August UC: Enalican Treasure Rush
Join to comment
Gold has been discovered! Let me say that again in all caps as such a statement deserves: GOLD HAS BEEN DISCOVERED!

Enalican explorers have come across the remains of an ancient jungle civilization in Santuario and some islands farther south, and glittering, golden relics seem to be present in every ruin. Explorers and official treasure-hunters from all five factions are rushing to the area to claim their shares before the gold runs out.

Note: None of the factions are in outright war right now. This isn't a kill-the-other-team challenge, it's a have-adventures-and-complete-your-favorite-of-your-faction's-missions challenge. Skirmishing is, however, allowed.

Enalican Missions:
- Raid a ruin with your primary character. Dodge some sort of trap to get the treasure, or protect it from latecomers from other factions.
- Send your character or a secondary character to Santuario to enlist the Enalicans living in that area to find or protect the treasure that rightfully belongs to your faction. Provide them with weapons and turn them into a fighting force.

Mythronian Missions:
- Send your character or a secondary character to the jungles to set up outposts and stocades along the coast to protect your faction's ships as they pick up gold.
- When you arrive in southwest Enalica, obtain a ship for your faction by commandeering it, building it or buying it. Now that the Black Lotus is out of the way, your country needs to rebuild the navy it lost in the fight with Rainos.

Rainosian Missions:
- Enalica is willing to let Rainosians collect treasure, provided that the Enalican government gets half of it. Work with a mixed force of Rainosians and Enalicans to cut a path into the jungle.
- Send your character from Enalica to Rainos with a shipment of gold, then defend it from an attack by a rival Rainosian clan trying to pirate your hard-earned spoils.

Nerogue Missions:
- The ancient empire might not be in your territory, but you can still ensure that justice and order are intact. Sail with a fleet to the now-crowded waters and keep pirates from all factions away from innocent treasure-hunters. If you keep the pirates' loot, then you can make a tidy profit for your faction on the side,
- Many of the natives of the southern isles behave worse than Rainosians, murdering, sacrificing and occasionally eating each other (and some unlucky explorers) constantly. Use the influence of civilization to teach them better ways of living and maybe trade in exchange for gold.

Outlaw Missions:
- Your faction doesn't have the resources to launch ships, supply teams of explorers, set up outposts on Santuario, blaze into the jungle and come home with massive amounts of gold. That, of course, only means that you get to let other factions do the work for you. Hijack a shipment, infiltrate an exploration party, rob a vault - do whatever it takes to win gold.
- The people, civilized or not, who live in this region are mostly out-of-touch with the events of the rest of the world. Even some of the explorers from other factions are confused and disconnected this far from home. Bring some of these lost sheep back to the network by recruiting them for the Organization.

Yeah, that's the potential problem I saw with this challenge, but there's nothing wrong with introducing new characters... or digging up old ones. That gives me an idea for my challenge...

... Awesomeness. Sometimes I love having three secondary characters that I can use for pretty much anything if my primary character isn't in the right location. Also, I really want to make a jungle scene. And I also got loads of perl gold 1x1s from the Sea Cow recently, so I am really excited for this!

What faction are you going to switch to, again? As for what you could do for the challenge, I see a few options:
- Since your character is in Rainos, you could steal some gold being brought back by Rainosian explorers, preferably along the coast.
- You could send your primary character to Enalica and have him complete one of the Outlaw missions.
- You could make a side-character to do one of the missions in the challenge. That way you don't have to worry about whether stealing gold or recruiting members for the Organization is something your main character would do,

Well my character in Mythron again. And the secondary character sounds like a good idea. I Don't think exotic islands are really my thing. But still i might. I'm changing to Mythron by the way. But first i got to create a reason for it.

Really? I was originally planning on introducing a character after our story was done, but if I can introduce him now... then I guess I won't have to wait till Christmas (or whenever he finishes) to continue. So I can make another (important) character right now, even if you never see my main character?

It doesn't have to be gold. Also, I almost suggested that the empire belonged to High Orcs (or Halidra, I guess) so it's a nice coincidence that you're thinking of using them. In other words, go for it!

