I'll admit, there's stuff in here even I don't get, but this was written by a legit scientist, so you can take his word on it. In fact, I'd suggest reading all the war-related things on the site. It'll explain a lot about the way we (me and the mostly-realists) do things.

Discuss and question, I'm like the cool science teacher who doesn't really teach that you'll never have.

Ok, if we ever attacked earth, we'd have to warpspace in between the sun and earth, using the sun's heat to disguise our heat signatures, then probably send a ton of decoys to the side away from the line between the sun and earth so that they drew a lot of fire (if the UNE are that st00p1d) then send a single antimatter missile streaking towards earth at 9% the speed of light. The earth would be eliminated and the moon knocked out of orbit :P

A sound plan, but we want Earth alive and unspoiled. As much as we can get, at least. 6 billion people is not an insignificant population.

When I was younger it was 5 billion, and I think now it's about 6.8 billion, so probably a fair bit more people in the 23rd century, not including those billions who have colonized planets and man ships... @ your other comment, why do we need earth alive?

Huge fireballs are, by themselves, intrinsically awesome. On the practical side, there's nothing better for removing inconvenient surface targets, and they're relatively cheap to build, deploy and clean up after compared to comparable biological and chemical weapons.

Your argument is invalid.

Why don't you shoot a massive EMP to take out that ringy thing the UNE have then land the ground forces on every major city in the world then slowly weed out the army, navy, and air force that's remaining. That way we have the whole world in our hands!(Sorry about that song)

Because it wouldn't work. An EMP big enough to take out the whole ring would probably effect us or be shot down before it detonated. Smaller EMPs (Nukes give off EMP in high atmosphere, not sure about no atmosphere though) could do the trick, but it is possible to harden your electronics against EMP.

And nuking is cowardly and ll00bish because....? You just go around saying n0bish things without even the courtesy of backing them up with a reason. Therefore your arguments are invalid, and you are a n0b. If the COP want to destroy something big, like a ship or fortified planet, rather than pointlessly risk the lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, we simply bomb it. Simple solution.

Nuking is only allowed if the body toll is higher than a million.(Thus WWII.) And I thought the COP doesn't care about lives.

Now this, is correct. Billions matter to us, and hundreds of millions. Tens of millions die on average in skirmishes though, given the technology of war.

Yes so nuking a world that may only cause a few hundred thousand deaths does not deserve a good nuking.

A few hundred thousand can be sacrificed. A few million can too. But any higher, and fallout is less of a cost.

Let's not so much end this argument, put it on hold until you can explain to me why it's cowardly and n0bish to use nukes in large scale warfare, or until you admit your point is invalid.

I'm really not in good mood to discuss, but let's go. Nukes not only kills a flabbergasting number of innocent people, but leaves the area contaminated and inhabitable. Plus, military speaking, it spoils eletric devices, as it erradiates electromagentic pulse. This is obviously uninteligent, 'cuz you may need such devices, and you can have it without killing about 200 thousand innocent people and leaving the area contaminated for years and years.
If you're thinking on come ranting on me about casualties, I shall present that killing innocent people is sickness. Also keep in mind that our world is freaked up because people want to be smarter than anyone else. If you have respect for the person next to you, maybe, just maybe, we can have a better world.

-Nukes can kill innocents, that is true. However, why would any innocents wander into a space battle?
-EMP can be negated by shielding your electronics. It is possible, therefore, it is of no concern. You can just turn your stuff off beforehand, and then re-activate after it's over. Furthermore, nukes in the lower atmosphere do not cause EMP.
-200,000? Where'd this come from? Are you make a subtle bash on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? I'll have you know that instead of a few hundred thousand dieing, millions of Americans and Japanese would have been killed in an invasion, plus the ensuing destruction that war causes.
-Killing innocent people is no good. But would you rather kill a million innocents with one nuke, or have tens of millions die from going in a more conventional way? In the COP, such choices are frequent. The lesser of two evils, if you will.
-How does people wanting to be smarter than other people make this world worse? It's called innovation and progress.
-Respect is earned, not given, for me. Everyone starts with a bit, but some loose it (Michael Q), and some gain more (Phaze).

On the rest of the discussion, what's simpler and quicker? A tremendously destructive invasion, followed by a long, drawn out guerilla campaign, or http://www.flickr.com/photos/areetsa/5042439363/?

