Hmm...that would definitely be frustrating! I checked out your home page on my own compurter and everything looks good. You mentioned re-doing your page. Have you already attemtped a fresh home page? And if so, is it also continuing to go blank? Let's start there.

yeah, it's annoying... I've just redone my homepage. my homepage has blanked out about 3 or 4 times now. fresh homepage? if you mean redoing my homepage, yes, creating a new account, no. it goes blank every now and then...

I just wanted to see if you had tried re-creating your home page before I passed this along to Sean. At this point, I'll let him know about your situation, and hopefully he can intervene or advise me as to the next step, depending on whether he thinks it might be a glitch within the system, or something on your own computer. I'll check back when I've heard from him.

Sean's suspicion is that there may be some HTML dialog in there somewhere that's causing the disruption (either incompatability, or perhaps a typo). My suggestion would be to clear out ALL of the HTML and see if that eliminates the problem.

If you want to add the HTML back in, I'd say do so with caution, and check to see that each addition is functioning properly before adding more.

Give that a shot, and let me know how it works out.

You say your "home page is fine," do you mean it's stopped coming and going now and the problem has switched to you not being able to edit? Or is it still going blank from time to time IN ADDITION to the editing problem? I'm playing the middle man between you and Sean for the moment, so I'm just asking to be clear when I pass along the message.

Thanks.

My page just went blank as well. Maybe it's because of too much stuff, but really I just had a pic and some links to other peoples pages. Thanks, Aidan

Thanks for letting us know, Aidan. Can you do me a favor, and let us know if it happens again? If it continues, I'd like to make Sean aware of it. I've been to your home page a few times (big LOTR fan, too!) and I know you've not put a bunch of HTML-based accessories on there - so the event wouldn't be a result of that.

Keep us posted, if you wouldn't mind.

I think there may have been a problem with the database yesterday. I couldn't view my side bar on the home page, but I could on any other page.

it's come back today so I'm guessing the issue has been fixed.

I hadn't heard from Sean about him doing any tinkering, but the pages were down not too long ago, and I'm wondering if he may have been making some adjustments.

Before I start sending him a barrage of emails for various problems, I think I'll wait to see what the day brings...

Guys, if your pages are still showing signs of problems as of tomorrow morning, chime in here real quick, and then I'll pass the info along to Sean. But first, I'd be grateful if you could check some time today to see if the problems are still persisting (I appreciate your patience on this - since these aren't hyper-critical issues, I just want to make sure I don't waste Sean's time). Thanks so much!

was fine yesterday but this morning the problem has returned. the stats are there on the home page, but when you click on the "you" button everything on the right is blank. no stats, no menu options, nothing.

I figured out why it was working yesterday but not today. I updated my adblock plus filter subscriptions earlier in the week, which is when it stopped working. A completely unrelated error with a download caused other problems with my laptop - so I did a system restore which removed the adblock update. But today adblock plus reinstalled the update so the problem returned.

I'm guessing: since there is usually an add above the left bar, ad blocker just blocked the whole thing.

I'm having no luck unblocking ads/the stats bar for this website. could you post some instructions please.

edit:

ok I've sort of worked out how to get the stats bar back, but it isn't ideal as you also have to switch off the ad-blocking for this website.

first, select tools,
then, adblock plus preferences
now select "add filter"

you should see an empty box with "new filter" written above it. Type in the box @@, then cut and paste the address from the address bar of your home page after the @@.

select apply. if it has worked the stats bar should appear immediately, but so will the banner ads.

if anyone can figure out a better way let me know.

what this means is that adblock plus will be disabled on this page only, the rest of mocpages and the net ads will still be blocked as normal.

It seems your right, when I use Firefox it wont show the side bar, but when I use regular Internet it does, but I don't know if I have ad-blocker or not.

Yeah, it's Adblocker. If you want to see everyone's activity bar you have to disable it for MocPages by going to the Adblocker stop sign, clicking it, and hitting "Disable on MocPages.com".

You can edit your home page at
http://www.mocpages.com/edit_homepage_FORM.php

"If you're using an ad blocker, it might be blocking the sidebar. I'd recommend turning it off. Also remove any HTML from your home page that you're not familiar with and/or have not written yourself."

Hopefully that will do it for you. If you find you're still having problems, let me know. Thanks for your patience.

well actually I'd like to know why it was happening. I know the work around we're using works, for those of us who really don't want to see any ads, this isn't ideal.

EDT+++

I've reported the issue to adblocker plus as a false positive.

I've played about with the adblocker plus settings and it appears that the information reappears only if you disable the filter ##advertisement-swimlane. I'm trying to find out if there is a way to filter this so the exception only applies here, but I'm not having much success.

I'll have to wait to see if the false positive report yields any positive action. But it might be worth looking at the coding for that page.

Let me tell you why I don't like adblocker...

MOCpages is free to all of us right? What do you think pays the bills to run the site? That's right, ads. When you enable adblocker )or similar programs) the ads don't show, which means that Sean doesn't get paid. So basically, in my mind, using adblocker is stealing from Sean while you're using his site for free.

Let your concious be your guide.

I spoke with Sean once again, and he even took the time to look into it personally (I'd send him a box of chocolates for that one!). There's nothing wrong on MOCpages end. He went ahead and removed the HTML from your page, which had some errors, but that's as far as he can go (and more than he needed to do, to begin with).

Hopefully this will have done the trick, but regardless, I'd urge you NOT to incorporate additional HTML code into future pages, as we see constant problems resulting from it.

Best of luck!

I'll report a problem too, as it's happened on a few occasions over the past few months...

