The Categories - discussion thread

When the categories come out, we can discuss which categories we would like to build for and come to an agreement on which categories each person gets.

I'll paste the categories here once they are revealed.

Don't unlock this topic until the categories are released.

We could go about picking the first two categories for each person like this (let me know what you think in the conversation station):

This is in order
Person 1 picks 1 category (and gets it)
Person 2 picks 1 category (and gets it)
Person 3 picks 1 category (and gets it)
Person 4 picks 1 category (and gets it)
Person 5 picks 2 category (and gets both since he had to pick last)
Person 4 picks 1 category (and gets it)
Person 3 picks 1 category (and gets it)
Person 2 picks 1 category (and gets it)
Person 1 picks 1 category (and gets it)

This way it is pretty sure we each get 2 categories that we like. For the rest of the categories, we can discuss them. For now if you guys like how the above works, we can decide who is person 1, person 2, etc in the conversation station.

1.Forced Perspective:
Any subject matter and size you wish, but the main focal point must be a forced perspective shot for that is what you will be judged on, how well you depicted the forced perspective.

2. A Pirates' Haven
If you were a Pirate, where would you like to call home? Build a sanctuary that a pirate could call his own. No size restrictions.

3. The Dog Ate my Homework
Heard that one a million times. But, show us YOUR best reason for not having it to hand in. Did it get caught in the garage door opener? Did you get attacked by a bus full of angry penguins? What's your excuse, mister?

4. How it should have ended: Ever thought a movie could have ended better, or maybe you thought of a new hilarious ending. Either way, show us how you think your favorite movie or story should have ended.

5. "Mocs of Future Past"
With the X-Men movie "Days of Future Past" coming out soon I thought why not pay homage to this cinematic universe. Build us a screenshot (not a scene with story but a SINGLE screen capture) from ANY of the previous live action X-Men movies.

6. "Everything is Awesome"
Build a fully immersive LEGO scene, like shown in "The LEGO Movie" where the entire world is JUST LEGO. No backdrops, no photoshop cleanups of backgrounds, no posterboard (like me). Just the bricks filling the entire screen the way Ole Kirk Christiansen intended. Feel free to build any type of scene you wish but remember, nothing but LEGO can be showing.

7. Rube Goldberg machine.
This one has become a fan favorite over the years while also being one of the more difficult categories to master. Create a working contraption overcomplicating a simple task. Think of Rube Goldberg's crazy contraptions, the game Mouse Trap, or the Lego Great Ball Contraption. While it is NOT required to show a video of your contraption working, it would REALLY help if you did. If you are unable to provide a video you MUST include as many pictures as possible showing your creation working at every stage.

8. Pair Dare: Select two specific kinds of pieces (for example: the 1x2 brick and the jumper-plate) and then create a MOC using ONLY those two specific parts. Feel free to use multiple colors of those bricks but they must be ONLY those two bricks. Choose wisely!

9. Serfs up!
Build a creation with a focus on the serfs in a medieval setting. What did these people do with their time aside from collecting muck? No size restrictions.

10. Go for the Gold: The winter Olympics may be behind us but that doesn't mean we don't still remember them (I mean they were what… two weeks ago?). Give us your version of a winter Olympic sport. Bobsled, moguls, figure skating, curling? Go for the gold people!

11. Life's a Beach: What is your ideal vacation destination? I know it says "beach" in the title but that doesn't have to be your choice. If you could go anywhere (on Earth, in real life. No moon landings or parallel dimensions here) for a getaway, where would you go?

12. Alien life. We always picture aliens invading our planet, but what do they do when they are not pillaging other worlds? Build us a scene showing what aliens might do at home. Are they busy mowing the snarglaf or painting the floogflarm or FINALLY fixing the nergtranser?

13. Sport of the future: Competition has been with us for centuries and changes with the times, so imagine a sport for the future and depict how that wonderful futuristic technology will be incorporated, along with our changing attitudes to physical exertion and contact, player salaries, sponsorship, etc. This can be an existing sport ‘futurised’ or go for it and create an entirely new one.

14. Bookends
Design a pair of wickedly cool bookends. Show them off holding up your library of Barbie Fairy Princess books, or whatever you read.

