I was thinking about suggesting that you guys come up with a category and give it to us when it starts so there's no way either of us have time to... Cheat? :P

Is it too late to change it? :P My idea was going to be based on the Iron Builder contest on Flickr.

Here's a brief description of my potential category:

Based on the contest on Flickr. The idea is that you pick a piece that is fairly unusual and try to use it (prominently) in as many high-quality builds as possible. So it's about a balance of quality and quantity to win. (you'd get to choose a piece freely, but choose wisely - a b0ring or easy piece may detract from your score. Also, it must be the same piece in all your builds, and in the same color, although you can include as many of it as you want)

As for judging and more complete rules, I was thinking a max number of builds and up to 5 points per build

I like this idea better, but there's no unique pieces that I have a lot of. :P

We decided on a max of ten :P

They don't necessarily have to be rare pieces, just pieces you can use creatively. Technic teeth, Indiana Jones whips, etc can be good pieces if you use them prominently and creatively.

Well that defeats the purpous of a moc-off though, because if I only had time for one build but he made ten, he would win no matter what. (and vice versa. ;) )

Yeah, that's true.

Yeah, that's true.

The idea of Iron builder is efficiency - balancing quality and quantity. Small builds help

Mmhmmm....
Just so I'm clear, I have one piece to use in all these builds? Or is there a unique piece for each build? (I know, dumb question, but I'll end up regretting it if I don't double check)

I say we see how well we can use the piece, but we only do it in ONE build. This is a moc-off, not a mocs-off.

In that case, I think it would be best to settle on once piece for the two of you, unless you have enough of it to fit several of the same piece in one MOC, used several different ways.

The problem with one build is:

1 build -> people want to build big -> less focus on the specific piece

Showing that you can build quickly and manage small space well (which I've noticed it something that both of you could work on) is key for this, and I'd say that multiple builds shows off plenty of skill.

Well, the LOM challenge sounded like a good idea... But you're right, (I'm not saying I'm better than you) I am better at building castle mocs than other things.

Do you like sci-fi? That's a LITTLE bit out of our comfort zones... Or a pirate ship, or something.

And I'm with you, I still want to do a Moc-off.

I very much enjoy sci-if, though I don't build it much. we could possibly do that and the LOM challenge... Maybe not. I am very flexible, so a sci-fi category sounds good. Should I come up with one? I have an iron builder vignette made, but I don't really care if I don't use it. I'll just post if as a fun MOC them.

Yeah, go ahead and post it as a fun moc.

Here's a few sci-fi ideas:
Protecting the city; build the city police force holding off a dangerous horde of space pirates from taking the city. It can be anywhere, no need to be a regular city on the surface of earth, it can be anywhere.

Hangar Bay; build a landing bay on a space freighter. It can be a small, one fighter bay, or big enough to fit a whole fleet.

In the Streetlights; bBuild us the streets (or just one street:P ) of a boom-town, where classes of all levels dwell, under the surface or up in the sky, you decide. Are there speeders for transportation, or do they all float around in bubble cars? Is everything electric, or did the age of steam make a return for a cheaper way of engineering? You decide!

You can pick the one you like most. :D
