Before you lock this topic or say it doesn't have anything to do with us, just hear me out. Now, there is a cool little program that you may have heard of that will let us talk to each other.

It's called 'Ventrilo.' It's most effective with a headset, but you can still use it with speakers and a microphone. I propose that one of us (prefferably an admin) take the time and money to create a server for the COP, and the rest of us can download it. That way, we can talk to each other without worrying about censors, spam, or scrolling down.

It'd be kind of nice to hear each others voices, and if we have any unreasonables, the server admin can just kick them or move them to a different area of the chat room.

They're like phone calls but over the internet and you can do group calls, though I think international calls require money.

With Ventrilo, or "Vent," as it's called, the only money that has to be paid is by the server owner, who has to pay a low monthly fee.

Besides that, the server can be accessed anytime by whoever has the port number for free.

Actually, if I can talk my dad into it, I can give you guys his vent info, and nobody has to spend any money, since it's free to download.

I knew you were going to say that. For once I'm glad you didn't make me an Admin. I'm not one to go out paying for people to talk to each other. But hey if anyone else here wants to volunteer, go right ahead, (with Awe's approval of course).

I'm not sure you understand. My microphone is down by my hard drive, to talk in to it, I have to either lean way over to talk into it, or lift up the computer to talk into it. Even then, it's gonna be really static-y.

However, as the secret leader of the Church, everyone was once under my command, so... yea...

Yeah, except raising taxes isn't going to help, it's a little more complicated than that. I know about 0.001% of what there is to know about politics, but I'm pretty sure raising taxes would put many more citizens in debt, that they can't pay off, and everybody would be careful with money and not spend much, therefore decreasing the consumer industry, and ruining the economy.

So, therefore, I either A) Move my business to another country, taking jobs with me, B) I cut a ton of workers, therefore leaving many unemployed, which doesn't help the economy. Then those unemployed have higher taxes to deal with, which means less money is spent fluctuating in the economic system. You see where I'm going with it?

-Withdraw all troops across the world
-Keep the missile defense screen up
-Decrease the active military
-Cut all unnecessary spending
-Cut most worker's benefits, to cheapen America's labor so we can get our jobs back from India, Mexico, and China
-Give corporations incentive to stay based in America with tax cuts to them for using American labor
-Withdraw from NAFTA, raise the tariffs again
-Clean up the immigration system so it's easier to get in
-Create jobs by launching new development projects, like building new dams and stuff
-Desecrate the landscape in our search for oil, despite the enormous amounts electricity we can produce and use
-Ban all foreign cars

You know, we didn't need a big military when we were isolationist. We should go back to those days, we had top hats back then. And steam ships.

Those were the days. *Sigh*. We just lined up and shot at each other with muskets that could barely hit the broadside of a barn. Oh, and the bright felt uniforms. *Sigh*. Wish I was there. Better days. Or Ancient Greece. Smarter, cooler, more awesome then America. They were discovering the Atom around 500 B.C., figuring out the circumference of the Earth almost exactly. They had it a bit bigger but still. Then the Dark Ages and Christianity came along and ruined it all. No offense to any Christians, just when the Church took over and all, it was their word and their word only, thus any science was then not true.

Actually, this is RONG. R O N G

The Church was the only thing that kept science alive in the Medieval times, thanks to it's scholars, monasteries, and stabilizing effect. Ever heard of Thomas Aquinas, one of the 33(32?) Doctors of the Church?

It was the barbarians invasions that destroyed science, Huns, Goths, Bulgars, Slavs, Magyars, all them. They become functioning members of society eventually though. The Church, as I said, was the only thing that prevented the loss of Western science. However, the Eastern Roman Empire and the Caliphate were much better at science than the Catholics. The influx of Greek and Muslim knowledge is what catapulted the Renaissance, you know. Where do you think we know about all those Greek legends, plays, literature, and inventions from? The Eastern Roman Empire and the Caliphate. They preserved most of classical knowledge for us today.

Imagine the irony that the great majority of students today don't even know this stuff. It's my personal crusade to make these contributions known to society.

I'm just going to respond in short here, session timed out, had a long response. Church preserved BARE MINIMUM. Arabs and Asians preserved it much more. Greeks smarter then us. Discovered Atom in 500 B.C. Found the approximate circumference of the Earth. Church said Earth was flat, center of universe ETC.
You are speaking to a Future Archeologist/Historian so that is Ironic. I have nothing against the Church/Christians, just a totalitarian attitude some have. The Bible needs to be classed as Mythology, could all be fake. I'll type out my other response when I have time.

The Church preserved much more than would have been preserved had it not been there, and did advance scientific knowledge as much as medieval Europe could. They began to fail at it during the Renaissance (put got some great art), but that's another era.

And I don't care if you're a future archaeologist/historian, because you are only a future one. Which means absolutely nothing to me unless you're graduation college in the next year or two. I have no doubt you're younger than me, and I'm nowhere close to getting a degree in anything, therefore, you cannot be closer to getting your degree in history than I am. @ your comment:

I never said the Church started modern science, I'm saying that they preserved what they could of it. What of my point that without the monasteries and documenting of the Vatican, there wouldn't have been anything left of science in the West at all? Since you're a historian too, apparently, surely you know of the massive strife and political instability Europe was going through from the fall of Rome to Charlemagne.

