Round 1.
 Group admin
It's finally here! Welcome to round 1 of the 2012 MocOlympics!

Be sure to READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY. If you have any questions please direct them to the question thread.

ALL CREATIONS MUST BE NEW BUILDS! You may NOT use any old mocs in ANY of your entries. The ONLY exception to this rule is that sigfigs/minifigs may be used. Other than that, each entry must be built for that round from brick one. If we find a mech or car or something else that has been built before the round began then you WILL be disqualified.

Round one is a free for all, elimination round. All players entries are going to be scored on a 1-10 point scale. The higher your points, the more chance you have of advancing to round 2. Only the top 64 players will advance to the "player vs player" rounds.

Title: Please title your moc "MocOlympics (may be shortened to M.O.) round 1." You can add to the title after this if you wish but please open the title with this.

Your entry MUST include a WORKING link back to the MocOlympics group homepage (That means you must be able to click on it and have it bring you to the main group. None of this "please copy and paste the following" stuff). To learn how to make a link, click on the "learn some simple HTML" tab on the upload page when uploading your moc. Remember, a link WILL NOT WORK in the introduction area of the upload. You must put it in the main body of the post. Then you MUST add your creation to the group. The reason that there MUST be a link is because if you advance to round 2, you will need to know how to link to your opponent's page.

You will have 10 days to build and post your creation. Your creation must be added to the group no later than 11:59 PM on Tuesday, September 18th, MOCpages time (that's Eastern U.S. time). No entries will be accepted after that time. We will lock the group so that no entries may be added after the cut off.

Once you have added your MOC to the group, it is an official entry. Any change made to your post or pictures after this may result in disqualification. Our STRONGEST advice is to allow others to check out your post and give you the OK BEFORE you add it to the group. There's no rule that says you MUST add it to the group right after you post it so be sure it's right before you add it!

Once all the entries are in, the judges will then score all of the entries. NO ENTRIES WILL BE JUDGED UNTIL AFTER THE CUT OFF TIME. After the judges have scored all of the entries, then you will be given your total score by one of the judges in a comment on your moc.

Categories: You may choose from one of the following ten categories to build in. This year we have chosen song titles. You do NOT need to build the literal title of the song, use it to spark your imagination but of course you MUST be able to relate the category to your build. Be sure to include which category you have chosen at the TOP of your post.

The song titles that you may choose from are:

Dark Side of the Moon

Yellow Submarine

Thriller

I am the Walrus

Seven Nation Army

Ring of Fire

Get up, Stand up

Surfin U.S.A

Hound Dog

Ice, Ice Baby

And that's it. Good luck everyone! You have 10 days starting...

NOW!

Those "types" of categories will show up in future rounds. Round one is left intentionally open to allow for builders to be creative.

Links, once you learn how to do them, are quite simple. And when I say "don't copy and paste" I don't mean you can't copy the link and paste it into your HTML to make the link... you kinda HAVE to do that... you just have to surround said link with HTML to make it so that when you click on it, it takes the reader back to the main group page.

If you're having trouble, anyone here in the group will be happy to help you figure it out but in the mean time, there's a "how to" section in the "learn some simple HTML" link on the upload page.

<a href=http://www.mocpages.com/group.php/21512>; Write whatever you want the link to be called here. (ie. The MocOlympics or something like that) </a>

That's a link to the MocOlympics homepage. If you just copy and past it into your text it'll work. (Don't put it in the introduction, HTML doesn't work in the introduction.) To make a link to a different page, you'd just copy the URL and put it between the <a href= and the >, then name the link, then end it with </a>. Hope this helps, and as Mr. Phipson said, there's a help menu that you can click while posting.

Not true Jr. You don't have to know the songs at all, just as long as your moc relates to one of the titles you're good.

Technically yes. Just remember how much a contributing factor "originality" is in things like this.

And while we DO expect many "yellow submarines" in this category, it's what you DO with said sub that'll either pass you on to round two or toss you out like yesterday's orange peel.

