Right! His name was Denethor, I had forgotten. I can't say that I don't like him, if Tolkien was talented enough to pull those emotions from me with his writing, but he isn't a nice fellow. And I always feel sorry for Faramir. I'm glad my Father never played favorite with my brothers and I.

does any one like arwen? she annoys me,

I love Arwen. No - really! Besides the action, suspense, drama, excitement, and other wonderful reasons to watch the motion picture trilogy, I also watch all three films just for Arwen. I adored Liv Tyler's amazing performance, and really, I didn't mind her screen-time removing some other book featured characters. So no, I like Arwen a lot. (But if you’re talking about the book character... Dude, her appearance had less than a page in both “The Fellowship of The Ring” and “Return of The King” put together!) I mean... Arwen! *swoon*

NOOOOO! Please don't cry!!! Sometimes she annoyed me, but now I see, which great job she did. (When I was younger I didn't like the Arwen scenes, because nothing exciting happened, but now I don't hate them anymore, because she played her part better and with more emotions than other guys) I've just seen the first movie (again) and when the first Arwen-scene came I remembered Caleb's opinion. ..... Nah - you guys are all entitled to have your own opinions. And while I may not share you opinions, I do like to hear what every one of the members in this group has to say. We all think differently, and it surely makes the group all the more exciting and interesting. I may have truly enjoyed Liv Tyler's performance as Arwen and love watching how well Arwen's character was acted upon and portrayed in the films, but that doesn't mean you all have to agree with me. Thanks for the kind words, though, Michael. (And for the record, I was never crying. That was a simple joke. ;) )

REALLY???

Hmmm... a different opinion....
I think Peter Jackson himself wanted Faramir to be a very likable character in his movie, but everyone has his own opinion ....

I for the example... don't like Denethor, but I can understand his way to think very good: He's only an embittered old man, who thinks wrong about his son Faramir and became mad because of the death of his favorite son.

(Did you know this?:In the book he became mad while looking into a palantir)

Personally, I really don't care that Lurtz killed Boromir. Boromir just kind of had an un-trustworthy and evil side to him. I know he fought valiantly and saved Merry and Pippin and all. But still, he's just not my favorite. Who tried to take the Ring from Frodo?

I completely disagree, I simply do not understand how anyone likes the Uruk Hai, orcs, or goblins at all. Regardless of who they kill or what they do: THEY ARE EVIL. They are not supposed to be liked. When people ask me 'Who is your favorite bad guy in LOTR' I tell them 'Gollum' this is because there are 4 types of bad guys:

1. The bad guys who are funny.
most people like it when someone evil is humorous even though he is evil. (This includes characters such as Gollum)

2. Bad guys who are extremely powerful or have a sleek, graceful yet very different style of fighting the the ordinary rabble., but honorable (To some extent) and are in turn respected for their power or intelligence or style of fighting, (Such as The Witch king, Sauron in full form, Easterlings, (for style) wargs, and Balrogs.)

3. The bad guys who have a hope for redemption, who are not yet completely evil. They are liked because there is always hope for them, and people hope that by the end of the story they will be on the good side. (Gollum and Grima both fit here)

4. Then lastly there are the bad guys who nobody should like (even though some people do) because they are simply evil, have no hope for redemption and are not even funny, nor are they super powerful so there is nothing about them to be liked. (People such as Lurtz, and any of the goblins/orcs/uruk hai, and any other mindless minion of Saruman or Sauron)

In short characters who are funny are like, and maybe rightly so, characters who are powerful, fast, smart, or sleek, are respected, and 'liked' in a way, characters who have hope are hoped for and liked because of the chance for redemption, and characters who do not fit these categories should be disliked and spurned because of the evil that resides in them, with nothing to compensate for it.

Smaug is my favorite evil character. It's sad that there aren't any other dragons that play a bigger role in the 3rd age.

I completely agree with you! The only bad guys I "like" are mostly from category 2 or 3.

Smaug is my favorite evil character. It's sad that there aren't any other dragons that play a bigger role in the 3rd age.

Smaug is definitely one of the best characters in LOTR!

