thanks for the invite guys!
I was really looking for a medeval group,
the fact that you created your map
makes it a bit harder to join you,
since, meedass is on alta-5...
but, I don t want to disapoint you,
so, I will manage something,
the black wizard can travel anywhere,
and my collection grows of a 1000$
each month, I am TOTALLY dedicated!

I am able to reproduce most of your buidings,
since I can t get to you...
I will bring them to me, lol.
all I have to figure now is...
what could be the wizard s motivation to get there? or bring meedass there,
help me out on this,
and you re on!

Well, I soppose it doesn't.

Think about the fact that most of Mythron's army died protecting smaller villages. I hope this answers your question :D

I went immediately to my page to check the messages, and none would show up. Mr. Boy,

Where does it say what powers people of each rank actually have?

My point is that the ranks really have no meaning. They are just names.

Is there an actual rank requirement for starting your own faction? I doubt it, but it would be cool if there was.

Maybe a posting on the Points thread that explained the powers that come with each rank would be helpful?

Mike

Nice, nice. I'm editing the main page, so you will have permissions to do certain things when you get a certain amount of points. (thanks for the idea!)

Mr. Rutherford and LOM at large,
Promotion has is merits, but I feel that your rank and authority system is somewhat undemocratic. Freeling + + and Brick Boy are leading our group excellently and responding well to the voices of one and all in our multiple, parliamentary discussion threads. If everyone could wield the power to create their own factions, our budding group structure would be killed in its cradle. If everyone has a say in any new changes, if only to make a counter-proposal, then we are bound together. Furthermore, natural inclination will lend more weight to the most active as well as the most worthy, so I think your inkling of a meritocracy already has its foundation.
Still running,

My point is, if everyone can start their own factions, it would be a mess. I also dislike the idea of executive power going to whoever has the most points, because as important as Lego-building is, it is completely distinct from traits such as leadership or good judgment. Finally, I trust our current administrators to listen to the opinions of the group and act on them, and do not believe that dividing power among yet more people (privilege from rank) can possibly be conducive to a better-run group. Isn't building its own reward, anyway?

Quoting Michael Rutherford

Mr. Despathens,

That is a much more succinct message. I find all of your points to be valid and I think they deserve considered responses.

1. You say: if everyone can start their own factions, it would be a mess.
1. I say: The site already is a bit of a mess. All the good sites are a little messy. The mess is the result of lots of creative people trying to get their input crammed into one process (the group). Mess is the nature of the beast. As long as we can generate a strong stream of good MOCs, then the mess is justified. I bet Picassos work area was always a mess.

2. You say: I also dislike the idea of executive power going to whoever has the most points, because as important as Lego-building is, it is completely distinct from traits such as leadership or good judgment.
2. I say: While I agree that leadership and building are unrelated skills, I also think that associating the two (allowing group members to build their way to leadership positions) this system encourages young builders to build more (this is inherently good), and it will result in a cadre of leaders who are genuinely committed to the success of the group. It certainly beats the normal system for selecting leaders in a MOCpages group (buddies, cronies, or relatives). It opens the field for young eager builders who want to make a name for themselves.

3. You say: I trust our current administrators to listen to the opinions of the group and act on them
3. I say: If you trust the current administrators to listen to the opinions of the group and act on them, consider that in this case, they have done exactly that. A group member expressed an opinion, and after consideration, it was acted on.

4. You say: and do not believe that dividing power among yet more people (privilege from rank) can possibly be conducive to a better-run group.
4, I say: Trust in leadership is all well and good but dont forget to trust your fellow group members as well. They wont crash the boat into the first rock they see.

5. You say: Isn't building its own reward, anyway?
5. I say: For you and me maybe. But people are here for many different reasons. Glory, personal accomplishment, socializing, learning a million different people on MOCpages, and all of them are here for slightly different reasons. We have to be careful not to impose our own motivations onto others.

