They're just choosing which members of the Fellowship they are because the nine Admins and MODs represent the Nine Walkers (Company of the Ring)

While I don't like the deviations from the book, AUJ is my favorite movie because it starts out very peaceful in the Shire. That's the main reason I like the Hobbit book; because the story is so much lighter.

Even PJ did make the Hobbit a much darker story than the book, it still starts out with a light story in the Shire.

The Lord of the Rings movies are so much better then the the Hobbit movies. In the Hobbit, almost everything looks "fake" or absurd. The Lord of the Rings gives you the feeling of being inside Middle-Earth.

You should know I am. I love the Norse myths, if you remember my saying so in the MOD group, Tolkien based his entire world off of Norse Myths.

For instance, the main world in the Norse myths is "Midgard" the terms elf, dwarf, troll, and goblin all come from the norse myths.

In short, yes I love the norse myths.

That's awesome!

At the moment I'm reading everything that has to do with Midgard and the other worlds!

Odin on his adventures in Midgard reminds me of Gandalf the Grey and the Fire Giants have some paralels to balrogs I think. And names like Gandalf, Durin and Dwalin are all from the Norse Myths too.

That's true, my friend showed me her Mythology text book she has inside it listed a whole bunch of the dwarves, some of their names were: Dain, Nain, Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Gandalf, Bali, Dwalin, Bifur, Bofu, Bombr, Dori, Nori, Ori, Thorin, Durin, Gimli, Fundin, and many others that we all recognize.

On what website(s) are you reading about it?

I was reading about it in two old books we have. One is about poems and was originally written in Icelandic and the other one is about almost all Norse Myths and old German Tales that exist.

I think I know that book too. I'm now almost done with both books I have about Norse Mythology, so I will then start reading Greek Myths. I already know a lot about it, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it!

Hey guys, I know I haven't been active for a couple of months. I got a new puppy last September and he has taken up most of my time. I have also been really busy with school and many other problems that come along with being a teenager. Anyway, I don't think I will be posting any Mocs anytime soon but I hope I can be more active in the conversations and other topics in our group.

I think you should add as many of them as possible! You are a great builder, so it will be easier for you and people who love your MOCs to find them. Also when they visit your homepage, they'll see more creations and that means more comments for you and possible conversations and friends.

Yeah true. I really wish they had included the Scouring of the Shire and Saruman could have died properly like the book. Also not even a small appearance of Tom Bombadil? They could have given him ten minutes like Beorn :P

PJ during FotR: Hmm... Let's cut out Tom Bombadil... Everybody loves him and he has a whole other book written about him, so I think it's a good decision.
PJ during Hobbit: Hmm... I think I'll stretch this out into two movies... Heck, make it three and throw in a villain. A creepy looking one.

PJ During Hobbit 2 and 3: WHAT?!? You want to save money by actually making real prosthetic and sets? Are you nuts?!?! Buy an expensive program that was used to make video games or something... I think a few hundred hours to make fake scenes and weapons and characters sounds cool..

OH and let's add Legolas and a a Captain of the guard who wasn't in a book.... OH and have her fall in love with a dwarf and give them a cheesy love scene... OH and let's not give Bombur any lines, I think he had too many of those in the book.

OH and also make Thranduil be a total diva, and give him a weird disease that I made up that makes his face melt off... Yeah that sound epic, dontcha think?

They really had that many changes? Now I am not an avid fan of the The Hobbit book but, c'mon... Peter Jackson as a talented director should really know better than inserting in new plot points that don't really go anywhere. But maybe it's not just Peter Jackson's fault.. a lot of it may bend toward's the studio's involvement. But someone or a group of someones is to blame, nonetheless. :P

I think DOS is slightly better than AUJ, but not much. They are both very different movies. LOTR is still unbeatable, I mean during every second scene there was a wow-effect.

Definitely on LOTR. The best thing in any of the Movies so far has been Smaug, for sure but they butchered the story too much with DOS (why did they leave the Dwarves in Lake-town?!?) and it was way too fast. On the other hand, AUJ was REALLY slow and could have benefited from a quicker pace.

I digress, however. and will leave it there...for now.

I think Peter Jackson is a great director and he did a wonderful job on all the movies but he just added too much to the Hobbit films that take away from the story of the book we all know and love.

While your idea sounds interesting, I don't think it will work very well. There are already many groups like LOM and the truth is, unless you're a very popular builder people aren't going to be active in your groups. I know this from experience.

there are plenty of people my age around where I live. Ian Spacek for one is a very good friend of mine. I go to a co-op for homeschoolers where we take classes and get do things like dissections in science and stuff that would be difficult to do at home. As for having no friends a lot of the home-schoolers that I've met are... Um.... Weird. It's hard to carry a normal conversation. I do have a lot of "normal" (as in sociable, wants to do stuff, can take/tell a joke, ect.) friends I've met, but (save a few) they all live a long bit away from me.

