments have no impact on scores. So yeah, by all means, share this thing anywhere you want, we just don't like shared entries between contests because we don't want any confusion.

And to think, the first point in the rules says not to add creations that are not for any of the contests here. At least he only added three. The last person that added creations added 30 or something like that.

EST, oh dear. I assumed it would be central around America, or somewhere in Europe, which would put MOCpages midnight on saturday morning for me. I was not prepared for MOCpages to be only a few minutes behind EST. Oh well, I'll just have to work a bit harder

You know, there's a distinct lack of Game of Thrones MOCs around here. So I say we have a Game of Thrones themed chalenge. I surpose, given that I will be a temporary judge, it would be inappropriate for me to enter, correct?

Sorry we haven't gotten a thing up yet. We are discussing it in the Staff group. You managed to come up with a topic that has started a small debate because we don't know how successful it will be, and I managed to leave out some information for you.
