Yes, i do like debates. Nice idea! I think that rather than parachutes, and better than drop pods is an Armored Combat Suit. Not quite a hardsuit, more of a power armor. It fills in the space between the body and the inside armor with a gel that reduces the shock of impacts and protects the user. we can jump from space and inertial-dampners can reduce speed.
