Aaaargh .... Ive had to move to Copenhagen and have been without internet for a month. Ive missed the whole start of the 2013 MOCathalon. And havent even had a chance to join a group offcourse. This is much worse than if i had been able to join in and had had the lowest scores possible or even had been disqualified. Now its time for me to start looking at all your creations and to sit in a corner and cry for myself. :( ..... Anyhow good luck to you all. :)

Even if you're not on a team, there's nothing stopping you from building in a few categories for fun! There's some really great categories and would be a great source of inspiration :)

I thught my build deserved more than a 1 for crying out loud! and it didn't deserve 2's, either, I thought...

could some judge care to explain more?

Alright folks:

First of all the whining was related to actual judged entries, not the broken image situation - so please no more spam about it^^

Second, if you complain about a score, be so good and include a link to the entry^^

Portraying messiness and chaos is very hard, I certainly don't have it down. You have to reach a balance between your build looking good, (because the point of it is to be pleasing to the eye) and looking bad (because chaos and destruction do look bad).

Also, the whole idea behind the build was basically this: http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/158326

Well, to give you just a few of my personal thoughts on this:

1. I'm really tired of WW I and II - you have 2800 years of history to choose...

2. Aliens are not pretty creative on that term.

3. You could have play with more details, different techniques, that kind of stuff.

4. Even if war is messy - your creation shouldn't be too messy, cause it's simply not pleasing for the eye.

5. I'm history student - so it's not easy to hit my taste(that's more kidding than serious).

P.S. I deleted every post which was irrelevant for the topic - again please use this thread only if you have to whine about your scores!

Arrgh! This must be rigged! I've gotten only 2s on my builds other than one judge! Not that twos aren't bad, but it just seems suspicious. Also, I kind of just wanted to whine.

It's not suspicious, just the consens of 4 judges. You can improve your creations with using more details, finer techniques, etc.
Have a look at the entries - there are many great to learn and improve from^^

Hehe ... The judges are ruthless ... 2 aint bad ( havent looked up your builds though ) .... But i do remember the feeling from last year ... Then again, MOCathalon is here to make you as a competitor, progress on your building skills under stress ... Next build will make you want to add more details. Be more true to the category and improve your camera skills also ... Keep fighting !! :)

I haven't judged yours yet, but I have some thoughts. Having been on both sides of the competition, I'm learning what judges like. Judges like clean presentation. Good quality photos are key. A balance of color is another factor. A demonstration of skill with Lego used in exciting ways is paramount, but it must be used in conjunction with the other factors I've mentioned. I'll tell you this too - judging is not easy. I'll spend minutes just staring at one MOC, trying to determine its value. Make our job easy by giving us what we want. Easier said than done, right? Well, good luck!

I would like to have some clarification made on the rules behind Category 16. A question was previously asked on the components of a minifigure. Nick replied with the following:

Quoting Nick Brick If a piece like a minifig torso, legs, or hinge comes in a set preassembled it counts as one piece. But if you break it down into its components, they count as how many individual pieces you use.

I received a score of zero because it was said that I exceed the limited amount of bricks. However, the above comment led me to believe that unless the minifigure was broken down into individual parts (e.g. legs, torso), it would count as one piece. Or did I read it wrong? In my opinion, unless the answer meant what I thought it did, it was altogether confusing. Link: http://www.mocpages.com/home.php/68065 Thank you for your time.

You definitely read it wrong. A torso (body, 2 arms, 2 hands) comes preassembled, but minifigures do not. A minifigure like the one you used therefore is three parts.

Can Nick tell me why he gave my Overlooking the Beach (http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/355771) a one? It may look small, but it's really about 20x32, with a lot of SNOT. Is it something I could improve upon for next time?

I can't tell what I'm looking at beyond the table. Remember, just because something is big or uses SNOT, doesn't automatically make it good. Big is a size and SNOT is a technique.

Sure, I realize that just turning bricks sideways and making it big doesn't mean it's good. I guess the presentation is what's bugging you, I have no problem seeing what's back there but then I built it so I know.

While I am not arguing for a better score or whining, I would like to bring forth a conflict between the score. I will not complain about my score if I have broken any of the rules. After rereading Nick's reply to the above question and reviewing his explanation several times, I can see where I had misinterpreted the rules. However, Chris, though I really appreciate the fact that you took time to explain your judging, your comment further confused me:
Quoting Chris Phipson
While the minifig is indeed counted as one part for this purpose, the blue dome piece is two parts

The minifigure counts as one piece? This is in conflict to what Nick said earlier. And how is the blue dome piece two parts?

Once again, I thank the judges in advance and hope my comment does not come across as complaining, but only as an effort to understand the rules, as well as hopefully help to avoid future mix up with other contestant's entries.

-LB Senior

From what I saw, the dome had both the top and bottom portions on it. Am I incorrect there? If you did indeed only use the top portion of that piece then I'm the one who made the mistake.

As for the minifig issue, I'll bring it up in the judges group and we'll get that hashed out. My personal thought on it is if a minifig is assembled then it counts as one piece (minus any hand held or neck/shoulder accessories).

We'll discuss it in the group and get back to you. Thanks.

I'd like some clarification - with regards to a 16x16 limit on the "fail like a boss category - I created a build which fits inside a 16x16 baseplate - but I was told ,quoting chris,"A fun build but, we've already set a precedent for the size restriction in this category so I will have to dock 2 points for it. Score of 2 (woulda been a four without the docked points). ~ Chris." - where was this precedent set? I checked all official judge threads and read the categories multiple times over, and there was nothing stated regarding this or other categories with size restrictions.

For something like that, no, I'm sorry. It wasn't a tech glitch or something beyond your team's control that didn't allow the moc to be added. It was a miscommunication by your team that caused the entry not to be posted, something that MOCpages, nor the judges can be held accountable for.

Hey Ben,

Quick version... I judged it off of the color photos. As cool as the B&W shots were, technically that counts as "altered" pics so I had to base my judging off of the color ones. Based on that, I went with the "Hey, this is a good build and I like it" score.

Hope that helps clear it up!