Who cares if a historian belongs to no country, I don't belong to any country either. I'm a Junior in high school, taking fancy-pants AP US history that all the over-achiever white kids take (unlike them, I'm not in every other AP class though).

It makes you closer in the sense that you're more prepared, but when it comes down to it, neither of us are getting degrees any time soon. Mentally, you might, maybe, be prepared. Academically, not even close. I sit around and absorb information to, that won't help me one bit. There's one thing colleges care about: money. Oh, and those worthless wastes of time called SATs.
Who are these Daughters of the Revolution anyway? Sounds like some sort of feminist group. >.>

My plan for world domination involves becoming and old Republican and leading a sneak attack against liberal, peace-loving boneheads, and then breaking out the cleansing bag. It's a messed up world, and I just need to rule it.

It's actually EVERYTHING. What you are saying is that Christians preserved science in the Dark Ages. The exact reason that page is there (not you specifically). They did absolutely NOTHING. Ever hear of the Archemidies Codex? Well, it was scratched over by monks to write a Hymn. It was the Asians and Middle Easterners. There was a gap in scientific progress left by the Church in the Dark ages and beyond. When the Church lost its power (Separation of Church and State) in the 18th and 19th centuries, scientific discoveries EXPLODED. Why? The road block was no longer there...

If they did nothing, how is it that western Europe even had a basis of science to build the Renaissance from? True, I admit that they did great harm to science as well (see the burning of the Library of Alexandria). Asians and Middle Easterners were up to their own things, it was the Greeks that preserved the most. When Constantinople went down in 1453, all that classical knowledge arrived in Italy, and you know what happened then.

And didn't science explode in the 1400s/1500s? That pesky Church was still around then.

I will explain in my rebuttals.

Quoting Awesome-o-saurus The Not-So-Great
True, I admit that they did great harm to science as well (see the burning of the Library of Alexandria).

It isn't fully known if the Christians burned down the entire thing or if it burned at all. It is know that a section burned near the docks, thought to have been caused by some of Cesar's troops or some Christians.

Quoting Awesome-o-saurus The Not-So-Great
Asians and Middle Easterners were up to their own things,...

Yes they were, which is my point about them. They didn't meddle with the affairs with the Christian Church as much as they could, but there were the Crusades and other things that prevented it fully. The Asians wanted no part, which probably helped them in the long run.

Quoting Awesome-o-saurus The Not-So-Great
...it was the Greeks that preserved the most. When Constantinople went down in 1453, all that classical knowledge arrived in Italy, and you know what happened then.

The Greeks were no longer a world power then. They had fallen to the Romans. The Greeks had established colonies on Italy, there was another people there (Not the Romans). The Romans later attacked and took over the Greek City States. Here is a good map of ancient Greece: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/AntikeGriechen1.jpg
Heck, they were never even a unified Empire. The base language kept them together, along with their religion, and other stuff that was awesome about them.

Quoting Awesome-o-saurus The Not-So-Great
And didn't science explode in the 1400s/1500s? That pesky Church was still around then.

What do you think the Plague did to the Church's reputation after it couldn't stop it? It started tarnishing it. They were still in power but, they had weakened, power slowly slipping out of their hands. People wouldn't take it anymore. And that wasn't really in science, mainly Music, Art, government, and wealth. The few scientists of the time were scoffed, Galileo for instance was under house arrest...

And riddle me this. Name 5 things that the Cristian Church did to protect science, through all history.

Once again, I have nothing against the Christians, just the lies people try to pass off as truth. It makes me irate.

It was the Christians who took out Alexandria's library. Something about the book of the dead being too spoooky for them to handle. Caesar's troops never burned it. Julius didn't even go to Egypt, and Augustus just sort of took it over.

It's ironic that early Islam was so liberal with science and philosophy. But yes, the Muslims, Indians, Chinese, and more all didn't have anything blocking their sciences. After the Reconquest in Spain, what knowledge wasn't lost was translated into Latin and other languages, also fueling the Renaissance, which led to the Enlightenment (wish I was around then, such an optimistic time).

Dude, I know my classical history. I'm not ignorant. By Greeks I mean the Eastern Roman Empire. I refuse to call them by the name the German pretenders gave them. Surely, you know of these guys? I mean, they kept the Arabs and Turks at bay for 800 years, and preserved just about everything we know of classical literature. When Constantinople fell to the Ottomans, there was a massive influx of Greek (Roman) scholars into the West.

Not every scientist was scoffed by the Church. Again, I reference Thomas Aquinas, though not an actual scientist, he was very influential in the philosophy/theology scene. But wait, I know your response: He's just one guy and helped back up the Church's doctrines, or something like that. Galileo, Copernicus, yes, they were all shut down.

5 things the Church did:
-Recorded literature and preserved it in archives and monasteries
-was a stable entity in turbulent times, allowing at least some degree of learning to go on

Well, that's two. If there was no Church, all of Western learning would have been lost to obscurity, time, or strife. Two is better than zero, that's what I told my math teacher when I failed my test last month.

Quoting Matthew Novosad
Once again, I have nothing against the Christians, just the lies people try to pass off as truth. It makes me irate.

The world is not black and white. Outside of mathematics, you will never find absolute truth. Have you considered the possibility that the answer to this debate lies in that grey realm everyone is so afraid of?
