I have been thinking about the MOColympics, and it's match-up system. It's actually rather unfair. Here's what I'm talking about: Let's say there are four players. A is an excellent builder, B is good, C is fair and D is poor. For a random round, A and B are matched and C and D are matched. A beats B and C beats D. Now A and C advance to the next round. Even though B is better than C, it is C who advances. This means it becomes less than building skill and more about who you are matched with. The fair way to do it would be to have every round "open", like the first round is. Then the poor players naturally gravitate to the bottom and are eliminated when the bottom half is cut for the next round, leaving the better players. This would definitely be more fair. Of course, you don't have to do it that way if you don't want to, especially since that's how it always was. Just some thoughts.

It is actually a lot fairer than that. The first round operates as a seeding system, much like a tennis tournament. How well you do in round one, ultimately decides your seeding. The stronger builders (based on this first test) are then matched against the weaker builders, just as the seeded players in a tennis tournament in the early rounds come up against the lower/un-seeded competitors. Also, for my part, what makes the MocOlympics work, is the head-to-head nature of the main competition, and seeing two builders slug it out in a category that takes them out of their comfort zones. The contest in this way selects the best all round builders as the winner, and not normally the great specialist category builders. Anyhow, it is always a lot of fun, and one of the annual events that makes MOCpages the community it is.

1. The way the match-ups work, it's A against D and B against C.
2. Match-ups give more motivation to enter. There's not many drop-outs when your opponent is counting on you to enter, whereas when it's a free-for-all, people may have less motivation because their entry isn't as important.

it's been a year already?

I remember the MOCOlympics from last year, I didn't do an entree, I wasn't too sure about how i wanted to build it. last year the theme was music right?

I look forward to entering this year! (and I would count for the T/YOFL part too!) My free parts collection is near drained, so I'll probably take apart one of my bigger sets temporarily and make it an alternative...

Well, I can't wait to see everybody entrees!

Good luck everyone! :-)

I'm not sure if my parents allow me to be participating in online contests, but for one thing I know my father is very proud of me for entering. I am saying this because of the prize: my parents may think of it as a scam, even though I have like a million-to-one chance of winning any prize.

If there's any question, just go back through the past 5 years of this contest, look up the winners and ask flat out if they received their prizes.

As for the prizes themselves, they're not decided as of yet. A good thing to look at is to go back through previous games (again) and see what the prizes were.

Good luck!

What is a smack thread?

Essentially, a smack thread is a conversations thread where players go to throw taunts and insults at each other during the games. It's all in friendly banter and good jest, at least it should be!

One of my fellow judges (LCV) is considered by many to be the King of Smack, so you can probably expect to see a Smack thread sometime in the future! Maybe.

What is a smack thread?

Smack is an art form where contestants use their wits to attempt to dominate their opponents through clever and funny quips. (Yet it generally devolves to insults, thesaurus abuse, and yo mama jokes after a few comments.) Often times the use of popular memes is lauded, though I personally find that a true smacker can write reams of original material.

Am I allowed to throw contestants deep within the mesh of my computer here, or do I have to be a judge or score-tallier to do that?

JUST so everyone knows, if I make it to round two, I'm going to lose, because I am not the best builder around(check out my creations) so, yeah.

Why would you even say that? Like, if you believe that you are going to fail, why would you feel the need to inform us about it? There is no reason you should be saying things like this. If you think you are so bad, why even enter? With this kind of attitude, no one would have a chance at getting to round 2! Stop thinking like this, and you might get farther into the contest than you thought you would!

Of course, coming in the semi-final for the past 2 years of the competition I would love to participate again this year in an attempt to reach that one round further, but my hectic lifestyle continues once again this year meaning I won't be able to make a contribution. I'll still be around to watch the competition however and support my fellow builders! Best of luck everyone!

Well, it's that time of year again! Maybe I'll have time to build this year, maybe I won't. Last year a tree fell on our garage and it basically kaboshed my entire build plans (everyone was distraught during that time). Not sure how I'll be able to do if I do have time to build, if I can't good luck to all!

Welcome Zach! Just as a courtesy, I advice you to upload a build to MOCpages prior to the contest.

To thwart spammers, MOCpages has a guardian device on all new accounts. Everything you say will be sent to moderation until your first LEGO creation has been approved. So yeah, save yourself grief during the competition by posting something now to be approved before it starts!

Think it's a good idea to sit out so I can work on a contest entry for a local Brick Building Competition or no? As much as I want to compete this year it's going to be hard with school and prior commitments.

I had the worst job at work today, fixing a door in a metalworking factory. The door and everything around it were COVERED in a thick layer of very fine metal dust. Every time the door was bumped or moved clouds of dust went everywhere. At the end, I was completely COVERED in dust, grey all over, and I mean literally ALL over. So I was inhaling this junk all day, absorbing it through my skin, blaugh. So if all that metal dust p0isons my mind and makes me go crazy, you'll have less competition! :P Heh, not really. Too many to list, especially in the earlier rounds, but check out the group conversations:

http://www.mocpages.com/group.php/21512

and any with a round number in the thread title should give you the categories and descriptions. Then search some builds from the group too - I'd set the search to 'popular' which is no guarantee of quality but usually something good attracts plenty of attention.

Hope this helps and good luck in your first MO.