55 dollars? Wow, that's quite expensive. Can't you get them in the Netherlands? Or is LEGO too rare there?

That's the least expensive way to get them in the Netherlands. How do you get your legos in Germany?

I order them from the official German lego shop and then it comes within 2 days, or I drive to the next town and buy them there.

Well, once again I'd like to apoligize for my inactivity lately, I've been VERY busy with school and other things, AND my basement where I keep my Lego recently flooded, so it was innacessible for a while too... However, It is back in shape now, so that's good :) I recently got a new laptop, which is what I'm typing from now, so I will hopefully be on more. Anyway, my apologies again, hope to see you soon!

You mean, you don't have that test in the US??

Lucky you!

It is really awful. You have to learn everything you did in the last two years, but you still don't know what of it you'll need for the A-levels (or Abitur, that's how we call it in Germany)

You earn an accumulative grade over your four years of high school through all of the classes that you take. That final grade is called your final GPA (grade point average).

How did you manage getting your huge lego collection into the new house?

Funny you should ask.

Fortunately the new house is close to ours, so I just loaded my legos, very carefully into my tiny little car, and drove very carefully to the new house and brought them all in a few at a time. I did pack up some of the sturdier ones, but let me tell you, moving Orthanc, the Sandcrawler, the Millenium Falcon, and Helms Deep, was no easy task.

So, after a few months of sports and student gov. I've reevaluated my personal life, and decided I haven't been taking enough time for myself to do things i enjoy (reading, drawing, legos). So, I decided to take more time for myself. SO (i use that two letter word too much), expect a new MOC every Thursday or Saturday, and as active as I can be on this group!

THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG MOVIE REVIEW

Now that the DoS dvd is released and I have re-watched it my memory of the film is revived, and I can now write a review on the whole thing.

First off, the thing that most bothered me was the action scenes and CGI effects. In fact, it seemed to me that those were what half of the movie was about. Just about every scene was made up of 75% CGI and 25% tangible sets, whereas in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, everything looked real, because 90% actually was. Remember Helm's Deep, that was all real! It was actually built, though most likely not to the scale seen in the film.

Now about the action. In An Unexpected Journey, there was a lot of gravity going on. Dwarves nearly falling off mountains, more dwarves falling off wooden structures (and not dying, even after getting crushed by a gargantuan goblin), and even more dwarves dangling off tree branches. The problem with Desolation of Smaug is that everyone seems to be defying gravity. Legolas suddenly turns into a ballerina and balances tip-toed on a dwarf's head while shooting unlimited CG arrows into masses of orcs, and Bombur (the fattest dwarf) is seen bouncing 10-20 feet into the air in a barrel. Also, the only two times people have gotten hurt are when Thorin got owned by Azog and Kili got shot, across both movies. The Hobbit just turned from a movie into a videogame. Even with these major flaws, the action scenes are still pretty enjoyable to watch. To add to the videogame aspect, the scenes where the dwarves are fighting Saug are just ridiculous. Smaug just can't seem to hit anything, and Bilbo and the dwarves are just pulling levers and chains and chucking dwarf grenades. Thorin even rode a wheel barrow in freshly melted molten gold that would definitely heat up the wheel barrow and sizzle him. Ugh.

Now, about the story. Personally, I don't think the inclusion of Sauron doesn't fit at all. Gandalf is seen investigating the necromancer and ringwraiths, eventually coming across Sauron at the end. But in Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf is just happily smoking and partying. But then he comes across the ring and remembers Sauron. When you put it alltogether (Gandalf finds out Sauron is the necromancer and finds out middle earth is threatened ---> [insert There and Back Again events] --> Gandalf is partying and smoking
--> Gandalf finds out about the ring and Sauron and that middle earth is threatened), it DOES NOT make sense.

Now onto Thorin. In the movie, he's shown as growing more selfish as he begins to care more for the Arkenstone than the dwarves and Bilbo. In the book, he wasn't as much, but he still cared for the other dwarves and Bilbo. Personally, I think he was given to much backstory, giving a Bilbo less time to be the main character. In fact, a lot of people were given to much backstory and such. Probably 10% of the movie is about Bilbo.

The movie should be called, 13 Dwarves, a Dragon, Some Elves, Two Wizards, A Lot of Orcs, a Few Men, and a Hobbit: The Desolation of Tolkien.

Also, the inclusion of Azog was not a good idea. In the book, he died. Now in the movies, he only lost his arm and is under the servitude of Sauron. Peter Jackson is going way to far. Good thing Tolkien will never know. The whole revenge against Thorn story arc is also ridiculous. He killed Thorin's dad or grandpa or whatever and he only lost your arm and got a better metal one that he could stab people with, I think he's more than even! And, he's got a kid (Bolg)??! What is this??!?

