Those MAOX alties (my word for all the alternate universe-ers) have got our territories completely wrong! The COP doesn't control any territory on that side of the Earth. Join me, members, in a distinguished mood of indignation!

Yea, but still, you'd think the "Imperial Loyalists" would have Tarsis as their base, not some random place 50,000 light years away that hasn't been in the Coalition since forever.

DeltaKevin made that, it's between COP, UNE, and EOS, no MAOX. And the COP win there, probably because it's Tarsis. Attacking Tarsis would be like 9/11 to the COP as it was to us Americans.

Not yet. Maybe, come morning when people see this, there'll be more support. If there's one thing I don't stand for, it's getting publicly available information wrong.

It's about the billionth time I've linked this, but this map is very important if you're making a new story in this universe: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thenotsogreat/3955009724/

I prefer the analogy "Stuka dive bomber on French civilans", or maybe "Teabagger protest group on a democrat mayor's town hall".

Perhaps the best one is: "...fall upon our enemies like the Roman army on everything else before the Huns drove the Germanic tribes into the Empire."

Emotion obstructs duty
Duty must go unobstructed
Purge thyself of all emotion
And steel thyself against thyself
Go forth my sons of the Empire and claim what is rightfully ours
The worlds of the universe will be ours to command
So long as you live the spirit of the Empire shall not be broken
You are the grip of the Empire, spanning countless worlds
And you are the blade that strikes deep into the hearts of our foes
You are the saviors of the People
And you are the demise of our enemies.
Go forth and conquer.

We have victory, he even increased the size of our territory and then tried to claim that we were upset over how small we were, not that we were in the wrong area.

That's kind of... immature behavior. But, I can tell this guy is upset over our strict code of truth, so let's not spam him or attack him or anything.

We're a bit busy here. Given the history of the Coalition, it certainly could have been done 30,000 years ago when the COP owned the entire Milky Way, but now we're down to a fourth (or is it a third), fighting all kinds of threats. We're very powerful, yes, but this empire is a but a vestige of what it once was.

We're pretty much too busy fighting here. That, and there's a lot of unsettled space within the Coalition yet. That, and it's take years and years to get to another galaxy.

Why don't we invent an experimental warp drive thing and send a ship to another galaxy then create some wormhole and send more ships and grow our empire away from those UNE dogs? or will that just kill the point of this?. Personally I like the idea but what are your thoughts?

No tech. Well, we have tech, just not that advanced. Our Warpspace engines a temporary hole into another realm of existance, which the ships then fly through and exit at a correpsonding point to the real world via a network of navigational and communication beacons. Space is big, it takes months to cross the entire COP by faster than light travel (it's technically that, but the ship itself never goes faster than the speed of light), and that's only like 40,000 light years. Crossing 2 million light years would be a very long journey.

Our mission is to destroy the U.N.E. dogs, not to simply flee!! we would disgrace our very names by fleeing from these worms! Just the thought sickens me! And you cannot simple "invent something" what would happen if the U.N.E. got there hands on such technologies!? The war may even tip in their favor, i dare say!

I still think we should do more research and development into warp-space technology. And at least try to colonize another galaxy, even if it takes 10 years, we can have cryogenic freezing capsules that we sit inside until we reach the destination. Plus It would increase our empire beyond the milky way and we will one day rule the universe!

Here, I'll help.

Space is big. Really, really, really big.

You know how big you think it is? Well, that to the power of 10.

If you try to go anywhere in warpspace, even assuming you don't go off course somewhere along the way, and assuming your crews don't mutiny, you're going to be in the void between for thousands of years. Think less multigenerational colony ships and more multisocietal.

Secondly; warpspace doesn't work quite like the statement above says. There's a lot of navigational problems in there. The only way to avoid going wildly off course and ending up lord knows where is a system of automated transmission stations, the Warp Beacon Network.

Long, long ago those beacons went offline. The COP still hasn't recovered.

Without them, warpships just can't get around. Not safely, and certainly not in time to respond to events.

I believe they're anchored themselves by some kind of monthly transmission from the nearest planet. Not sure, that's Awe's job.

If you want to travel somewhere new, you've got a couple of options; you can just wildly jump and hope you come out near where you want to be, you can fire off a huge spread of probes and jump to the one that reports emerging from warpspace nearest to the destination, or you can send a colony ship via normalspace.

The last option is the safest and most economical, but takes a long, long time.

On the other hand, by the time you've got the new beacon set up, there's a nice, well developed colony world just waiting to be used as a beachhead for invading- I mean, liberating -nearby planets in system.

Presumably the old COP sent out a heap of them. Maybe in a few thousand years we'll even start getting reports back? Who knows.

Thank you Areetsa.

There's a reason the Great Crusades took 10,000 years to spread across the galaxy. The first few centuries of the COP were making the Warpspace Beacons and anchoring them to points in real space that correspond to where they are in Warpspace. Then they started installing uber-communications arrays so they can report to each other and communicate with beacons in real space, thus the term network.

These network had to be built up as the Crusades went a long. The biggest problem though, was the initial conquests of places outside the network, those would take decades to plan out and calculate, and then arrive.

When the network went down in a theoretical-Y2K style event, the ability to go places died with it. It took the next 7,000 years for the COP to regain roughly half it's old territories, and a great deal of that was spent looking for beacons.

Imagine searching a space with no stars for small, cold objects which could be anywhere. That's what the Re-Conquest mostly was, doing that, and turning on the Beacons one by one. Then they had to re-network them. And since Warpspace has no fixed landmarks that we know of, there is no way to make an accurate chart of it and a chart of where the Beacons are.

The best we can do is write down the general area of real space they correspond to. And even if you have that, what happens when they go down again? Fly without navigation to those areas? Good luck with that...

And that is why colonizing other galaxies is currently out of the question. Sure, you can make a chain of beacons, but it already takes months to go a couple ten thousand light years. Imagine the years it would take to go the millions in between galaxies. The rewards would be far outweighed by the costs.

Besides, there are still vast swathes of unsettled areas in the COP. It's like America in the 1800s. You have the East Coast (central worlds) and San Fransisco (Thyrenda). Everything else is like the everything in between, except who knows what the natives are like, if there are even natives.

Make that to the power of say... infinity? Space is HUGE!!!

Anyways, I thought I would just point out (obvious to some) that space can't really be displayed well on our map.
Why?
Because space happens to be in 3D, not the left/right thing we see on our maps, there could be a huge planet below Tarsis that nobody has even thought of.

Then there's other Universes... dimensions...

You could try looping something subtle in the background, or just altering the pitch here and there. Or not pronouncing certain sounds.

After all, speaking english with a lisp is technically speaking english. Whether it's a psychological lisp or a physical I-can't-make-that-sound lisp doesn't change that.