Your thoughts?
Mike

1. Picasso chopped his own ear off, and eventually killed himself.
Messes are individual; they are meant to be understood by one person, their creator.
I understand your allusion to creative hubbub, especially in a large environment with many thinkers, but we are few in number as of yet. Even you have not yet posted a MOC, as you have made clear.
2. Is leadership of a new Mythronese faction really the way to make it ”big-time”? Now that I put it that way, I can see what you mean. However, it seems that our group is still in beta. We need more active members, or attaining rank is like being the lieutenant general of a three-person army. The future shines bright, and I will add my ideas when the time comes.
3. To use your own words, here ”I have no idea what your point is”. Are you agreeing with me, or do you feel that I am damming the flow of creative discussion? If the latter is the case, I would like you to know that I intend the opposite; I wish only to supply the conversation with more options and ideas for our admins to go through, though or debate seems to be distracting me.
4. Some philosopher said once, ”A multitude of rulers is not a good thing. Let there be one ruler, one king.” I am no monarchist in everyday life, but here I make an exception. I can hardly wait until we can compete for faction leadership, but such individuals can only make decisions for their quarter of the land. Beyond that they share each member's power to be a councillor via these discussion threads.
5. You are right again; I only know my own motivations, and coned that even I want something approaching renown someday. I can see how others might want to achieve that by becoming an influential member of such an outstanding group as this (but I still think our current administrators need to have the final word).

Sincerely,
GdS.

Run away!

In Lord of the Rings there ARE some types of gunpowder, like the bomb that blew up the wall of Helm's Deep. If you've read A. P.'s medieval series, "Rise of the Mage", that kind of technology is like what I have in my builds for this group. I mean, if I'm allowed to have a flying airship, shouldn't cannons be allowed? If not, can there PLEASE be a discovery of black powder? It would be a LOT more interesting.

If they are real players, can you give them missions as if you were someone making a Rogue Challenge? If so, I could possibly create some pretty fun (in my case, anyway) events when I get that many points.

Thanks for the link. I have a few more questions.

How many points are awarded for a character intro build?

Can we launch the Nerougue faction?

Is it possible for your character to change his alliegance to another faction? (A lowly outlaw awarded a knighted for an excellent dee, perhaps?

Would it alter the story to add my own villians? (Not like: "The threatener of all lands" type thing, just a bad dude. (Like the Goblin king from The Hobbit)

Can I have an audience with the king without ruining the whole story?

What are my boundaries as to builds that have story in them without ruining everything?

What is a guild?

How many free builds am I allowed per month?

Can I have a dude in my builds that is my friend, but he isn't neccesarily someone I build builds off of?

May I make a story of my characters life through a series of builds, and write a book on it?

That's all for now, if I think of anything I'll come clicking to this thread.

If you read the Homepage, it tells how many points you get for each challenge.. I'm pretty sure you get 5 points for your character intro.

And David TFNJ will open up the Nerogue topic to see what everyone thinks.

And yes, it is possible to change factions.

And sure, you can add some villains.

And yes, I don't think it would matter if you had a meeting with the king..

What are your boundaries? .. Well, you cant assassinate the king.. And you can't destroy towns.. These opportunities may come up in rogue challenges though. ;)

A guild is a special force of people. Such as an elite group of knights, or a band of wizards. Don't forget to name your guild if you make one. You also have to show a MOC of your guild.

And yes, you are allowed to have a companion.

And Yes, you are allowed to make your series of MOCs into a story. ..

The topic labeled ”General Information- IMPORTANT!” has a list of claimed cities. You do not need points to claim a city, but you lose your seat if you miss three sovereign challenges. Also, you can invent places, but these probably won't make it onto the map unless you ask Freeling and build your place in a MOC.

You don't have to have points to claim a city. Unless you're an outlaw, then you just cant claim cities. c: Don't worry about people claiming cities for free. I'll make them do sovereign challenges. And if they don't, they will be kicked out of the city. :P

Hi there! i joined this group recently and was wondering if anyone could give a short explanation of how things here work. Thanks!

You asked for it:
This is a sort of role-playing game with five factions (the outlaws have more than half of the members, but my faction of Rainos always needs more heroes) in a Middle-Earth-like setting. There are monthly building challenges to compete in/complete that either further the national story, your character's story, or a faction's aims. You can also build free builds. Every build you add to the group gives you more points, and points give you powers like founding your own guild. It's pretty fun, and it doesn't take up too much personal time because all of the challenges are optional.

Hello...?

