Good evening Guys and Gals! The time has come, the moment is here, the scores for the 2013 MOCathlon have been tallied!
I'm sure you are all wanting to know what teams get what bragging rights, who the harshest and nicest judges were, what the most popular categories were, what category was the easiest to get points in etc.
All that info is important when thinking ahead to next year :)
Firstly, a huge thankyou to each and every contestant. This year has been a blast! It has been a huge privilige to sit back and judge so many wonderful creations.
As a judge, we all had to look at each and every creation, a task many competitors would not normally do due to building constraints.
Right, now lets get this show started!
In total there were 120 contestants in 24 teams, we had 386/720 possible models uploaded and put forward to the MA group. (currently reading 383 due to some creations getting removed from group)
There were 45/386 models which achieved perfect scores. Between all 6 judges, there were 7798 points awarded!
So we had 30 categories, 26 of these were completely new, 4 were 2012 throwbacks.
The most unpopular category: Rube Goldberg Machine
The 1st equal most popular category with 18 entries each: 16 or fewer Parts suggested by Nick Brick, Bookends sugested by Wes Pitter.
The 3rd equal most popular category with 17 entries each: Alien Landscape suggested by Thoy Bradley, In the Inn suggested by Ru Corder.
The most popular throwback category with 15 entries: Tropical Paradise.
Now pay attention, some times those harder categories pay off.
The easiest category to score points in: Rube Goldberg Machine, averaging 4.25 points per judge.
The second easist category to score points in: What a girl wants, averaging 4.00 points per judge.
The hardest category to score points in: Fail like a BOSS, averaging 2.45 points per judge.
The second hardest category to score points in: Lookin' Good, averaging 2.90 points per judge.
Overall, on average there were 3.46 points handed out per judge.
With 4 completely new judges, it should be interesting to see how consistent we were.
The judges gave away between 1200 and 1400 points each.
In order from harshest to easiest:
Nick Brick - Big on guns and tough as nails.
Thoy Bradley (Myself)
Chris Phipson - He has reputation to worry about, right? :P ;)
Okay, now that the statistics are out of the way, lets get into the awards!
Competition was heated this year, with only 1 point - yes, 1 point, between 1st and 2nd place, and honestly, it pays to know your deadline because it can be a real game changer!
The Sinister Team award, awarded to the team who acts most suspiciously during the games buildup.
This award gets handed to Team Maersk Blues. Not only did they wait to the last moment to advertise their group members, but they also recruited Bruce Lowell, a very well known LCP!
Speedy Builders award, awarded to the first team to complete all 30 builds.
This award gets handed to Team Clutch Builders, as it happens they were also the only team to complete all 30 builds in the given time constraints. Well done!
Accurate Player awards, given to the players with the highest point contributions in the competition. EDITED - corrected.
3rd place: This award goes to a player who managed to make 8 builds for his team, 6 of them perfect scores, the other 2 worth 29 points each. 238 points in total! Nick also recieves recognition for being the player who built the most perfect scores in the games.
2nd place: This player created 12 of his teams builds - with two of them perfect scores, a huge round of applause for Lego Junkie who contributed a massive 279 points to his team. Well done Lego Junkie!
1st place: Also creating 12 of his Teams 30 builds - 3 of them perfect scores, this player contributed a whopping 320 points to his teams score! Give it up for Si MOCs!
Accurate Team awards, given to the teams with the highest average score on submitted builds.
3rd place: Team Clutch Builders, averaging 4.54 points per judge, give these guys a pat on the back!
2nd place: Team Maersk Blues, averaging 4.60 points per judge, great effort guys - an awesome result!
1st place: Team Jigsaw, averaging 4.70 points per judge, these guys are redefining the benchmark. A huge well done!
The most Perfect Team award, awarded to the team which has the most perfect scoring builds submitted.
This award is given to Team Jigsaw, who managed to produce 13 perfect scores, ousting Team Clutch Builders, who managed to produce 12 perfect scores.
Well done to both Team Jigsaw and Team Clutch Builders.

With only 1 point in it, this award is given to Team Clutch Builders. In total they had a combined score of 818 points, beating Team Jigsaw by 1 point.

Well done to all teams. Jigsaw, I represent a good portion of Clutch Builders when I say that you guys deserved first place. Awesome job to everyone in your guys' teams.
Also, Judges, where are the tallies for all the teams? Its kinda depressing for everybody else to just see a list of random stats (which I found super interesting) and not see how their team ranked up.
A huge congrats to Clutch Builders, who put up a very strong fight and ultimately bested us. If it weren't for your relentless flow of amazing entries I don't think we would have pushed ourselves to work nearly as hard.
As much as I appreciate the award, I need to point out a few other players on Clutch and Jigsaw who bested me in parts of the category. Jigsaw's Ryan H and Clutch's Kyle Ransom both had flawless averages with all their 3 and 4 respective entries being perfect, while Jigsaw's LEGO Junkie and Clutch's Si MOCs scored a massive 279 and 320 points each (if I counted correctly).
