Our previous convo was scattered with critiques of MOCs and debates of faction supremacy. It was definitely time for a new one.

LOM Fact: Freeling has been working on compiling a extensive chart of spells and charms for some time now. One day (hopefully) soon it will be released, and all you trolls and witches can start casting spells to your heart's content.

Trolls? TROLLS? What sort of magic can a TROLL do aside from fall off a bridge when attacked by a billy goat?

MOL Fun Fact: Trolling was invented by Nerogues as a way to express themselves in a harsh and uniform society. The sport originally consisted of setting a wild troll loose in the barracks.
Ugh, that's a terrible fact. I have to come up with at least some of these that aren't made up in the spot...

MOL Fun Fact: No one in the Lands of Mythron has ever built a mammoth, whereas there have been yeti sightings monthly since October.

I think it takes a certain type of magic to fall off a bridge after being hit by a billy goat...

So, when are you going to post your challenge entry?

This weekend, hopefully...I still have to make the lower half of the third wall, and the flooring is proving tricky. I think I have half of it down, but I'm probably going to have to divide it in half (half stone, half wood) because of piece count, and my supply of brown tiles is, like usual, running low - maybe I'll hide that with a bunch of rugs, or perhaps I'll go for some SNOTted wood bricks...

According to my TT R2 entry, apparently they can create magical force fields, and make creatures magically appear out of nowhere. Then again, they can also put prisoners in a room with a sword in it, so I think that cancels out any accomplishments they may have.

Wait, really? Not sure I like the sound of that - I preferred the old days when I could throw in a little magical barrier or something like that when I needed it without violating a bunch of rules.

Wut. You wont be violating the rules. Dude. The only ones that might be restricted are the ones capable of wiping out entire cities. Even then, I don't see anything wrong with maybe casting the spell to wipe out a few enemies, but not an entire city. it could be casted maybe on a made-up city, I think.

That only certain spells could be cast, and only ones already made up. So is this going to be like the Creatures system? (where you can make up things and add them to the list, if they're approved)

Rockwork tutorial

After the request of a few people, here it is!

There are a few ways to build rocks; I’ll go over them in order from simplest to most complex.

Technique #1 - Studs-up Rockwork- Basic Difficulty

Studs up rockwork is the simplest technique, and it typically has the simplest looks. Not to say that it’s bad, but it’s not particularly interesting. Here’s an example of a basic usage of (mostly) studs up rockwork: http://mocpages.com/image_zoom.php?mocid=362829&id=/user_images/84200/1371747364m

Technique #2 - SNOT rockwork - Medium Difficulty

The next technique is a combination of studs up and sideways building. Like the previous technique, it’s not very complex, but it does add some nice extra detail and texture. The basic idea is to break up the studs up rocks with some sideways rocks. Here’s a good example of this technique being used: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/373338

Technique #3 - Technic pin rockwork - Medium difficulty

Technic pin rockwork is also pretty simple; as the name suggests, it’s SNOTted rockwork hinged with technic pins to create some interesting angles. This piece: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2460 is pretty useful. Here's a pretty basic usage: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/383215

Technique #4: Textured SNOT rockwork - Hard difficulty

Now we’re getting to the good stuff. This technique is commonly and well used by TX-008 [1998] and while simple in concept (just use lots of headlight bricks, cheese slopes, 1x1 tiles, and 1x1 round plates), it’s pretty hard to get it to look right, and it uses a lot of pieces. TX-008 has a lot of good examples of this; here’s another: http://mocpages.com/moc.php/371710

Technique #5: Panel Rockwork - Very hard difficulty

I’ve saved the best for last. Panel rockwork is the hardest technique to get right; the general idea is a bunch of panels hinged to create a smooth slope. The hardest part is filling the gaps. There’s no one good way to fill in gaps, just experiment with wedge plates and studs up rockwork to fill them in. Deus “Big D” Otiosus uses this technique a lot; I’ve used it on my tourney intro. Here’s a picture with most of the panels taken off to show the hinge structure: http://mocpages.com/image_zoom.php?id=/user_images/84200/1388537713m
And a picture of the panels; note the use of wedge plates: http://mocpages.com/image_zoom.php?id=/user_images/84200/1388537718m
This technique is a good one since it enables you to use a lot of those obscure pieces that you probably don't see used much, things like Dino heads/tails and such.

Combining techniques:
Of course, these techniques look good alone, but to get the best results it's usually best to combine techniques. #4 usually looks better when on its own, but #2, #3, and #5 can look really good when combined...

#2+#3: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/373124

#2+#3: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/368980

#1+#2+#3: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/379201

#2+#5: http://mocpages.com/moc.php/372102

#2+#5: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/380009

#2+#5: http://www.mocpages.com/image_zoom.php?mocid=377328&id=/user_images/84200/1388102623m

Things to avoid:

Here's an example of quite a few things going wrong, producing some low quality rockwork: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/379797

1. Gaps: Too many of 'em. Believe it or not, a few gaps can be a good thing when used correctly - they work as cracks in the rock, and as long as they're pretty thin and there's some kind of grey wall behind them, they look nice. However, when there's this many gaps, and such big gaps too, it's not aesthetically appealing...

2. Look over your MOC before you post it: In this instance, I failed to do that - and as a result, I didn't realize that I misplaced one of the panels. Fail.

3. Don't rush your work: This goes along with "Don't procrastinate". In this instance, I spent the entire first week of the 10 day round playing Voya Nui Online Game - and as a result, on the morning of the day before it was due, I only had the ruins, minifigures, and Growlok built. Avoiding procrastination/rushing can really help bring up the quality.