Great question. Here's a big answer that tries to cover everything:
Have you ever noticed how modern fantasy often ignores religion? Gods or god, singular, were the basis for European life in the middle ages, but there are never any monks in places like Mythron. People subconsciously try to avoid sensitive ground like that in their games, I think. Frankly I'm a little scared to bring that into the LOM, as cool as it could be.
Mysticism is easier to deal with, because it deals with ”pagan” spirits that hardly anybody believes in anymore and allows RPGs to have priests and priestesses that are basically soft versions of wizards with a touch of the fanatic about them, from what I can tell.

Here's the straightest answer: No one has done anything about metaphysics yet. You have a blank sheet to write on.

Alright. I plan on adding somthing, just without the "details" of metaphysics in LOM. I think Shawn Gibson actually had something in his Guardian challenge that would pertain to this.

The original idea, once it was decided to allow real people join guilds instead of NPCs only, was to allow cross-factional membership. This was vetoed, but if enough people want to do that (3 to 5), then I'll see if I can't lift the ban. So tell me if this is more than a hypothetical scenario.

So it looks like some people from other factions would want to join guilds. Okay, but I think the requirement is that the guild founder's faction must have the most people in the guild.

Example: Garrett makes a guild, and some Nerogueians want to join, the Nerogueians cannot tie or have more members than the Mythronians in that guild. If Garret has only one other Mythronian in his guild, Nerogue is limited to one member being allowed to join.

Sounds good.

As long as it's okay with the other Admins, it's all good. The main thing about no other factions in a guild is this: ties with other factions via guilds that would be in conflict with each others' factions. Say a Mythronian was in a guild with a bunch of Rainosians. Maybe a rogue challenge comes up that has Mythron raiding some Rainosian ships. The Mythronian in the Rainosian guild would feel awkward because he'd be attacking Rainosians when he's part of a Rainosian guild.

However, I do believe that guilds could be good when the factions are on good terms with one another.

I would advise the following:
1. Nerogueians and Mythronians should be fine with joining the others' guilds.
2. Rainosians and Enalicans should be fine with joining the others' guilds.
3. Outlaws could pretty much join everyone since they as individuals can ally themselves with anyone.
4. Anyone from any faction should be fine to join an Outlaw guild.
5. Follow this rule: If a Mythronian starts a guild, the majority of the members must be Mythronians. There can't be one Outlaw, one Nerogueian, and two Mythronians. There must be three Mythronians in order for two other people from any other factions to join the guild.

Why not let the guild leader decide who is allowed in, and everyone else to decide if they want in?
As for the bit about the leader's faction having the most members, do you know how that sounds to someone whose faction has about two people? At the very least, it has to be ”No faction can have more members in a guild than those of the founding faction,” which makes more sense.

I don't think that will be much of a problem. Even in the real world friendships can be maintained between citizens of warring countries, (especially between people of the same class or profession) and it's not like a Rainosian on good terms with one Mythronian will instantly sympathize with every citizen of the opposite country. I don't see my guild as being closely affiliated with Rainos, either, though I know you Nerogues are all about factional bonding.

So, anyone who wants in the Band of the Grey Shield, the largest, most-powerful guild in the LOM, is welcome!

I wouldn't suggest it, nor will I be joining a guild of another faction (a big maybe for joining a Mythronian one). It's just that the whole point of having factions is to be fully committed to it. I don't think cross-functional guilds fulfill that.
Besides, why would a Mythronian in a Rainosian guild want to compete on the side of Rainos for the annual joust? It is not logical even for back-then kingdoms. If you're going to joust, why not compete for your faction? It's like a Canadian (citizenship in Canada) competing on an American Olympic team. Say the Canadian wins a Gold Medal? The Gold Medal is for America, not for his country. How would the people respond?
Jousts in medieval times are like the Olympics today.

That's my reasoning. I'm not against people joining other guilds of another faction, it's okay if we go along with it, but those are my reasons.

Ha ha, you're arguing medieval history to a professor. I'm glad we agree on the guild issue, but here's a fact for your education:

Jousts are not like the Olympics. They gave knights a chance to show off and make a profit by taking the horses and armor of their defeated opponents. Although tourneys could be international events, the teams that knights such as the nigh-legendary Sir William Marshal led were not affiliated with any particular country. For example, English Sir Marshal's first tourney partner was Flemish, and they traveled between tournaments together and won great fortunes.

