I don't know. In "Under the Pyramids", the narrator mentons local superstition that the Sphinx is carved to represent half-human, half-animal mummies that, paraphrasing here, "have inhabitted the land longer than Man" and were these weird, horrifing...things. Such would be an explanation for this:

The story is really quite terryfing and almost mentally straining, felling as if one is really trapped hundreds of feet beneath the ground. (Read it, Ewen!) Also known as "Imprisoned with the Pharaohs".

Geez, yeah. You know, an interesting point often brought up is the fact that the dating of the Sphinx is based entirely on the broken stele that said, as I recall, "Khaf". It IS in front of Khafre's pyramid, though.
As for the great pyramid, I've heard everything from ancient observatory, to Atlantean power generator, to even such things as an entrance to Agartha..

Who knows, it's entirely possible that at one point the pyramid was a typical exaple of the worksmanship of the time, but over thousands of years of sticking out like a sore Paganist thumb, was damaged enough by Islamic zealots to appear unlike surrounding ruins. Boy, that sounded exactly like the opening of "Stargate". I assume you've seen it...
