Do you actually "play" with Legos?
Join to comment
I mean like take a Knight and Troll or something in each hand and have them play fight.
Even as a kid I never really "played" with my toys but instead used them as inspiration then Muppet Babied everything (aka used my imagination).

Right now though in college I pretty much do the same thing. Use the Legos for inspiration. I build and imagine. It helps get the creative powers going when I need to work on a website or write a creative story or whatever. Sometimes I do it just for fun too. :P

So when people rate a Lego set for playability it really doesn't apply to me since I'd never physically "play" with them anyway. Instead I'd rate it on inspiring ability or something if I had the choice.

I mean no offense to "play" or those who partake btw.

Do you "play" with your Legos? Or do you just build (which is play too but not the kind I'm making the subject of this topic)? Or something else?

I fiddle and swoosh about, but I would not say I 'play', per se, with them. If I ever get around to finishing those wargame rules, I might 'play', in a manner of speaking.

I used to, and sometimes still do. Rarely. But my most recent MOC is extremly swooshable, so it's hard to resist. I accidently designed the middle into a grip to hold it by, and when I picked up the finished product for the first time... Swoosh.

AH, well, I sometimes find myself swooshing ships around, and I slam two figures into each-other to see if they would hold to kids playing with them, but I really don't "Play" with whole stories and such, at least not like I used-to. I get plenty of play by making comics, where I can get blood and action affects in too! =D

I don't play with my creations, and doing so would be analogous to playing with guns. My recent models are so realistic that I practice proper gun safety when handling them, especially my latest Thompson SMG magazine that holds real ammunition. I have to be careful now and playing is not an option, this is engineering.

Yes. Even though I do build for display only, I do "play" with legos. But they aren't the kiddie ways of playing, (smashing minifigures together and making weird noises), instead, my minifigures take on a more mature way of playing. Meaning that I discuss more, well, disturbing matters such as racism and genocide rather than "lets save the princess in the big blue castle!" way.

Maybe not what you call playing,but...Its fun.

I think my second sentence was a bit misleading, I build for display not very often to never. The reason I do what I do is for playing purposes.

I've always looked upon Legos as simply an artistic medium for self expression. Much like an artist uses a paint and canvas...
(Though that doesn't mean I occasionally pick my old Slave 1 and make swooshing noises when nobody's looking!)

I'm with Xiaz. When I make a new fighter I'll make the little noises and swoosh around for a while until reality sets in and I realize how old I am. Me, Ian and Evan will have the occasional Brikwar though, not sure if that counts.

Finally a topic I can relate too! When I use LEGOs I use them fitting on what I made em' for. If I make a vig, I act it out to see if it fits what I'm trying to build. If I make a battle scene I leave it. If I have a minifig clone, I look at it and feel good. Other times I'll make a base and let the minifigs duke it out with their vehicles. =D But no, not banging them around saying "Now I will use my hurt ray to...hurt you!" *person then rips minifigs head off and chucks it across room yelling "I DESTSROY EVIL!!!"* No, I don't do THAT.

I've made attempts to play with my Lego creations. Even when I build with play features in mind, smacking them together and launching missles doesn't hold my interest for long. I guess my brain just doesn't work that way anymore (sob, sniff!).

Never really used to "play" with my LEGOs, not when I was kid, and not now either. What I've always found most fun was building, rearranging, setting up new scenes, that sorta of stuff, but playing really wasn't high on my list of priorities. I guess you could say that I enjoy the creative side of LEGO much more than the "playing" one of it, but that must be also the reason why I don't see LEGO as a "toy" per se really...

My 11 year old brother and I sometimes make up RPG type games, with battles where you make your move, then your opponent makes a move, or where you roll a dice and move that many spaces, and try to get a treasure or something. I also use minifigs as chess pieces when I play chess.

If you want some rules to try out, I made this a little over a year ago. Lots of info here but the game itself runs quite smoothly once you get the basic rules down.

Play? I used to make stories, but I never, EVER smashed two figures together as hard as I could. I was always so nervous when a friend came over, and they would start treating my LEGO like some cheap action figures. It grew so bad that I stopped having friends over. I always was gentle, and I re-enacted stories with complex storylines and plots. I don't play anymore, but I build. I love posing minifigures and all that (That's the main reason that I like LEGO!), but no, I do not 'play' anymore.

Well, since I gave all my real LEGOs to my siblings when I went away to college (a huge mistake on my part), I really only build with virtual 3D LEGOs now (see my homepage) http://www.mocpages.com/home.php/24689

Anyway, the stuff I build I use as "imagination inspiration" and play out battles & such in my mind. "There is no LEGO spoon" (if you look at the title of my homepage, this reference makes sense)

Sometimes I stage 3D-rendered battles in LeoCAD, using the Brikwars "rules" system (if you can call it that). The battles have to be fairly small, otherwise LeoCAD lags horribly.
http://www.brikwars.com/

I have to agree here, I use the legos as imagination kick starters. I have been successful in instilling that same ability in my daughter. She is 9 and now loves legos and is becoming quite the builder.

I do a bit of both you might say. On one hand, I build for asthetics, so I try not to handle them too much, yet on the other hand, one has to be sure that the project has been built with the sturdiness, or in the case of my mecha, the flexibility desired. As such, I will take them and pose them in many different ways as if following the action of a battle to see how it "moves". Of course, at this point, noises are almost always unavoidable. ;)

Ya know, I'm not sure I EVER actually "played" with them. Even as a kid, I mostly built for the sake of the creativity aspect. If it was a set, I'd put it on the shelf to admire it for a while, and then canibalize it for parts eventually.