Alrighty, let's add the phrase that says you can join as many guilds that started from your faction and one other guild that isn't part of your faction. The guild leader decides who is allowed in and who is not allowed in, he can also say that his faction has to have the most members, but it's not required. Good? If so, please add it to the Guild thread and I'll spread the word and such :)

I've used the Kingdoms Lion Knights as the provincial troops of Falmore. (Not only is that a neat way to use what I have, it's also more realistic- in the feudal system, the national army is made up of soldiers who owe their allegiance to local lords rather than the king.)
Why don't you put more than one chapter on a single page? That way you could bind several MOCs into one freebuild.

Tomeu was handed over so the new faction of Nerogue could have a starting place. It is no longer a part of Mythron, but it could be retaken with a city attack if someone with 100 points starts a war.

Oh ok, are the Mythrons at peace with Nerogue? If so I'll leave the city to them. =D

Here's another part of it. Since the new faction needed to start and it needed a place on the map, Tomeu seemed like the ideal location for at least three reasons:
1. No one in Mythron claimed it.
2. It is quite far off on the map, with many possibilities for new cities.
3. The city was vulnerable about the attack and with so many Outlaws looking for action and some revenge for when Mythron allied with Rainos to "crack down on the crime." It just ended up doing more harm than good for the land.

So the Outlaws took their chance, and Nerogue decided that Tomeu would be a good place to stay since it is so far out of the way from another Mythron city. Most of the soldiers in Tomeu were what I call the "bad" Mythronians. Since Tomeu was not headed by anyone, the soldiers banded together and afflicted the people, and sent false letters to the other cities of Mythron saying how wonderful it is in Tomeu. After the Outlaws came in, the people of Tomeu were joyful that they freed them (remember in the challenge it said not to meddle with those who are not resisting the fight). Those who wish to remain in Tomeu and join Nerogue are welcomed. Those who wish to remain loyal to Mythron are free to get help (even escorted by Nerogueian soldiers) to move to one of the other Mythronian cities.

The next thing I'm adding to the Nerogue thread is by encouraging free builds involving with helping loyal Mythron families and wounded soldiers to get back to Reedus or Carthal or in some other way help out the people of Mythron (like escorting people to Mythron cities).

The builds are medieval or earlier, with gunpowder right beyond the limit. Most LOM MOCs are set outdoors in the wilderness, but other settings range from fortresses to warships to inns to temples.
Players' builds typically feature their main character, but the only definitive plot or story requirement is that they have to have been built for LOM.
Finally, there are all sorts of challenges that grant points for players to rank up and unlock still more abilities and challenges, such as starting a guild for other players to join or attacking or conquering the major cities of the map..

Paint to get the the map done.. And I'm not sure what was used to get the touching up done. Some of the Admins have added their own things to the Map. I'm not sure what THEY used though.

By "progress reports," do you mean Work in Progress pages? I suppose those would count as freebuilds if you persuasively stated how each report is not really the same MOC as the previous.

The admins (myself included) mostly post an RC, UC, or both depending on the prevailing winds. I think we were supposed to return to the two-per-month deal, but the tournament's preview next Saturday seems to have replaced the RC.

I update the points on an arbitrary basis, but I try to keep it running smoothly.

Mythron first became a coherent country around 800 years ago under a great general, probably Mythron I. Rainos was conquered 200 years ago and won the definitive battle for its liberation five years ago, setting events in motion that split the Mythron archipelago into five powerful factions. Mythron fell six years after that, and Rainos ruled supremely for all time.

Important information regarding discussing/using/making up things about other factions in your MOCs:
What if you said stuff about another faction in a past MOC or about Enalica which doesn't have an active faction leader?

What if you said stuff about another faction in a past MOC or about Enalica which doesn't have an active faction leader?

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter too much because part of Enalica's nature is that they have their own captains and ways, but if there are general claims about Enalica, bring it up in the Enalica faction thread and get it approved by 2 other faction leaders. Similarly, making up something about an Outlaw and his guys are fine too because of the nature of the Outlaws. Now for Mythron, Rainos, and Nerouge it is different because if you are from one of those factions, you pretty much go along/follow/do what they would do. EDIT: Rainos is similar to Enalica as in there are leaders who do whatever with their men, thus integrating easily into your stories. With Nerogueians you would see more order along the lines that they would follow a code of justice.

