Round 1
 Group admin
Welcome to Round 1, where we will mercilessly cut you down to a more managablle size.

The Rules:

1- This round is a straightforward free-for-all, where the top 32 scores will pass on to Round 2, while the rest will be terminated by a Somniferrian Ancient, courtesy of Clever Crowe.

2- Time Frame - You have until the first of July, MOCpages time, to enter you MOC. Entries posted outside this time frame will be void.

3- Entries - This should go without saying, but yeah, only one entry per person.

4- Reminder - remember to say in the description box that your MOC is an entry for the 2013 Bio Cup (you can title it any way you want) and to add a link to you entry's page right in the r1 entry thread once you're sure everything's OK.
http://www.mocpages.com/group_conversation.php?id=22700&topicid=89958
When in doubt, double-check the rules and/or ask us. Better safe than sorry.

The Theme:

The theme for Round 1 is...

<--- ORIGINAL CHARACTER --->

Create a new humanoid character, toa/hero-sized.
For those of you who tend to overdo things, know that max size is considered 25cm/9.5in.
-DON'T SCRAP YOUR CHARACTER as long as you keep winning: it will represent you in the games and it will be the focus of most categories.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he meant July 1st.
Anyway, this is a very open topic. I like the idea of keeping a single character or MOC throughout the games. It may be my undoing though, considering my frequent scrap and build rate, which I'd otherwise be maintaining for all the other contests I'm in... so it may be a decision to drop out of the Bio Cup or to drop out of everything else.

Well that depends on how much you invest in your character, but if you really are concerned about keeping 1 Toa/Hero up for a couple of rounds, I wonder how competitive you think you can be when things start to get BIG later on... so you see, it's just too early for you to worry about that. 1.) So this "Character" is basically our Bio-Cup Self MOC?
2.) Could do a Complete rebuild of our Self MOC that is within the 25cm/9.5in measurements?

The original concept was indeed to use self-MOCs (or even revamps), but in the end we agreed that a completely new character would pose more of a challenge for the contestants and it would be more interesting for those among us who are already familiar with the selfs of many players..
About the character, you could see it as your Bio-Cup self-MOC or just as an athlete you're sponsoring. Or a protagonist whose story you're writing.

Hey Yuri, am I allowed to post a secondary Self MOC? Never before seen? I only have the one thus far, and he isn't due a vamp for a while yet.

You can make a new self MOC as long as it's not just a revamp of the old one. That would be the same as creating a new character and calling it your self-MOC, which incidentally is exactly as self-MOCs work.

Welcome to Round 1, where we will mercilessly cut you down to a more managablle size.

The Theme:

The theme for Round 1 is...

*Drum Roll

<--- ORIGINAL CHARACTER --->

Everything clear?

HAVE AT IT!

I have a few questions:

1. What exactly does an Original Character entail? I have plenty ideas for characters that are "original," but some are minor humanoid monsters. One example is a creature that would be a part of my Lost Souls series. Though the series itself is not original, the creature certainly would be. Must the OC have its own IP created specifically for it, or a complex role in either a preexisting or new IP?

2. I am one for creating more simplistic builds with intriguing overall aesthetics and stories. According to my peers, this is quite apparent in two of my most recent builds: Great Mage Chronos and Base Class: Bandit. My only concern is that this style of construction may appear too simplistic to those who do not understand my building style and may ultimately hinder progress in the competition. Should I focus on more complex methods of construction even if it is not quite my preferred style?

Thank you for your time.

2- You're worrying for nothing, the judges here have a wide range of different styles (I myself build virtually custom-free stuff) and so they are capable of appreciating all of a MOC's nuances.

Should I focus on more complex methods of construction even if it is not quite my preferred style?

Thank you for your time.

Maybe I'm not the best example here (since I lost in Round 1), but take a look to my last year entries, they aren't complex but got good appreciation.

I spent a total of like 8 hours about 3 of which was building this moc I plan on entering. the other hours was a mixture of failed moc attempts and just listing to music on my bedroom floor in the middle of my parts.

Just remember, folks: it needs to be about the SIZE of a Toa or Hero, not necessarily one in concept. ;)

In other words, we don't have to make a Toa, but rather a person the size of a Toa?

If it's a totally new build, then a revamp would probably be okay... though of course the judges have final word.

Well, if we told you what's coming beforehand, people could prepare a number of MOCs in advance.

The question wasn't meant to be about anything specific; I was just wondering if I should construct an OC that may be expanded upon (story included). My primary concern is running myself into a dead end with story and construction. I really am over thinking this, aren't I? ^_^'

Probably. Don't worry, the story isn't really essential. at least from my part. We'll be judging the MOC first, the story is an extra. Think of this as an opportunity to make one, rather than a requirement ;)