Thanks again to the judges for their dedication through the competition, scoring all the entries and making an exhausting but fantastic month. Extra thanks to Thoy for preparing all the stats!
Overall March really took it out of me, but 11 months will hopefully be enough time to recover! Permalink
I'm the toughest judge, woot! Gotta treat that 5 as it is: a perfect.
As a competitor in every MocAthalon before this, I didn't like the lack of engineering challenges or anything to please the gamers. Thus, Rube Goldberg and It's-a me, Mario! were created. Blake, glad you liked Rube Goldberg!
My scoring may not indicate this, but this was quite an impressive month of mocs! Really, I'm blown away with your efforts, part usages, creativity, and endurance! Permalink
Clutch Builders FTW! thanks judges for the awesome contest! and congrats to every contender! Congrats to Jigsaw as if they had entered the last one a few minutes earlier they would have dominated. Maersk blues you also put up a fearsome performance!
most of all thanks to my team for having me, tolerating with me and being completely awesome. you rock!
looking forward to next year ;) Permalink
Most sinister and second best average? I'll accept that. ;) Well, I can't rightly say I contributed to the average (at least not in a good way), but I'm more than happy to be the scheming villain... ;)
Congratulations Clutch Builders! I'm still amazed that you guys got all thirty in, and with such top-notch quality at that. Well played guys, you earned the win. Si-MOCs must have some serious lacerations from all that building... And I'd like to thank Blake for initiating a slew of Calvin and Hobbes MOCs. :P
Also, well done to Jigsaw, you guys deserve to lose by more than one point. You've become a MocAthalon legend, and this year your tale will have grown exponentially. Your trend of coming closer to victory each year continues... Next year you'll have to at least tie. ;)
Most of all, I'd like to give a huge thanks to The Maersk Blues, you all put a tremendous amount of effort into this. I'm truly inspired by your incredible work over the last month, and I'm honoured that such talented builders chose to collaborate with me. Elliott took the leap of faith and joined me before anyone else, Noah was a lifesaver when another TFOL had to drop out before the games, Bruce came up with the brilliant team name, and Bart pulled in a stunning amount of points. Thanks guys, you're awesome.
Finally, thanks to Chris and the judges for creating all the fun, hat's off. Permalink
Second harshest judge - yay (haha) - not unexspected.
Congratulations to the winners and all other teams who participated! Though there is just one official winner, I think everyone who played wins in a way - coming to enjoy all the great entries, learning techniques from other players or just getting inspiration!
This years MA was fanatastic and even if my scores don't show it everytime, I was much impressed by some people, which developed their skills from the last years to now or within the contest time. Again it was a honor to be an judge (three years in a row now)!
I can't say how proud I am of my teammates.
The effort everybody put out was above and beyond the call all month long, and we wouldn't have come nearly as close if it wasn't for each and every member of the team.
it was an impressive run gents!
Big congrats to Clutch Builders for their win!
Without you guys spewing fantastic entries into the group pool, I don't think we would have done nearly as well.
Your excellence pushed us to better ourselves, and it worked out well!
It's somewhat surprising to me that the scores were so high this year, seeing as Common Elements won with 740 points last year, while this year, the top two (almost three) teams blew past those numbers by a longshot.
Way to raise the bar fellow competitors!
Next year should be very interesting indeed. Permalink
Very impressive year, congrats to all! Also congrats to Clutch Builders, though I think I could tell they would win, either them or Team Jigsaw. So, judges thanks for this year. But, I'm not through with you yet...I'm coming back next year! You still have to deal with me. >:D (HA! Like I'm any threat to Clutch Builders...) Permalink
Congratulations team Clutch Builders! A hard fought and well deserved win! I'll post the info on claiming your prizes in your team group.
To all the players... wow. Every single one of you stepped up your game and every year the contest gets harder and harder. Both to judge and to compete in! Every one of you deserves a big thank you for making this the most fun and exciting MocAthalon yet!
To the judges. I've already told you in the judges group but let me just say that you all REALLY busted your (bleeps) this year. And a special thank you to Thoy who not only kept track of all the scores but went the step further by figuring out all the fun stats that goes along with all these numbers. You rock man!
This has been an amazing contest this year and I really can't wait for next year's! Every year this contest blows the last year's one out of the water. Seeing what I saw this year... man... next year... I can't wait!
Thank you everyone and we'll see you in August for the MocOlympics!
Wow! Beat by 1 point... thats intense! Anyways, congrats to everyone! You all made some creative and great builds. And thanks to the judges for their time and such. It was a lot of fun once again :) Permalink
Congratulations to Clutch Builders! You guys put on a terrific show. And Team jigsaw...wow! Amazing finish! Thanks to all my team members, who gauranteed we'd at least get a spot on the board :P We did it for fun, had a great time, and built to the best of our ablity. Till next year! Permalink
