"So it begins." ~King Théoden

Hello and welcome to Round 1 of the 2013-14 Middle Earth Lego Olympics! Round 1 is the qualifier determining which 32 contestants will move on to the elimination rounds!

If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to thoroughly read through the Rules thread: http://mocpages.com/group_conversation.php?id=23408&topicid=92891
Last year several people lost their “would-be” slots in Round 2 simply because they failed to read the rules carefully. That said, please take full advantage of this friendly reminder!

Round 1 ends at 11:59pm (MOCpages time) on Sunday, January 5th, 2014. No Round 1 entries will be accepted after that time. Yup, 1 full month to build for the qualifier! Anyone can enter at any time before the deadline. Enjoy it while it lasts! The elimination rounds (Rounds 2-6) aren’t half as leisurely.

Your judges are Blake Baer, Mark Murphy, Ian Spacek, Max Pointner, Michael Kringe, and Paul Vermeesch. If there are any ties, Christopher Baldacci will step in as a tie-breaker judge. Once Round 1 ends, each entry will receive a total score of ?/60 (?/10 from each judge). The players who receive the top thirty-two scores will advance into elimination rounds. The judges are simply looking for creativity, clever building techniques, color-scheme, good presentation, adherence to the categories/rules, etc., etc., all the fundamental factors that contribute to a “good entry".

REQUIRED for all Round 1 entries:

-Title your entry: MELO Round 1: [insert whatever you’d like here]

-Provide a WORKING link to the 2013-14 MELO homepage, preferably located near the top of your entry’s page. If you don’t know how to create a working link, refer to Rule #4 in the Rules thread.

-State your select category, preferably near the top of your entry’s page. Yup, there are Round 1 categories this year (instead of a LOTR free build)!

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the moment you've all been waiting for...

THE CATEGORIES: Riddles in the Dark

Select ONE of Bilbo's riddles or Gollum's riddles and interpret it (or part of it, or just the answer) into ONE solid build! How you interpret your select riddle is entirely up to you. Be creative! All we ask is that you avoid including other story themes. We DON'T want to see Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc. themed entries that somehow relate. HOWEVER, Middle Earth themed builds are of course acceptable! Broader themed builds (e.g. castle era MOCs) are also acceptable and so are "unthemed" builds (e.g. a more literal interpretation).

-Bilbo's Riddles:

1. Thirty white horses on a red hill, first they champ, then they stamp, then they stand still.
(Answer: Teeth)

2. An eye in a blue face saw an eye in a green face. "That eye is like to this eye," said the first eye, "but in a low place, not a high place."
(Answer: Sun on daisies)

3. A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid.
(Answer: Egg)

4. No-legs lay on one-leg, two-legs sat near on three-legs, four-legs got some.
(Answer: Fish on a little table, man at table sitting on a stool, the cat has the bones)

5. What have I got in my pocket?
(Answer: The precioussss)

-Gollum's Riddles:

1. What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grow?
(Answer: Mountain)

2. Voiceless it cries, wingless flutters, toothless bites, mouthless mutters.
(Answer: Wind)

3. It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, cannot be heard, cannot be smelt. It lies behind stars and under hills, and empty holes it fills. It comes first and follows after, ends life, kills laughter.
(Answer: Dark)

4. Alive without breath, as cold as death; never thirsty, ever drinking, all in mail never clinking.
(Answer: Fish)

5. The thing all things devours; birds, beasts, trees, flowers; gnaws iron, bites steel; grinds hard stones to meal; slays king, ruins town, and beats high mountain down!
(Answer: Time)

And there you have it folks! Round 1 is now in full swing!

Well, these categories are pretty self-explanatory. You're not required to specifically build from the stories. You're required to build from your select riddle and imaginatively interpret it!

Yeah, perhaps read the opening comment in this Round 1 thread (located above). If it still doesn't make any sense to you, perhaps enlist an older family member to read it and help explain. If I'm not mistaken, your brother John Daniels competed last year. He would probably be able to help clear things up for you.

You don't have to make the actual riddle. You take a riddle, interpret it, and build whatever you connect with the riddle! Like when the MOColympics had the song titles round.

Hey Ian, quick question. Can we build something related to the riddle, for example, if I were to choose the "Time" riddle, could I build a clock, or is that going to far. Also, I suppose it has to have some reference to Middle-Earth? Thanks!

Yes, a clock would be totally fine. That's just the type of outside the box build we're looking for (though there are doubtless many other clever interpretations to be had too).

I'll answer you the same way I answered another chap who asked a a similar question:
Quoting Ian Spacek I suppose there is one way you could do it, but it would have to be region/map based. Perhaps you could have Bilbo growing up in the Shire, so you could build a segment of the Shire, and then have different aged Bilbo's scattered about doing different activities as he gets older. That might work, but I still think it'd be hard. Or...maybe if you built the entire map of Middle Earth in which Bilbo travels you could get away with it...but that's quite a daunting task. I'll leave it up to your judgement! When all is said and done, it's possible to do what you've requested, but I think it'd be difficult to do tastefully.

Hope that's informative! And if you have any further questions, please share theme in the questions thread. As the contest continues, I won't always be quite as hands on in checking all the other threads.

I think the entry for the contest shouldn't be a MOC that is already existing. Otherwise it would be unfair to the other contestants. I mean, if we allow this, everyone could just rename their old MOCs and add it to the group.

Hey Ian, I'm quoting a question I left in the Questions thread yesterday in the hopes that you'll read it here. :) I was told you're the one to ask.

"Hey guys! My build is almost done. I just noticed in the round 1 thread that we can only do our build based on ONE of the riddles. My moc is an interpretation of all of them. *Spoiler*, I made minifigure versions to the answers of all the riddles. Is that ok? Hope you read this soon!"

Gracias!

I realize I already answered this, but I just want to tell you: You should probably just enter it since there is so little time left, hopefully it will keep with the rules, but I would hate to see you not enter because Ian doesn't end up answering your question.

Hey Linnea, I'm terribly sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Yeah, I'm gonna' agree with Mark here. It's a bit of a stretch, but since there's so little time and you're mainly dealing with mini-figs, I'll let you enter your MOC. Under normal circumstances, however, such a build wouldn't comply with the rules. I usually don't put on the nasty admin hat until R2, so go ahead. Perhaps make a little note in your write-up explaining what's up. Just say that you took the "Categories" at face value and built Gollum's Riddles and explain that due to a misunderstanding, we let you go ahead with it. Hope that helps!