Ethan is correct. The moc does NOT have to be about the actual song or what the song is about or anything of that nature. If for say, the Thriller category, you'd like to build a roller coaster because it's a "Thrill ride" then by all means, have at it.

We're only using song titles as your starting point, what you choose to build based on the words from that title is up to you.

Funny, all of you people just go ahead and finish your builds quickly.....I want to see low scores and some DQed entries! I know someone is gonna have that happen...it will probably be the first person to upload....

On a side note, I spent 5 hours yesterday on minifig design. What's that tell you?

You do know that the judges only judge after the ten days.

I have finished the main part, and have just ordered a few crucial minifig parts off of bricklink, lets hope they get here in within the 3-5 days they said it would take!!! While I'm waiting for that, I just need to perfect a few accessories and details... Any one know how to build a good looking volleyball net?

Did it say business days because if they did you shouldn't wait for them.

Ok well I do not get it. Do you we have to do something simlier to the songs like seven nation army would you be able to do something with seven armies?

You pretty much build whatever you want, just as long as it somehow ties into the category. Your build doesn't have to be limited to the actual song. Just choose one of the titles, and use your imagination! For example, say you were to choose "Thriller," then you might build some postapoc zombie MOC. What you said about Seven Nation army is the right concept (perhaps it's some fantasy battle between 7 armies). Up to you!

I hope your right. I also hope you'll find inspiration in the next few days to help you with your entry, not having an idea is a bit foreign to me though. Build a Walrus sculpture posing like Elvis, mic in one flipper, other flipper out towards the back of the build, give him some black framed glasses sitting half on his nose. Do it right and it'll be a winner for sure :)

Haha! Thoy, you may have just given me a great idea. Thanks:)

There's a parody of the beatles named "the rutles" (very funny by the way) where there is a "Yellow Submarine Sandwich". You can fdind it on google. Maybe another source of inspiration for you ?

Had to tear a part something and rebuild the whole thing so it would actually look nice and fit. It was built before the thing it went on, so it was VERY disproportionate. Getting another building done, then a couch, gonna review it, change what needs it, then call it good. And wave for approval of course. :)

The time for the end of the round is 11:59 pm, Eastern Standard time USA. Simply pull up a time zone map to figure out what time zone you're in and what the time difference is to Eastern US time.

Not being exact here (to the minute) but as of right now you have about... 40 hours (give or take a few minutes either side) till the deadline.

By any chance did you get the "thrill ride" from my post????? just wondering.

Gosh, I'm looking forward to that. Both of our ventures into LOTR MOCs could pit us against each other in round two. Of course, if we make it. :)

Actually, there were only 135 entries for round one last year and we still have about... 12 hours to go. I'm thinking by the end we'll be in the same ballpark as last year, give or take a few.

But... I've been wrong before so we'll see.

Give us a few days to tally up all the scores and then one of the judges will leave you a comment with your total, combined score from all of the judges.

I'm hoping to get it all done by Saturday and be able to post round 2 on Sunday morning (my time) but with Sebeus going out of town till Saturday... may be tight.

Worst case scenario, we'll have round two posted by Sunday (late) morning and your scores will be given to you throughout the day.

We might have to post R2 BEFORE all the individual scores are handed out to give more time to the builders for that round so... you may see round 2 posted here before you know your individual score. We'll see what happens...

there's no point in starting a R2 if you don't know you're in it, is there? I mean, will you be handing out theme's without oponents? Or is it just the declaring of points that 'll be running late? I'm a bit confused here...

I'm thinking that it takes a long time to post a comment on every creation, even if it is nearly identical on every one. So we'll get told whose made it then why we did so later on!

Of course. How many comments? 110 at the moment. And that number will rise drastically in the last few hours.

One of the comments above hit it on the head. Having to post over 100 comments is going to take time no matter how you slice it so...

The "most likely" scenario is this. We'll (the judges) have all the matchups ready to go, complete with players in their spots and everything and post it in the group on Sunday morning (god willing).