15. Under the sea: Whether its fish submarines or underwater landscapes; build us something that is under the sea. (Someone please build a Kraken!)

16. Monochrome build: Build anything, any subject, BUT we only want one color used. Choose wisely. To be clear, ‘Dark’, ‘light’, ‘sand’ , ‘trans’ etc. versions of colors count as a single, separate color each. And before you ask… when we say one color we mean ONE COLOR. Not one color for the top layer of the moc and then rainbow colored for the understructure. ONE color. No Photoshop (or similar application) to adjust the color, ONE color used.

17. Small Story Tower:
Build a tower at least 3 levels high telling a story or depicting a theme. IE: Star Wars Episodes, Lord of the Rings scenes, Monsters, evolution of technology, etc. Here's the catch, it can be no larger than 8x8, minimal overhang (IE, a minifig arm here, a plant leaf hanging over there, etc)

18. Frank Lloyd Wright
Build a Frank Lloyd designed structure, building, project, etc. If you don’t know any, “google image search” is a wonderful tool.

19. Video Game:
Build us one of your favorite games, whether a phone game, console game, or computer game, recreate it! Make sure to show us a picture of the actual scene from the game, detail is key!

20. Civilian Mecha: Build us a mech and pilot for a non-military application. We love those railguns/ rocketpods/power fists too, but in a world where we could conceivably build hard-suits, exo-frames, mecha, etc. then let’s assume we could find a use for them that doesn’t involve blowing each other up.

21. From Song to Brick
Pick any song and then build a creation inspired by your chosen song. Make sure you pick the right melody that suits you!

22. Future Tech Time: Build a piece of tech whether it’s a car or spaceship or even a desktop computer. Just build it how you would imagine it in the future.

23. The Chronicles of Narnia
Depict a scene from The Chronicles of Narnia fantasy book series by C.S. Lewis. Scenes can be chosen from any of the seven books in the series.

24. M.C. Escher:
You know the famous artist, if you don't, go look him up. Build one of his famous works of art, whether it be Relativity, Waterfall, Drawing Hands, The Penrose Triangle, etc. We want to see the same mind-boggling drawings made into Lego. For examples in Lego, take a look at Paul Vermeesch's "Star Wars Relativity V2", Legohaulic's "Nightmare", and Ian Spacek's "The Art of War." We want to see creativity!

25. Back in Time:
If you could go back in time, what would you find, and what will happen? Build us a scene where you and your modern equipment go back in time, and clash with technologies and people from the past.

26. Redesign a Classic Lego Set.
Choose any Lego set released in the year 2003 or earlier and redesign it. Add more details, change the minifigures, smooth it out more, do what you want to make it your own! On your entry page, provide the set number and name of the set you redesigned. If you need help finding a Lego set to remake or set name/number, the center column titled "Sets released in…" sorts Lego sets by year released: http://brickset.com/browse/

27. Cosplay Rule 63: Genderswap a character from a popular work of fiction. Harriet Potter vs Lady Voldemort? Larry Croft, Tomb raider? We want to see identifiable character traits. Might be good to include an image of the original character in your post.

28. Reverse a historical moment: a ‘What if?’ category. Take an established moment in history and change it critically, then show us the immediate or long-term impact of that change. E.g. Kennedy survives the assassination attempt. Play for laughs or treat it as a serious look at the implications of one event and how it changed the world.

29. How to Train your Dragon:
Not from the movie but a generalization. Build us a scene depicting your “hero” training his dragon. Is he successful or is the dragon just going to eat him and be done with it? Or maybe dragons are the new “dogs” of your world and you’re simply trying to get him to relieve himself on the paper instead of your couch this time? So show us your best depiction of training a dragon, whatever that may be.

30. You’re Busted!
Build a bust! No, not someone getting arrested, I’m talking about a statue from the shoulder up! It can be a real person or a fictional character but it must be “life sized.”

Quoting David .
Did you mean all six?

Also you mean we go in order of who posts here, then the last person (of us five) gets to pick six and we go backwards in order of who picked?

Yeah, that's what I meant.

Yup, backwards from the order we are doing now. Sound good?