We aren't worried about past MOCs that maybe have non-official information about other factions.

Was there something specific you had in mind about Enalica? Or did what I say cover it?

You can have another character travel along and do things with your main character yes :)
You wouldn't have 2 points columns for each of the "main" people you have in your MOCs.

I hope that helps :)

I've been thinking of something like that myself. After I hit 125 points and the challenge connected, I'm planning to introduce a more independent and detailed cast that doesn't always stick around my sig-fig when they have adventures. I thought I would give a brief update of my main character's life in every MOC, but I'm interested to see what you come up with.

Would these MOC's be able to earn their own points? As in for character intro? And would I be allowed additional free builds? I wouldn't expect 2 UC or RC entries, that would be too unfair.

You could make a second "character intro" thing, but it would only count as a freebuild. Somehow the characters have to be related (not family wise, but you know) so that if you do a MOC with the one guy, it would still flow with the general story of the other guy. One main character, and other could go somewhere else, but it has to flow together.

Yes, only one entry per challenge and all of your points get combined (you don't get an extra 5 points for a second "character intro")

If it fails (hopefully not), it could be one of those non-playable character type things that you can have in your builds whenever doing whatever. We don't need to force it to fit as some sort of faction; four is plenty if the pirates fall. The current Challenge is probing out the marine elements among us. Depending on the results, I have some ideas... The admins will decide something, but ask me about it in the Rainos group.

Technically, there are no gods in LOM - no one has ever thought to introduce any. I might bring that subject up in the staff group and see what everyone thinks before giving you a good answer, but you can try a religion out in your MOCs and see how it works. As for a kingdom of elves, I doubt that it would fit well with the province system, but there seems to be a place over the sea where some elves like FNJ were born.

What I meant for the kingdom was that the king rules over elves, but they are just another kingdom in Mythron and take all of the kings rules. Like the rulers of different cities in the factions.

No, but if you have any ranks you will lose those. Also, you might want to consider Enalica. Actually the building style is very similar, and as is the armor (if my ideas get approved). I am serious, you should just wait and see. Besides, if you are in Enalica, you will be one of the first few to join, this gives you a pretty big head start on the other later-to-join members.

Religion? Ah, yessss... Actually, the staff group has been too worried about this Black Lotus thing - in all seriousness, none of us really know what it is and what it is doing in our story - so I haven't asked about it. I still say that if you want to use religion in a MOC, add it and then, unless there is a major conflict, we can make it into a canon fact. Are you up for it, High Priest Ian?

Awesome, but I meant my second reply to you yesterday.

Quoting Ian .....
What I meant for the kingdom was that the king rules over elves, but they are just another kingdom in Mythron and take all of the kings rules. Like the rulers of different cities in the factions.

That's still kind of a tall order.... You could have something like an elf clan that doesn't include all elves, though. "King" seems extreme. If you want that title, ask Brick Boy if you can use it.

Waaaaaiiit for Enalica changes ;)

I think I'm gonna stick to being an Outlaw for now. I plan to start my own guild soon, so I don't see a real point for me to change. But, like I said before, you can definitely count me as an ally.

That's pretty much what I meant. Sort of like in Lord of the Rings, where there are multiple kingdoms of elves, just like there are multiple kingdoms of men. I can consent to him not being king. He can just have the title "Lord."

I'm afraid no. I don't want clans of elves running around in Mythron.
If you do involve a elf clan, their can be someone they call Lord, but no official titles.

It is somewhat complicated, but it's easy to get the hang of.

You start by choosing a faction to join and building a character. There are faction descriptions on the group homepage to help you choose which one fits you best. Enalica is the rising star at the moment - Caleb is remaking it and getting it running properly.

Once you build a MOC that introduces your character and states your faction, you can add free builds or challenge entries. Challenges are held once or twice monthly, and typically advance the story of the group as a whole. Any builds you add for the LOM - challenges or free builds - give you points, which unlock the more complicated bits of the game like ranks and new powers.

That's the short of it. I hope you join the group - it's addictive, fun and always in need of clever new builders.

One of these day's I'm going to sit down, pretend I'm a new player and see exactly how much sense our ramblings make.

Having just joined about a month ago, I can tell you from experience, it took me a good 2 hours to understand most of it.

That's not a bad idea but there's always so much going on!