After that has been posted, then we'll take the time to go through and give everyone their individual scores. This way we can let those going on through to round 2 start building as soon as possible.

This is all of course just an idea since one of our judges will be unavailable from now until Saturday at some point. All of the other scores will be tallied and all we'll have to do is add his scores in, figure out who's who in the standings, fill in the blanks and post it.

Hope that cleared it up for you.

I regret to tell you that I will not be able to enter the MOC olympics this year, because the pieces that I needed did not arrive in time, (I ordered them about two weeks ago on FAST shipping) and I do not have enough time to build and post a creation worthy to make it into round two with the few remaining hours that I have left. Also, and I know this is a long shot, but I was wondering if I could still take part in the activities meant for the people who lose. Just wondering, because I wanted to do this contest to better my skills, and I don't want to wait until next year to make that happen! Good luck to all contestants, and may the best builder win!!!

Note to self... Luke and superspy X... Naughty list.

K then, now that that's out of the way...

I was truly hoping to have the scores out by now but there's been a slight holdup in the judging. One of the judges has some family stuff that he's taking care of and we simply don't have all the scores yet.

As of right now, I'm ADDING a day to the deadline for round two. It was originally going to be Tuesday the 2nd. It will now be Wednesday the 3rd. This will stand even if I get the scores done in the next couple of hours.

I know you've all been waiting patiently and we truly appreciate that however, "real life" ALWAYS comes before Lego. As soon as I get the final scores, I'll tally everything and get it out as soon as I can. I presently don't have a time table (as I'm not in constant contact with the judge) but as soon as I get them, you'll get them.

Thank you all again for your patience.

~Chris.

I start at 5:30. Have to get up at 4:00. On the plus side, when I only work 8 hours I'm off by 2:00 (he said at the start of another 12 hour day...)

One of the judges has some family stuff that he's taking care of and we simply don't have all the scores yet.

As much as I would LOVE to know the results (it's 2:30 PM here!), I would like to wish good luck to the judge who has problems to deal with. Our Legos will still be there tomorrow!

I know you've all been waiting patiently and we truly appreciate that however, , Lego. As soon as I get the final scores, I'll tally everything and get it out as soon as I can. I presently don't have a time table (as I'm not in constant contact with the judge) but as soon as I get them, you'll get them.

Thank you all again for your patience.

Effective as of now, I'm abandoning all my plans of entering the Law Enforcement field; there's too much of this "wake-up-early-and-work-hard" stuff involved.

Jokes aside, family = first; the MocOlympics can wait.

Regardless, it still takes precedence over Lego.

And as I said above, there will be a day added to the deadline (and we may just keep it that way... starting Mondays and ending Wednesdays... it could work (he said glancing up in a "yeah" gesture nodding his head).

I much prefered it last year where each round started Thursday afternoons because I could use that Thursday night to come up with ideas and do research, then Friday and Saturday evenings for chunky buildings sessions, the Sunday day time for more, then a whole week and another weekend for finishing up and photography!
That's just me though ;)

I remember having Sundays to do with as I liked, back when I was a lad.....

Today we've already been shopping (twice?!), visited family, made lunch, cleaned the house and started a school project for my son. We've bagged some clothes my kids have outgrown to take to a charity store, had a quick game of 'Crocodile dentist' and i'm desperate to sink into a chair and watch Liverpool Vs Man Utd, maybe have a little snooze.... It's only 2pm! And now my kids want to decorate some boxes with ink stamps they've got, unless they murder each other first.

Update on scores:

Ok, so 99.9% of the scores are in. I'm waiting on 2 scores from one judge. Once I get those scores, then...

The top 60 players are easy. The next grouping of scores have 8 players who scored the same and there's only 4 spots left in the top 64 so the tie breaker scores will be sent to Mark Kelso (our tie breaker judge).

Once Mark gets those tie breaks back to me (probably tomorrow morning) I can post everything.

