Quoting Dennis Price
All of these dreary, depressing stories where the hero fights some great evil against overwhelming odds and somehow saves the day.
Can't the great evil win once in a while -- or at least order out for pizza?
I can't believe I'm the one to say this, but not everything has to be funny. It's good to throw a pun in there every once in a while, though I enjoy a compelling adventure story with the odds against the hero and the villain holding all the cards.
Besides the hero always needs to win in the end, maybe not along the way, it's always good to have the hero face defeat from the villain a couple times. If it's a good story you begin to connect with the hero and want him to succeed.
That's just my opinion. I can appreciate where you're coming from though.