Jury is still out on that one Stu! Nothing gets my creative juices flowing like a contest and this IS the big daddy but I had set my stall out to say no this year as I know it can be a big undertaking and i've not been that active recently. I wondered if I was better off just building a few things for me, no pressure or time limits.

Putting that aside though, i reckon i'd start seeing categories posted and think 'Ah man, that would have been brilliant!' so my willpower could wobble a bit yet. I do have unfinished business with this contest and I am mildly competitive ;)

At the moment, it's a definite maybe!

I have a prize suggestion. A T-shirt that says, I won the MOColympics and all I got was this lousy shirt. I just watched a customink commercial.

I'd rather they spent 50 bucks on prizes than -as you stated- a lousy T-shirt. :P Building with bricks to win bricks is more fun than winning a T-shirt. Not that I'd win this contest anyways, but just sayin. The fact of facing an opponent is half the reason to be competitive. Improving is the other half. And the prizes, well, they're that .8% Motivation. T-shirts aren't much motivation. :P

Looking like this'll be one big contest guys! Previously, the MocAthalon held the record for the largest LEGO contest. However, based on how many people have signed up this year it looks like the MocOlympics are going to be even bigger!

After checking back on it, the 2012 MA had about 196 peeps sign up for it. The 2011 MO had about 194 sign up. 2012 MO had 207. The 2012 MA has (I think) the record for most number of creations in an online, community hosted LEGO contest at 527(again, I think). But yea, this year should be solid.

Build really well, take good photos with good lighting and a plain backdrop, and follow the rules.
Of course, the most important part is to have fun!

First you have to worry about Round 1, which is the elimination round. But yeah, crisp photography, good techniques, etc.

Me and three other guys unloaded a semi today, 18000 pounds (!) of 31 doors and 8 big openers in two hours. So I unloaded at least two tons of stuff, and these are big 300-400 pound door packs. Heavy work. Then I had to change tires on two vans, with a 4-way lug wrench on 8-lug wheels that were extremely tight. 64 lug nuts on and off plus wrestling tires and jacks around. I also painted two trailers. They are now nice and clean and shiny and I am filthy and sweaty and tired. But at least the boss brought doughnuts for everyone! :D

I would have made mine more elaborate and polished, but I had so little time. But to be honest, it wouldn't be that much of a loss if I didn't make it to the next round, because currently, I am making a mecha creation.

Just stopping by, and tell my fellows -FOLs that I'm still here, although inactive for months now... I moved and I'm currently starting 4 jobs at a time, but I can't wait to get on with LEGO again!

Sadly, I won't compete this year, but I wish everyone of you the best of luck. I'm hoping to post a few creations before the end of the games (completely unrelated to the MO), but since I met a lot of nice people here, I thought this was a good place to say hello!

If you miss the outsider of last year's game (that would be me... I'm still so proud!), don't hesitate to answer! If not, you can just ignore me :)

Thanks to Chris and all the judges and admins for doing this again, you guys are saints! And I don't mean to bother anyone with this metaphore... See you soon on MocPages!

very disappointing, I think this is the most second rounders who've dropped out of an MO In my recollection - why enter a contest if you are not playing to win? - we all have real life to deal with. It is not fair for the rest of the judges, organizers and other contestants who gave it their all. Maybe some people (unless dealing with a family emergency this time around) should reconsider entering next years MO and reconsider the commitment required. To those who worked hard and didn't get an opponent, bravo for your spirit of the games. Sorry for the rant, this is not my usual post but this just grinds my gears and I am sure those that were on the cusp of making it to round two are less than thrilled about this outcome as well. Fellow MOCcers I am really disappointed.

Do you think I didn't want to compete? I too worked extremely hard for my entry, but barely missed the deadline due to having a lot of schoolwork and a band competition over the weekend. I too am very sorry for my opponent, and it's not as if I 'dropped out'. Up until the deadline, I had the fullest intention of posting, but I was too late.

there is more to competing than just building - you could have started earlier etc to afford you the time to get your entry in. Nobody needs to be truly building at the 11th hour when we get 10 days. The only one who prevented your entry from making it on time was you, not the hands on a clock. Your not upset at my comment you are upset at yourself and I as a former judge of the MO and current contestant am disappointed that there will not be an entry from you because you have surprised me in the past with your great builds. Yes there is real life - we need to learn to balance it.

You are correct that I am not upset at your comment, but I am upset at the fact that I really did not have a whole lot of time to build. I started building last weekend, and I did not have any time during the week to work due to after-school band practise 4 days and a piano lesson the other one, leaving no time for anything other than homework and eating dinner. I apologise for sounding somewhat irritable in my response to you, but the lack of building time that I had was almost entirely out of my hands.

Well you know my thoughts on this subject Chris from my post last week and I completely agree with you.

While I have in the past been a benificiary of advancing by default (including going through to the last four last year!) there is no great satisfaction in it and it can mess with you when you start taking your foot off the pedal.

I sympathise with anybody dealing with an emergency that should, of course, take precedence. But pulling out/ failing to post over time management just suggests that the competitor was never that bothered in the first place, which is a real disappointment for the judges and other competitors. Not to mention those who didn't advance but would have happily taken a place in R2 and built like mad if they had the chance.

Not trying to burn anybody or start a flamewar over individual reasons for not posting, just voicing an opinion.