How about stealing some gold at sea or at some other time when the explorers of another faction get it out of the jungle? You could even go to an Enalican city to swipe some treasure or make some contacts for the Organization. If you really wanted more options, though, you could always switch to Mythron now, do one of their missions and then show how Philip changed factions later. To tell the truth, I'm not sure I want to do a jungle build either.

It's written down as "shared," but it's gone untouched by both Rainos and Enalica until now. For the purposes of this challenge, it (or at least the part with the gold) is Enalican territory.

Windmill? :P

Oh, my bad. You know, Tudor windmills might be the coming fad. On reconsideration, they would probably be the holy grail of Watkins-style building. The ground floor, or the tower part, can be made of greebly stone that slants inwards. The top floor can still be made of wattle and daub, albeit with a huge fan on the side. In a windmill scene, there is plenty of room for ruin and decay, and an accomplished builder could get the entire tower to lean over. Best of all, the traditional windmill isn't square, but round or polygonal with more than four sides.

Btw. I've actually won a Tobuscus shirt before. It's black. And it's in my room.

What does that have to do with anything?

Have you tried using Flickr? That gets people around most uploader issues. If you can't make a Flickr account, have you tried using both versions of the MOCpages uploader?

I hate the layout when I want to post more than one photo of a build - comments get spread throughout the photos (usually not on the main photo), it's harder to look at all the photos...then there's also the fact that the full site doesn't work at all on mobile devices and the mobile site doesn't have a lot of the features...

Solution 1: Only post 1 or 2 pics. I figure I can post more on MP.

Solution 2: Don't use the mobile. :P

Response 1: I only really use it to embed photos (for higher quality) to MP, so I upload all of them

Response 2: But I do practically everything on my iPad :/ I don't use my computer all that much, iPad is more convenient

For the past few days I have been recycling sets into my loose MOCing parts, and now I have a lot more of them then I started out with;and I have a collection of black parts that would make Batman happy :P I also have more parts for rocks and plants, and I have ideas for different techniques. That being said,I am looking forward to the next monthly challenge here.

Response 1: Use it only to store your images for safekeeping and use on other sites.
Response 2: I've never been to the desktop/laptop site.

Exactly - it works fine for storing images, but it's not really great on its own.

The main missing features on mobile site are notes (which I can still use without changing language on the main site since my version of Firefox is really out of date :P) and groups

It's always surprising what your old/out-of-genre sets contribute, isn't it? I've salvaged a lot of really good parts, but the ones I really want to find a use for are a bunch of modified salmon-colored plates from an old LOM mech (and that's Life on Mars, for those of you who had a moment of confusion).

Ah yeah, that sand purple looks like it would be...interesting...to use. As you know my collection is almost all non-medieval stuff, so yeah, agreed with your first point :P

I'm actually planning on making a woven rug for an upcoming build out of purist string - probably red and black

Hmm. I think I joined the LOM Flickr group with my ipad, but I'm not sure. I don't normally socialize on Flickr. Well, I admit it - I only really socialize with other builders from the LOM.

I have a few LOM pieces from a garage sale, but I can't match their color with anything I own.

I don't have a flickr account and I have tried both versions of the uploader with neither working.

My money's on you being wrong on both accounts :P

This looks like a tough one to judge. Even so, those are the two I would have chosen. Yours is a nice build, but it doesn't even hint at a jungle island. Professor B. had the best trees as far as I could see, but his build wasn't as dense with vegetation as some other jungle builds. Stephen's was neat but didn't have any especially eye-catching features. Thomas' had a nice layout and some cool features, but the gold studs as a decoration detract from it and other builders had more texture on rockwork, stonework and trees. Bombin Ben's had a great first scene, but the other scenes were fairly basic and we didn't get a picture of the first scene without mood lighting. Mine... well, I can't comment on that.

Yours actually looks like a jungle. It's dark, it's dense; it's great. Except for the two smallest trees... Mine, eh, more like a spacious forest.

Hey, don't dis yourself. As the person who's making a Santuario map, your UC is heavily inspirational for the areas closer to the mountains.

And the winner is...

Thomas of Tortuga! Since there were only 13 entries, only he receives bonus points.

Top 3 (4) entries:

Thomas: 7.75
Prof: 6.71
Halhi: 6.58
Stephen: 6.58

Also worth noting is that there's an exact tie for 3rd place, which doesn't happen often...I think...