Nuking is only allowed if the body toll is higher than a million.(Thus WWII.)

Nuking is a tool for rapidly ending conflicts before they escalate, on the insterstellar scale. A war that is suppressed normally, inside an organization like the Coalition, just breeds dissent. Which do you think people remember better, a long drawn out conflict wherin armed soldiers shoot everything that moves because the guerillas have broken every rule in the Laws Of War, or a quick bombing that wipes out a belligerent nation and messes up the climate for a few years?

Think of it as situational morality; both options aren't very nice, but you have no choice but to choose between them.

And frankly, if you take the time to fight an insurgency on a minor world deep inside your own lines during a war, you're a world class twit. War is a time for quick, simple solutions that take a minimum of manpower to employ.

In case you can't tell, when it comes to insurgencies and other such unconventional wars, I'm a big fan of http://bit.ly/180tli.

•Me and Danny are discussing about nuking a planet. Innocent people live on planets.
if you will.

•I don't know about you US guys, but at least here on Brazil, people are trained since childhood to become dishonest people when they grow up. That's why our politicians are as they are. "What does this have to do with 'people wanting to be smarter than other peolpe'?", you may say. Simple, my friend, they do not want to be "honest guys" when they can have all public money in their pockets. Did you get it?

-Not everyone down there is innocent. But, we'd nuke the military sites first, and then wherever resistance happens to be. Everyone else will get to watch their cities dismantled, because the COP doesn't approve of most Earth cities. They're enabling to hiding and criminal activity, and not to mention disease.

-Ah, I see. We're only trained to be dishonest when people get into public office. Otherwise, you're trained to just be plain dumb, easy targeting for who really rules the USA.

1. Is a -Mass aceleration/friction shield or field- the basics are that when an object hits this, 'Field projected, it is accelarated at increasing speed far faster than it's orginal velocity. Now alone, that wouldn't do much, however when this object is accelerated and counted by gravity it causes enourmos friction on the mass causing to heat up, melt, and then vaporize. So in short, a mass hits the field, speeds up, reacts with frictions, heats, melts, then turns to vapor. pretty much allowing this field to neutralize any projectile used against it.

2. Was a sort of bomb, once again dealing with mass. but this time it focuses on using it's momentum against the mass to gain power. So it's shot at a mass, the resulting energy of motion fuels it causes it to grow, hitting other masses aroung it increasing in power, capable of oblitherating a close group of masses, (such as a fleet) with just this one bomb. Anyways, something to think about, I just wanted to introduce it to see if it was exceptable.

1- I like the idea, but we have rules against all kinds of shields except magnetic ones.

2- You basically described a standard kinetic energy weapon, except one that somehow grows in size. I'm not sure how possible that is.

There's no point. I'm pretty sure that an object moving at around 3/4 kilometres per second has a kinetic impact equivalant to its own weight in TNT.

Yes, but nuke>TNT.

When you're talking about 3 kilometer long MAPD uber cannons, a nuke built into the slug would make very little difference to the ship it's hitting. Cause about the same amount of damage I'd say, whether or not it has an explosive warhead.

I'm thinking standard ship-to-ship railguns and coilguns.

You don't understand, these ARE ship to ship cannons. You know those 2X2 stud depressions in the front of many coalition ships (and all four of mine)? Those are the blast/meteorite-and-other-space-debris protection doors beneath which is the nozzle of an uber MAPD cannon, mainly for obliterating enemy ships.

Quoting Spaztastic the Diabolical
Yeah, I know. I meant the standard, run-of-the-mill cannons that line the sides of Harbringers n stuff.

Oh, eh, no idea, they're just small (compared to the central MAPD) rail guns on the side, I don't think they'd carry nukes, that'd be too powerful because I think they're just meant for putting holes in frigates and shattering fighters/dropships/shuttles. And anyway, it would kinda be unfair if the COP had 30+ nuke rail guns for space battles in the 23rd Century Universe.

Finally, activity! And to get rid of Earth, you must wipe out China, that'll get rid of almost half the population and know that France will surrender. This could be successful... if we use stealth and look to not be detected by anything heat seeking. And avoid large ships when nearing the planet.