For the record, EVERYTHING else is done. All the rankings are done (minus the two scores we're waiting on), the round two welcome message complete with categories (minus players because we're not sure about those last two scores) is written and we're pretty much ready to go.

Are there any questions (in regards to the holdup of your scores) that I didn't answer there?

Oh you're allowed to ask all you want but I can't tell you the answer. You see... 8 of the players are waiting on those tie breakers to see if they advanced to round two. 4 of them will advance, and 4 will be going to the MIT.

Now... how fair would it be to those 8 if I gave everyone else their score (and technically they would get their "base" score as well) but they had to wait till tomorrow to find out if they made it to round two with the other 60 players (that would at that point already know as well).

ALSO... since 4 of them will be going to the MIT, it might be confusing to some people who may THINK they're going to the MIT but in fact are not because they did the math wrong.

No. Chelsea is where Russian oligarch cash reigns. Pleased as I was to see them win the Champions League last year, to the average fan you would struggle to find anything other than some resentment/ jealousy against the cash pumped into that club. See also Manchester City.
But for the two most decorated clubs in the land, with a bitter rivalry going back decades, to be facing each other on the week where the Hillsborough disaster is remembered, now that is something to savour. And it was a riot to watch as a neutral too.

I drew a complete blank on category 6, so I was left with either 2 or 5. It was a toss up, but I decided to go with 5, since that one seemed the most enjoyable. Good luck with your entry - I made a lot of progress today since the weather was quite bad outside.

It's going pretty good, the category I've landed with had me stumped for a wee while, but I had a nice idea in the end ;) Sure we get our categories earlier, but our deadline is quicker to come too, so we don't really have an unfair advantage. I can't wait to see what comes out of Thoy's matchup XD

Your little allusion to Man City gave me a little chuckle. Too true, Chelsea is the Real Madrid of English clubs, but I love them nonetheless.

At least you are backing a team who win things now and again. Coming from a Derby County supporter, let me tell you the alternative is no fun!

Hahaha, yeah the rest of the world think we are still living in the 80s when it comes to the crowds at the football. I remember my brother coming home from a Derby v Forest match in the 80s (one of the oldest rivalries in English football, if not World football), extremely proud of the blood streaming out of the open scalp wound he had. "How did you get that?" I asked. "Someone threw a chair at my head". And remember the chairs were bolted to the terrace so there was some real effort put in to assault my brother that day! Nowadays, no fences, better security and stewarding (Hillsborough, Bradford, Heysel and more pushed through better, safer stadiums), nicer facilities, better policing. Heck, families are welcomed - although your kids WILL learn some new words that you will not want them to repeat....

Just got an email from Kelso so... blame him for the following:

Due to (stuff that I'm not going to talk about but is important) he won't be able to give us our tie breakers until tomorrow morning.

What does this mean you ask? It means that the scores will not be posted until at least Tuesday morning.

HOWEVER... as an "I'm sorry you have to wait so long" here's what I'm going to do for you...

We'll be going back to the Wednesday through (second) Sunday time frame for your 10 day round. Now, since you were all expecting your scores yesterday I'm going to give you one more day (at the begining here) and post the round two matchups (technically) a day early on Tuesday.

"Wait... what?" you ask? Well... if the normal round starts on Wednesday then you wouldn't get your categories till then right? Well... you get em Tuesday at some point but still have until the second Sunday to get your entries in.

Again, I'm sorry for the delay but I think this works out for the best as it ends up giving everyone two weekends during the rounds to complete their mocs (someone mentioned it above and I agree it's a good idea).

If you have any questions... read this comment again. If your question is still not answered then I'll be happy to clear it up for you.

Oh Mr. Erickson... Like was just stated above, this is only the begining.

For those that go all the way to the final few rounds it's months of constant building and coming up with ideas on what to build based on categories that we provide... it's gets pretty hectic the further you go.

Leda said something to the effect last year about it being as much an endurance competition as a building one.