So every once in a while, MOCpages will remain completely inaccessible. I go the the page, but it says something like 'Can't access server database' or in safari it says 'failed to open page.'

I assumed it's because Sean's making some changes, but when it goes away, during that time I have found that other people have done things, like written in groups, which means that it must not have happened to them....

It's not acting up now (obviously) and the last time it did do was... ah, I can't really remember, maybe half-a month ago?

Or maybe it was last week... sorry, I don't really remember.

I think what you're experiencing is a timing issue. People will be adding content to the site until the very instant it becomes inaccessible. Likewise, the moment it returns, content is once again being added. Unless you somehow manage to open MOCpages at the very instant it returns, you will find additions and changes.

As for the reason for it's inaccessibility from time to time, I haven't spoken directly with Sean about it, but am assuming as well that it's a maintenance period. And, he hasn't told me otherwise, so I think that's a safe assumption.

I admit I'm not particularly computer-savy (although some members here are, and by all means chime in here if you're one of them), but we're finding the HTML code to be a constant source of problems for members...and for Sean, because members are constantly asking him to "fix" the problems the HTML seems to cause.

It might be another issue, but a high percentage of the time the added code work is the root of the problem. I'd advise you to wipe all of the additional HTML from the page first, and see if that relieves the problem. If it doesn't, then we can start looking at other potential causes. Cool?

HTML

I can speak from experience here:
Images:
standard links work fine, ex:
<img src="image.jpg" border="4" width="700" height="525" alt=""></a>

Images with embedded links work too, ex:

(this is one of my Clonet*rd City group links. Not advertising, here, it's just that it's a good example of the type)
</a><a href="http://www.mocpages.com/
group.php/15136"><img src="http://www.brickshelf.
com/gallery/azazaza/TBFCC/main.png" border="0"></a>

Standard links work fine:
<a href="http://mocpages.com/group.php/15136">My Awesome Group</a>

Coloured text, tables (although they can mess up the page format if misused, so I wouldn't recommend them), youtube vids (using the old non-iframes code), etcetera work fine.

However: "awesome" and "cool" html widgets, like the little animated frogs, the irritating cats and moustachioed tomatos with the speech bubbles, the dancing writing ninjas, the rodents in the wheels, the visit counters, etcetera, etcetera, ad nauseam: those are <b><big><i>notorious</i></b></big> for causing page messups. Generally, if you just copypaste it from some other site and have no idea what it does or how it works, you're better off not using it. As an example, it's very easy to set up a 5000x5000 image on any page you care to name, messing its format up and causing great irritation. Same for posting "COOOOO/~/OOOOL" in the "Introduction" section of a new moc; sure it makes you look "cool" (and by that I mean "mentally differently abled") but it messes up the Recent page. Especially if you click the "post" button multiple times because nothing happened.

Now, if you want your problem fixed, start by deleting your "lawful/rational/orderly" thing and the twinkly uncle sam you have on your homepage. For one thing, they make you look like an eight year old. For another, Sean has quite specifically told people NOT to use them under any circumstances so often it isn't funny.

Step one. Remove the "I am a blue white" thing, the sparkely Uncle Sam and the hit counter thing. Those HTML codes are messing with your homepage. We've been telling you to remove them from the start but I see they're still there. I'd put money on it that those things are your problem.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, Seans' lost patience with the constant problems caused by members adding more than just text and pictures (which is the recommended format). We know the site functions properly when that arrangement is followed, but have seen endless problems when additional elements start getting added.

Sean was good enough to take time out to look at your pages personally, and fix the problems. But, I'm quite certain he won't be willing to do it again (especially when he found that the problem was caused by HTML additions of yours the first time around). I hate to say it, but I'm afraid you're on you own this time.

What I'm seeing right now on your home page includes some widgets that may be an issue. Try once again to remove all of the problematic HTML additions and see what happens. Let us know if you run into the same problem, and then we can take the next step.

I hate to say it, but I'm afraid you're on you own this time.

just FYI- it's still not working... and i've got like, nothing on my page... it's really irritating...

Here's a silly idea. Everyone that posts in this thread that's having problems has SOME sort of HTML on their page. How about taking it all out and JUST using plain text on the page for a while and see if that clears up the problem. Try it without any pics, links, bold type or anything, just for a while. I think that may help.

Try it and let us know, thanks!

I edited my homepage today. The preview was fine but then when I saved it, my homepage just had the welcome message appear like when you've only just joined. I keep trying to edit my homepage but anytime I click 'Preview changes' it just refreshes the page. It won't even let me see a bloody preview.
IT'S SO FRUSTRATING!!! HELP MEEEEE!!!

My guess is that you're probably trying to add a bunch of stuff with HTML right? Try using JUST text and see if that changes anything. Using too much HTML on a page can really mess it up and Sean doesn't like all that "jumpy" stuff on the pages as it slows down the rest of MOCpages.

Try text alone and see if that works.

Not such a silly idea.
If I could have my homepages washed, and have everything taken off, I would be happy! only thing is, I can't edit it at all :(

can you do anything about that?

You're using a marquee code on your homepage. You can't edit your homepage with that. The only way to fix it is to use a smartphone or anything like that.

yeah, I know, but I don't have anything like that :(

I guess you'll have to delete your account, then.

It's not like you couldn't have seen this coming; there's dozens of people who've come across that problem in the past.

Or, you could just live with it until you gain access to an ipod/pad/whatever.

They say suffering builds character.

I don't particularly want to delete my account. :(

What am I? a dumb idiot? of course I know that now, but I put this on right at the start- i'd take it off if I could :(

I'll just live sadly until then :P