4. Don't make rocks that are too plain: In this case, sure they're curvy, but they have little in terms of interesting formations. There's no greater/lesser height anywhere and everything's at the same angle - not really a good look.

I hope that was helpful!

Fun general news - Bricklink is getting a much-needed overhaul in May. From their news section, it looks like it will combine aspects of MOCpages and Cuusoo - people will be able to post and sell MOC designs, which will be used to generate brick orders for the buyers. Designers earn five percent of the cost in parts of the model. In addition, there will be monthly building challenges geared toward parts usage, which can only be expected of a parts-distributing business. The press releases have not said whether or not there will be a new computer algorithm to optimize brick orders and make life easier for the users, however, but apparently the site has a customer support team for the first time ever.

So you haven't heard? Someone proposed it the other day and I think it could be a good idea. Of course, each person must be given the chance to prepare a case for themselves.

Eg. "I should be a mod because I'm awesome"

Of course it would have to be more detailed then that (that's not my thinking by the way)

In my fairly fallacious fun facts, it stands for the original name of the group: The Myths or Landron. The Mythronians also used a secret faction group with the same initials called "The Monkeys of Lissenbough" but deleted it with the reformation of the spy/ambassador system.

but why not kill two (or 500) birds with one stone and rid himself of all the other pesky outlaws as well?

That is flawless logic!

"A few outlaws killed my family. Therefore, and instead of tracking down those few, I will massacre ALL outlaws because clearly all outlaws are murderers and scum. Nobody shall be viewed individually; every single one is a criminal to be killed on sight! Death to all in Elpis!"

I do not have the answer to that question at this time. He might do it. He has lots of LEGO, I haven't gone to his house in a while so I don't know if he would play or not, and I don't know if he builds in solid colors yet. Whenever I go over there I'll ask him. Besides having access to thousands of people, using LoM as a background for all fantasy-related topics and increasing popularity for not only LOM and Mocpages but LEGO as a whole.

To think that next week this time my dad will be meeting with the LEGO Group.

But, considering the tone of your reply I think I'll make my own world myself and keep the credit and profit to myself as well.

I'm sorry, but our styles are completely different. To me, Renaissance is Bleh. But if you like it, that's cool. ;)

Want to help me design it? It won't change much besides adding gunpowder and cannons.

We have two options, I would like some one with your creativity to help me in both.

1) Design a LoM in a Rise of the Mage-like time period.

2) Create an entirely new world using a collection of our ideas.

At Lego conventions, LUGs and groups like the GoH and LCC get their names out when current members meet there with collaborative displays. Personally, I can't go to Africa for a Lego convention (I can't even make the ones in Chicago), and I think the same goes for most of us. A mention might be nice, though.

Hello everyone. I've recently moved house and haven't stuck two bricks together in over a month! Hopefully will change that soon.

Finally will have internet access again next week, as it's taken forever to get it installed here. I hate using MOCpages on my phone. Seems like I've missed a lot though.

Welcome back! I'll recap what's happened -
- Crimson Knight Andrew TJN won the Tourney, but the Gnomes won the most victories overall for a tie between the two largest guilds
- There is a new challenge to revamp the LOM homepage to make it better-looking and increase its helpfulness for new players running through this month
- The LOM is one year old as of March 20
- The MOCathalon reduced the Birthday challenge to 8 (eight!) entries
- Rainos has started a city attack on Elpis under the command of Adam Brunsting... although we mean to attack Falmor as well next month
-The King of Mythron is dead and the Black Lotus means to wipe out all of Mythron! Down with the Empire!
- There may soon be elections to give each faction its own mod in the staff group.

For fantasy themes. Building in teams, perhaps for competitions.

Nothing is for sure yet, but the moly reason I haven't splintered away from LoM and set up my own world is because of its popularity. Very few of the worlds LEGO fans are from Africa, I hope to change that.

A point, but others, like me, might not be good builders but are gifted in creativity, activity and ingenuity. I'm probably the most active person in LoM. If you want a write up...

In fact, when it comes to the elections each person should create a writing piece stating why they should be elected. That will ensure fair democracy.

Exactly...although this time I agree. MMV and Kingdoms were the best castle line, and while this line is okay and has a nice warm feel to it, the mood/styling of the series isn't as good as Fantasy Era Castle and the set design isn't as good as Kingdoms (or Fantasy era)

I agree, especially on the Hunger Games, tragic ending or not. The other books are in a different field from either, in my opinion, so I won't compare them. Paolini had a great writing style (especially for a teen), but, by the third and fourth books I was drawing too many links to Star Wars to take the plot seriously.

I got through 11 minutes of it, but with no set theme or feel, I got bored after a while.

My version of the hierarchy would have to be very general, as each song I like has everything the others don't. I like them all for different things. Examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zPn8Pqt_x8

Each completely different, but I love them all. Which do I love the most? I can't say. The most I can say is that I prefer just about any soundtrack over just about any song with lyrics.

I didn't like A Tale of Two Cities....the old English was a bit....old for me XD

In fact, I'm really not a big reader at all, I feel like I have other things that I would much rather do...I only read a book if I have to or that I feel it would be beneficial to me (like a programming book). But reading for fun? Eh, I have several other things that I could get around to before I'd resort to a book XD

But I know for many people, reading is very enjoyable. I don't get bored with books, I've read a good number of them, but now my time is much more limited. So if I'm done with school for the day, books are not on the list of things to do.
