I think this has already been addressed in a previous conversation. simple answer is that we can't at present and since there are alternatives available (like hotmail) there are no intentions to add it.

Andros covered it perfectly. Keep in mind, too, that Sean's intent for this site is to remain as "Lego-oriented" as possible. While the groups allow us to talk about any subject to some degree, chatting ability would certainly extend that, and more than likely be another step away from the identity of the site.

If we can't get a chat system, how about a message system, similar to Facebook, a lot of times you may come across a creation that you'd like to talk directly to the Creator and not to the rest of the MOC Community!?

Interesting...don't know if that's been considered before. I'll ask Phippy if that's come up in any of his conversations next time we pow-wow. Sean and I haven't discussed it, though.

Could groups and competitions be distinguised diffently?
Idea:
Competitions still use normal group interface and mechanics, but get loaded into a pool of competitions which displays accross a scrolling banner, for advertising the competitions on the Homepage.
The banner could include links to the competition's group page.

Currently competitions are heard of by word of mouth or through Mocadvertisement. I missed out on the Mocathlon because I didnt know it was happening... ~Thoy

Yeah, a Private messaging system would be cool. All forums I know of have one, Flickr too. We could call it MocMail or something.

yes! yes! yes! have been wanting one forever! also do you think we could also get a "friend" thing, it doesn't mean the person is one of your favorite builders he's just a friend and you could chat with them on the new chat thing *hint* *hint*

I remember during the Mocolympics His Highness Supreme Overlord Commander Phipson (official title) created a chat room that he and the other well known AFOLs would visit periodically and we'd get hooked on because of the chance to talk to one of 'em in real time. I liked that about the mocolympics and I (and probably several others) would love to see that again.

YEAH! And can you also make a time-travel option! And a happiness dispenser!

Yes, I want a private messaging system.

I hope Sean considers it.

I don't think Sean's perspective has changed (although, he could always surprise me). We've been of the mindset that chats can open doors that draw us away from the goal of MOCpages...which is the sharing of the hobby of Lego.

In fact, I've definitely found this to be the case when joining chats with other AFOLs outside of MOCpages. We end up going off on tangents that have nothing to do with Lego at all.

I will say, however, that if anyone has friends here on MOCpages that want to do a chat, you can certainly start one elsewhere (which is precisely what Phippy did, and we have a ball with it). Fire one up somewhere, let other friends here on MOCpages know where they can go to join in, and you're off and running.
