I really don't judge movies by the rating. I don't mind when parents enforce no R-rated movies, but no banning PG-13 makes no sense to me. There's just so many excellent PG-13 movies that aren't really objectionable in any way, but you shouldn't take your 6 year-old too. I can't see the same thing being said of R, though.

I used to hate all R-rated movies, but I find my tolerance is rising. Terminator/T-2, The Matrix/Matrix Reloaded...those are all R and very good, if a little...not nice at times. :P

The one type of movies I have never watched and never will watch...Horror.

I generally avoid R-Rated movies, but not on principle. I just figure that the majority of movies that earn an R-Rating feature some stuff I'd rather not watch.

Those are my least favorites, just because they were the darkest, the most awkward and the hardest to understand if you hadn't read the books.

I haven't yet, I'm still super conflicted. I've been planning a large Post-Apoc MOC for a while that I'd have to put off again, but it does sound super fun, and I've also wanted to compete in the MA since I first learned about it. Has David made a decision yet?

Hm. I think you are actually the most likely to move on. Even though I really liked my entry, Adam put forth a pretty good one; I also felt that Infy's build wasn't ambitious enough and in that regard Mr Cab might have a shot. Great job everyone, though.

Thanks, but the difference between Adam's build and yours, is the techniques. Adam is a very classic parts, classic style kinda guy. However, you've combined a classic feel with new and interesting techniques.

Thanks; I spent way longer than normal editing the pictures, even if taking them was rushed.

One thing I'd say to everyone that moves on is ambition. Stephen and Kai can ignore this since they have small collections, but I'd really recommend trying to stretch your collection and make something big. That's what I've been doing lately with my MOCs (my 3 tourney entries especially) and I think that's one of the things that's helping me improve. The "wow" factor is a really important part of a build, and you can't really accomplish that with a small build, unless the whole thing is built at Michael Jasper quality, which I've never seen anyone do.

Large builds are nice because you can focus on lots of things; layout, colors, styles (generally need to be varied to conserve pieces), balance of detail and cleanness, and even Michael jasper type details (like the shutter table and white chair in my entry). Even those of you with small collections should try to stretch them as much as you can, at least with a 32x48 maybe.

(also a side note related to collection size... I realized within the last year or so that my collection is way bigger than I had thought it was.... So part out your sets, do whatever it takes to get your full volume of pieces in front of you; it's amazing how much that can help (as Brick has been noticing)

Very good advice!

I should certainly be building bigger things, on account of recent purchases;) My one problem is I lack some key pieces e.i. DBG tiles, DK tan, reddish brown tiles, and I'm not exactly drawing in green plates...

However, I know I can stretch my collection! I've wanted to do a 4 green baseplate MOC for a while now...but it depends on the category.

Yeah, I agree. Actually I didn't really like anything about his last build especially, but also a few others of his recently come back to the same problem: he tries to build too big, and the quality suffers as a result. Sort of like Graham's and Abby's entries to the finals of the BBG.

Noice! I've kinda been wanting moar dark bley cheese.

You get 40 of them in the Goblin King Battle (if that's still in stock).

Get it. I insist. :P

It has, as I said, 40 dark bley cheeses, as well as a bunch of 1x1 black and dark green bricks, not to mention a bunch of other dark bley slopes, several useful dark tan pieces, 2 short chains, good weapons, great minifigures, and lots of reddish brown tiles with wood patterns/stickers. It also comes with a bunch of dark brown 1x2 tiles, which are really helpful, a ton of skulls and 1x1 black plates, and several dark brown spears.

Its an immensely beneficial set, despite the price.

I don't see how you can use any of those, especially in LOM mocs. Plus specialized boat pieces are frowned upon in mocs.

So now it's a possibility that Gnomies could occupy the entire Round 5/6. However, it's imperative that you take your building to the next level to get there; inventing new techniques is probably a good idea here, as long as you're sure to show them off so that the judges see them.

At this time, we need to use the WIPs and Advice topic. Am I correct in saying that most of you have 4 day weekends this week? If so, try to post your WIP there maybe every other day or something.

Name: Andrew the Jedi Ninja

Strengths: layout and aesthetics; his creations truly tend to look fantastic. He's also quite good at architecture.

Weaknesses: Too much detail; the same issue as his brother. In this way, his builds often seem a bit messy and unrefined.

How to beat him: work on interesting architecture, rather than just flat, textured walls. Make sure that your builds are very clean (in order to please Graham, Matthew, and Mark). If you finish early, rebuild parts of the MOC to make them better to make it look more refined.

Strengths: Overall design and colors are good-ish. His textures are sometimes good. That's about it, idk why people think he's so good.

Weaknesses: Extreme arrogance. He thinks he's better than everyone else and that he doesn't have to try to make a good MOC - which, as you've seen, is definitely not true. Maybe the judges will get so annóyed by him that they'll be swayed against him as well. I doubt it though, after all people still like Caleb...

How to beat him: don't be overconfident and try your hardest; focus on wall textures.

Strengths: size, style, layout, humor. All very good. I really like his builds, actually.

Weaknesses: the judges probably don't like him or his builds; his builds tend to be messy and unrefined, as well as simple.

How to beat him: Focus on developing a unique style, and work on the layout of your scene. Humorous stories help too.

That's definitely one of his better ones. His ground and roofs are really nice, but his wall texturing, especially the stone one, is quite messy.

I'd say his best is this one:

Strengths: Texturing and lighting. Both tend to be absolutely fantastic. Techniques also tend to be pretty abundant.

Weaknesses: Application of techniques could be better. Yes, using an interesting technique can be good, but using a simpler technique that looks better is always a better idea. The real trick is mastering the art of using interesting techniques and making them look good.

If I'd played it right, I could have taken advantage of that in Round 2. His entry was very poor quality, it was clear he thought he already had it in the bag. I think one of my biggest issues was overestimating him. I figured my chances were slim in beating him anyway, so I wasn't as focused. I'll have to keep that in mind in future contests.

I agree; I hate recreating scenes. I think I've narrowed it down to Robin Hood; the first PB scene is great, but too monochrome, which means I don't have enough pieces for it and it would probably be bland; the second is just too simple.

Anyone have any links to Robin Hood scenes that could look good in the bricks?

Yeah, they're far too restricting. And besides, this is a LOM competition, not some random medieval contest. Even if it just had to have some PB/Robin Hood themes and general concepts, it could still be made LOM-like. But it has to actually include him/them? >_>

David FNJ said it has to be built from the movie he linked in the group, BUT, he also said, you could just read the plot and build whatever you think it looks like. So there's actually a lot of versatility for this category.