Agreed. Who could even like a Uruk-Hai? They're ugly as heck.

Personally, I really don't care that Lurtz killed Boromir. Boromir just kind of had an un-trustworthy and evil side to him. I know he fought valiantly and saved Merry and Pippin and all. But still, he's just not my favorite. Who tried to take the Ring from Frodo?
Well, technically it was the ring that corrupted him anyways, but that actor looks evil anyways. Sort o like a cr33per

BARZULN! There are a LOT of comments in here already lol.

I do not hate Denethor; his mind was twisted like Saruman's was and he is wracked with grief and embittered about the world at the loss of his first-born so the sight of his under-achieved younger son angers him.

ELROND IS AWESOME!!!

Arwen is one of my favorite characters as far as acting and entertainment are concerned and she's very beautiful (but pales compared to Evangeline Lilly). I don't see how anyone could dislike her.

Boromir is also one of my favorite characters. He has a lot of depth and is torn between his vow to protect the ring and his desire to please his father but most of what drove him to attempt stealing the ring was the state that Gondor was in - dilapidated and sad with the threat of Mordor next door and no king. He befriended Merry and Pippin who were trusting unlike Frodo and Sam and he valiantly died protecting them.

Sooooo, who do I hate?

Gollum.

The Gollum side of him is great but Smeagol annoys the heck out of me. His performance in the Hobbit film was great, however, but I dislike his appearance. I always envisioned him as being more froggish with large pale eyes that glowed in the dark.

I also dislike Legolas. I know, I know; bring the fan-boy rants lol.

I dislike Shelob personally, but it's mainly because of my arachnophobia. Spiders just scare me and creep me out, alot.

Haha, spiders in movies kind of creep me out, especially since I personally know someone who have seen spiders as big as by gut. D: but I get really freaked out in real life - mainly if it's on my arm, or body.

My least favorite character? That would be Frodo. I know he was corrupted by the ring, but still, he was NOT the hero at ALL. It was Samwise Gamgee. I like Lurtz, Denethor, Arwen, and Grima. I don't like Elrond. Check his eyebrows... I like Radagast. SEBASTIAN! the hedgehog from the movie. Can't stand Saruman. In LEGO LotR in the first level, Sauron is oversized. I like Sauron, but not in that game. My favorite is Gollum. I have a question, too. For Gollum, when he talks to himself, is the "good side" Smeagol, and the "evil side" Gollum? Or is it vice versa?

Have you read the book? If no you'll have too! Frodo in book is more lovable character and you are able to understand him. I love Frodo as well as Sam, Merry, Pippin and all merry hobbits :) Except of Lotho and Ted Sandyman...

I agree. I think Sam is the only hobbit that is presented quite close to the books. Merry is supposed to be the one with the most plans and ideas in the books, but you can't see anything of that in the movie.

As for positive aspects, I like the movie versions of Aragorn and Boromir much better than Tolkien's. They are more likeable, because they show human doubts, strengths and weaknesses.

Yes, the "evil" side is Gollum and the "good" side Smeagol, because that was Gollum's old name, when he was once a hobbit.

I agree. In movie Merry is to similar to Pippin, they're both silly. In book Pippin was a bit silly, because he was the youngest (actually it's really funny when Gandalf answers him in a impolite way). But Merry in book was an adult and quite mature hobbit.

I have read them. Tolkien did this on purpose because he saw that in WW1, the foot soliders were better than the generals. During WW1, Tolkien made a sculpture of Sam.

Though his views were wrong it wasn't Boromir's fault that they were wrong it was the temptation of the One Ring the same thing happened to Isildur, Gollum(Smeagol at the time), and after Gollum the temptation got to Bilbo so it was the Ring the whole time.

Whenever people hate on Boromir, I give them this response.

Boromir wanted to save Gondor. That was his original intention. But the ring drove him mad. And I'd like to ask...
Do you think you could have done better? No, I think there are very few humans who could resist the power of the ring. Plus, he came back out of his madness and renewed himself by fighting for Merry and Pippin.

Good point... I agree he was a very courageous man who cared for Gondor and was going to use the ring for good... You really changed my view on him... Thanks!