I have also included unnecessary points in the movie that has not been said above.
- the political or governmental problems or whatever going in Laketown
- probably the love triangle?
- the beginning Bree scene (We already know what's happening!!), it just adds some extra fat to the movie
- the giant crossbow thing that shoots giant black ”arrows“ (spears?!). It takes away Bard's identity as Bard the Bowman, now he's just Bard.

Well, that's my review for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (Tolkein?!), a movie you will initially love, but will ultimately disappoint you, when you really think about it.

THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG MOVIE REVIEW

Thank you for the review, Stephen!
I agree about many things, the LOTR movies just looked more real, in the Hobbit they had too many bad CGI animations. Of course costumes and real places are a lot of work, but it's worth the effort and doesn't look unrealistic. The video-game-like scenes are also a very unneccessary aspect in my opinion, although I can understand that Jackson only made them to put more tention into the whole movie, which is really hard, because the Hobbit is a children's book where nobody is hurt. As for the lovestory, I think it doesn't fit LOTR, but I still liked it and it seemed to fullfill a missing aspect of the book since it is neither about love at all nor there are any women. The worst thing in my opinion was orcs and wargs in lake-town, I mean, seriously??? And Bolg fighting Legolas???

THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG MOVIE REVIEW

Well, from the sound of it, you really don't like DoS. :P I do agree with you in a lot of things. But if you've read a bunch of Middle Earth books (I've read a decent amount), some of the parts in the movie aren't too bad.
-In the book, Thorin does become greedy for the Arkenstone and nearly throws Bilbo off a wall in Erebor when he finds out that Bilbo gave the Arkenstone away (proof that he sorta went crazy)
-In the book the Master of Lake Town is kinda goofy (Not saying he's evil and wants to imprison Bard, but he really only cares for himself.). He does run away with a lot of treasure in the end (I think). True I don't like him in the movie, but they did capture a little bit of his character.
-Bolg was (I believe) Azog's son.
-Azog didn't die so quickly. He ruled Moria for quite some time. He also chopped up Thror.
-During the Hobbit Sauron was returning.
-When Gandalf leaves the dwarves in the Hobbit he does go "exploring" (if I may use the word).
*The 2 points below are found in the Silmarillion
-The White Council does take place
-Gandalf does search Dul Guldor and finds Sauron (see the Council of Elrond chapter).

As a side note: The "love triangle" was interesting (as you said). I didn't like the whole Kili and Tauriel thing but the love between Tauriel and Legolas I didn't mind so much. Though it's not mentioned in the book, Legolas could very well have had a girl.
And, as Michael said, the orcs in Lake Town part wasn't so good. Defiantly not my favorite scene. For once I have no explanation for it. :(

All in all, DoS wasn't as good as I had hoped. But hopefully by reading this you'll understand it a little more. :D

Yes, although they added a lot of new stuff to the plot, they used still some interesting facts from the books, even if they weren't in the Hobbit.

The Bree scene, where Gandalf and Thorin met the first time, for instance really happened and was mentioned in several of Tolkien's other tales.

Also Legolas lived to that time, so it is not crazy that he appeared in the movie (although I think his part is a big too big for my taste)

Yes, I am! It's awesome that they have a bigger role in the Hobbit.

I think the best alternative for what you are looking for is Lord of the Rings Online. It's the best Middle Earth game ever. It's very detailful and huge. So last week I went and bought the LEGO The Hobbit video game. Since I pre-ordered it I got a Bilbo in his robe minifigure which is really cool and detailed (his legs are dark red which is really sweet!). I think the Elrond with LotR was better though. One really cool new feature I love about this game is that you can summon a horse whenever you want to explore Middle-earth (after you've visited Beorn's house) and you can customize your horse! You can have two horses, two Wargs, and two ponies. I didn't do any Wargs or ponies but the horse customization is great! I hope this means good things for custom minifigures (the LEGO LotR customization was lacking).

Also I played the Barrels out of Bond level and unlocked Bombur when was in the barrel. He has two axes and spins around, destroying orcs. It's pretty awesome.

I was thinking about LOTRO, but I have a friend who plays it and he said Turbine does some "stupid stuff" for non-paying players, (Something like an early level cap, I think?) Not entirely sure. I was thinking about the upcoming Middle-Earth: Shadows of Mordor, until I saw that it seems like an Assassin's Creed rip-off in Middle-Earth. It doesn't even feel very Tolkien.

LOTRO does not have an early level cap. You can go wherever you want and get the the highest level possible while still being FTP. However there is a point where there are less quests available if you don't pay, but the main storyline is always free.