I suppose the swoosh thing counts. I'd build a ship, then get on my bike and ride down the street at top speed, holding the ship close with one eye closed. I'd picture it hitting near light-speed velocities. That was a lot of fun. But then the innevitable happened. I mean one hand on the bike, one eye closed - it was only a matter of time! Yep...crash of the century!

I played with Lego. Actually I did *everything* I could imagine with Lego; Roleplaying with City (even before the appearance of the minifig). Train layouts with decoration; running the train. Technic; experimenting with working machines. -Building other toys with Lego, like pinball machines, projectile cannons, pillars and bridges for my Märklin train layout, etc. -But most of all; I constructed and build with it continously.
===
Today I only construct and build. My daughters sometimes use the things for a little role-playing, but not much. Now I build, (trying) to make spectacular MOCs and bring them to exhibitions. (Internet and MOCpages are like a continuos-running exhibition! ;-) )

If it is a vehicle then i will swooshwalkmove it for fun, showcase the features to myself sort of.If it is a brick built minifigure, like glados, i will role play with my chell minifigure. In conclusion i use my mocs in conjunction with minifigs , admiring the moc, but PLAYING with a minifigure. Bricks and figs are like yin and yang, minifigs populate the lego world, but bricks create that world.

Of course I do. But now, as I get older, "playing" will lose its appeal. As I am 11 at the moment I do, indeed, play LEGOS with my bro, who is 9 and loves blowing things up. Plus, thats the fun part about them. You can build whatever you want, your imagination is LIMITLESS.. Whenever you get a box of LEGOS you can guarantee that it will be different each time. Some LEGOs are for display, and thats alright, but you have to at least have a battle or two with them, right? I've loved LEGOs since I was 3, playing with the Duplo sets. Even then I,d have Bob the builder die in a horrible crash. (I was a violent child.) So when I play LEGOs make me happy. And that is their sole purpose.

I did.....when I was six.....Sometimes,when I complete a custom ship, vehicle or mecha I swoosh it around and try some of the functions(oppening and closing cockpit, hiding and unhiding hidden weapons etc...)But it would never come to mind that I would smash minifigs in each other and make weird sounds and stuff.

some times (most of the time) I make swooshing sounds and gun sounds when i'm building. I dont know why i do it though. I've been doing it as long as i can remember building with legos

I often play with my LEGOs, not as much as I used to, but it still happens a lot. Besides playing Brikwars, most of my play has to do with mindless destruction and has little or no story. More recently this has been building different ramps and sending all the cars in my collection off them. Some times I try and get them to land right, but most the time I purposelessly hit the jump at an angle so it will send the car flipping along the floor sending parts flying in all directions.

Some times I also arrange my cars in wreck scenes, carefully removing parts or attaching them at odd angles to give the appearance of a real car crash.

Occasionally I have gotten a few LEGO cars and had them chase each other around, slowly losing pieces with each lap around the house until only one is left, but I haven't done that in a while.

All this talk about playing with LEGOs is making me want to have a friend over, grab some figs, and pretend we are 10 again and have them go on an adventure...

Nowadays i mostly see LEGO as a great basis for versatile model building. (I usually say that if i get tired of my desert camo army builds i'll make a LEGO straw hat out of them!) However - i do build with playability in mind because that's what LEGO means to me, so i too do test runs of my builds to check out accuracy and/or 'coolness'. That also means testing the latest jet fighter for swoosh-ability or running the latest army build across the tabletop to see if it looks deadly enough while on the move.

I guess the parameters of "play" need to be defined to accurately address this question. I would have to say that LEGO at my age has become more of a medium for my artistic endeavors. There is a certain sense of, "Lookie what I did," that I don't believe any of us can deny we get from completing a difficult build. That is my main motivator.

However...

I do fly my ships around the room making a rumbling noise in my throat to give the thrusters life, and there is the occasional, "pew, pew," sound that the laser cannons make during said flights, but does that qualify as "playing." Maybe. I think it's just an artistic device to make sure that the ship has the qualities I look for in a spacecraft. Who knows? I'll let you be the judge.

IDK yo, but i personally find it lots of fun to stop-motion my legos, its kind of like playing, only after your done, and you watch the movie, it looks like they are playing by themselves. sorta like playing, but way more fancy!

I love doing that! My problem is that I love it for 3 hours, then get board and by then only have about 20-25 seconds worth of movie. It is really a shame because my cars just beg to be made into a stop motion car chase with a bunch of spectacular crashes. But I tried it, it looked OK, but I got board before the first crash.

Yes, I play with them. Last year at Christmas I set up my Emerald Night with extra custom coaches around the tree with all of the Winter Village sets in the middle. I would run the train around a little bit, stop, put passengers on and take some off, and then rinse and repeat. I was also collecting a bunch of Army minifigs (with the help of Battle Brick weapons and such) and they would battle the Alien Conquest sets. Awesome! I definitely want to finish that "theme" one of these days.

This may be a little embarrassing, but even at 13, I play with my Legos.
Especially in the winter, I take my Ice Planet 2002 mini figs outside and have them mine in the snow.

13? I'm 20 and still play this my LEGOs. Not so much with the Minifigs (I never did that), but I often have car races and have my Airplanes do battle. Both activities usually end with at least one (some times all) the MOCs I was playing with in multiple pieces with imaginary fire around them. :D

It depends on what I build. If it's a small plane or spaceship, I'll swoosh it around.
I did fly this monstrosity around , though. (old creation, excuse all the pretty colors)http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/360667
I'll drive around small tanks or other vehicles, too.
