Sign up. Choose a bracket.
 Group admin
As you may know, the tournament will basically be divided into five parts: One final set of rounds to determine an overall champion and four themed brackets that will feed into it. The names of the brackets are as follows: Heraldry, Foot Combat, the Melee, and Wrestling. Each one of the brackets is just as exciting as any of the other brackets.

These are named for different aspects of historical tourneys and their individual challenges will be chosen accordingly. For example, the Melee, which originally consisted of teams of knights clashing in dangerous mock battles, is likely to incorporate a team aspect like fielding a team of specialized minifigures (not custom/altered minifigures).

As a tournament player, it is to your advantage to comment here and request a bracket that you believe you can excel in. However, the way people are placed into brackets is determined like this:
1. People from round 1 are placed into unnamed brackets 1-4
2. The ratio of themed bracket requests for the people within a bracket will determine what themed bracket those people will be put.

So, it is also advisable to rank all four brackets from first to worst to give the officials backup options. To help in decision-making, the brackets and one example challenge are listed below: (the example challenges may or may not be used during The Tourney)

Note: Just because your character may be emphasized in a bracket doesn't mean midi-scale categories won't be thrown in there. It also doesn't mean that you HAVE to use your character all the time.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Heraldry:

Strictly speaking, heraldry is anything that relates to coats of arms. However, medieval heralds did much more than draw pictures on shields. As educated, literate individuals, they were often in charge of paperwork for knights and nobles. In addition, their knowledge of knights' identifying symbols earned them the unenviable duty of identifying the dead after a battle. Challenges in this bracket strongly reflect the personal identity of a competitor's minifigure representative.

Example Challenge:

- Rise to Nobility
Not just anyone can get into a tournament, you know! To get past the heralds, build a MOC of your character showing how you proved yourself worthy to become a knight. Did you slay a dragon? Did you fight off 20 bandits? Or did you save a town by stopping a fire? Go wild!

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

The Melee:

The Melee started out as a war-game for the military elite but it grew into a hugely popular money sport. It consisted of teams of knights waging battle over tracts of countryside in an effort to capture each other, at which point the captured knight would lose his valuable horse and armor to his captor. William Marshall, one of England's all-time knightly adventurers, became one of the richest knights in his country by building his way up from tournament earnings. Unfortunately, the Melee was so dangerous that the church tried unsuccessfully to ban it, and it remained a leading cause of death among the nobility (next to the crossbow) for years. For this tourney, the aspect of teamwork and multiple characters is central (even though you won't be collaborating with any actual people).

Example Challenge:

- Team Power
Dream team, assemble! Make a team of at least three knights with matching styles and set them up in a dramatic manner. These can be any size of figures as long as they are made of Lego. Presentation and showy effects are especially valuable in this challenge. (not to be confused with photo editing - only BASIC cleanup is allowed. What is meant here is to make your team look epic - are they standing heroically in front of a beautiful backdrop of mountains? Are they on top of a hill looking down into a valley? Is a band of orcs lying dead behind them? When people look at your entry, the effect should be that they would want to join your team.)

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Foot Combat:

Swordsmanship was an important part of medieval tournaments, although it certainly was not the main event. At any rate, swordsmanship was a necessary skill for any knight, and it lasted well beyond the middle ages through the widespread practice of dueling. Pop culture of the modern age from the Lord of the Rings to Star Wars has further glorified it as a martial art. In this tourney, feats requiring your character's sword fighting skills and other physical abilities will be presented in challenges that will normally include a foe or foes to face.

Example Challenge:

- New guy in town
Your character's sword fighting skills are not that well known in the Lands of Mythron - yet. Build a MOC showing your character being insulted in some way by a tough hot-shot in a village square. Make a comeback with some smart remarks and take on the hot-shot who is then enraged and starts to attack you. Defeat him in the MOC and add the last punch of true character by paying his bill so that he can rest and get well.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Wrestling:

Ott Jud was probably the most famous of medieval wrestlers. From what little is know about him, it seems that he invented wrestling techniques including joint breaks, arm locks, and throws that were designed to cause serious injury. Here is an excerpt from what is believed to be from his techniques:
"In all wrestling should there be three things. The first is skill. The second is quickness. The third is the proper application of strength. Concerning this, you should know that the best is quickness, because it prevents him from countering you. Thereafter you should remember that you should wrestle a weaker man in the Before [Vor], an equal opponent simultaneously [Indes], and a stronger man in the After [Nach]."
Challenges in this bracket will be unpredictable except for the fact that they will probably have something to do with demonstrating your character's skill, quickness, and strength.

Example challenge:

- The final brawl
After a fierce battle between two armies, two men (one from each side) remain standing from those who fell and those who fled. Your character is one of the two. No weapons are available for either person. Build a MOC depicting the scene just before your character and his opponent go all out in the final brawl.

Please keep this thread merely to stating what themed bracket you would like to be possibly put into.

Oh. I'll see about changing then. Maybe. A shame, i liked that possible category :P

It can't be - it doesn't fit in LOM. There won't be any Bionicle-themed category as categories relating to building a scene won't be able to be built out of Bionicle.

The only way a Bionicle character would enter the scene is if a midi-scale category comes up the competitors would have the option to build bionicle versions of their characters. Another way would be to use Bionicle pieces to build a dragon or monster of some sort.

Since there are so many foot combat votes, I'll take DeSpathens' advice and choose wrestling.

Before everyone chooses foot combat, I want to mention that the example challenges are not necessarily representative of the bracket as a whole at this time. For example, any round (not only the Melee) could throw up a life-size challenge, whereas the Melee will largely focus on both actual and brick-built teamwork. Heraldry is also about more than shields; its challenges will be at least as adventurous as any other.

Okay okay....so many people are choosing foot combat....too many. We added a different example challenge to Heraldry and the Melee in hopes that people would choose something else rather than foot combat. Feel free to edit your comment to change your bracket choice.

AAAAAUUUUGGHHH! I don't know! My first choice would be Foot Combat, but, since I can't, I'll try Wrestling.

You can pick foot combat.

Remember, just because you choose a bracket does NOT guarantee you being in that bracket for The Tourney.

My character is not a swordsman and has no particular interest in Heraldry and such... I'd say Wrestling, second choice The Meelee, Third choice Heraldry, and all the way at the bottom Foot combat. I would have liked foot combat, except that my character would have to go a long, long way to get good at swordsmanship... Oh well.

Those are only example challenges. None of them will actually be used in the regular rounds, but some rounds may be similar.

Oh, and don't worry about the spats between the church and the tourney tradition - the popes gave up and gave their blessings by the 1300s.

Nope - you don't build anything except for your TT Intro until Round 1. More direction will be given when the Round 1 thread is released on January 1st.

There are four themed brackets. The challenge is an example of what you might expect from the categories that will be presented.

Depending on where you place and others around you place in round 1 will influence what bracket you will be placed into - I hope that helps.

You don't have to do the example challenge for your preferred bracket in your intro (although you certainly can if you wish), and the example challenge won't even come up in the normal rounds. It's only there to give you an idea of what the bracket will be like.