Only the strong survive so good luck to everyone! And welcome to your first MocOlympics!

I guess if one of those builds was yours you would like him to take his time, check the details, read the write-up? Not rush it and miss something important? Whereas you can send an e-mail in a minute between other things, I suspect Mark (being Mark) would like time to be thorough and do justice to each of the builds he's being asked to judge.

It took Mark all of 35 seconds to send me that email and he didn't have to, he simply could have done it in his own time and let me know when he was darn good and ready.

And like Stu said, wouldn't you rather him take his time and give each entry a fair assesment rather than just rushing through just to make some inpatient people happy?

Things like this take a little time and while it may seem like no big deal to many of you (trust me, there's a few of you who really "get it" when it comes to how much work this is), I spent HOURS yesterday organizing, ranking, getting the categories ready, figuring out where each player sits in the ranking and exactly how to place each player in which bracket according to their scores...

Long story short, it's a logistics nightmare.

The good news is that WHEN Mark sends me the final ranking on those 8 players, I'll be able to plug their names in (as all the hard work is done now) and get you guys the scores, rankings and categories within a few minutes of the email.

So...

...

...

Patience.

Short version: Whenever I get the scores up and round 2 open, you'll all have until Sunday the 7th to post. I don't care (and not yelling at you here dear) if that's 11 days or 13 days...

I just know that people were expecting one thing and then things that were beyond our control happened and now all of you have to wait so I wanted to do a little "something" to make up for it. That little "something" is giving the round 2 players a bit more time to build. Let's just hope that that extra time translates into awesome builds!

Sorry if I've gotten on your nerves at all, that's never my intention. Oh and one thing, what does MIT stand for?

It stands for 'MOCpages Invitational Tournament.' This was a great idea that Chris and the judges had last year so that people who miss the Round 1 cutoff can still enjoy the contest - basically, the 64 top-scoring entries go into Round 2 of the MOC Olympics, while those ranked 65-128 are invited to join the MIT. They'll build in one-on-one contests using the same categories as for the MO, the difference being that there're no prizes (except being able to brag that "I was the best builder to get knocked out in Round 1 of the MO") !

That's not entirely true Mr. Lucas...

There WILL be prizes in the MIT as well, just not as many or as big as the prizes for the MocO's.

And to answer Heath's question/suggestion, yeap... You'll all get the scores as soon as I get them. I'm hoping it's today but if not and it turns out to be tomorrow then you'll all still have 11 (and a bit) days for round 2. If they're posted today you'll have 12 (and a bit) days for it. So either way, you'll all be getting more than the normal "10 day" time frame for the round as an apology from me for the delay.

Hang in there folks...

And a very special thank you to everyone for your understanding comments.

And also, I'd like to extend a special thanks to Kelso. The regular judges have it easy actually. We look at a moc and say... "Yeah, that's about a 6." and just score it.

Kelso then has to come in and take those 8 mocs that received the same score and rank them in order of 1 to 8. "Why is this one better than that?" What little thing am I missing that could make that one better than this?" It's actually very stressfull since his decision could be the difference between someone ending up MocOlympics champion or playing in the MIT (still pretty cool, but not like the champion title. Right Mills, Kaleta, Sterling and Junga).

Anyway, thanks Mark for your hard work here, thanks everyone for your patience and thanks to Hans who's going to be running the MIT and he gets to handle all this kind of fun as well!

2. If they're posted today you'll have 12 (and a bit) days for it. So either way, you'll all be getting more than the normal "10 day" time frame for the round as an apology from me for the delay.

Well, I guess I'll say thanks for the delay! This delay has allowed me to mess with some other projects, lately I've been deciphering LDD screenshots I found and and working on another mech.

But anyways, thanks for all that you guys have done!

I agree I've been fiddling with a Gundam type mech thing during this delay and I am happy for building this Gundam thing:D

Wow, I had no idea that ring of fire was so popular. But what about that one entry that was both thriller and hound dog?
