I have been building for as long as I can remember.
I can recall pictures of my very young self with bricks in hand and a smile on my face. For 30+ years I have never strayed too far from the hobby, never experiencing a true dark age. Maybe a slightly dim age though, but never too dark. When I started working on larger-scale layouts, I would often flip between cityscapes and medieval scenes while slowly working on my own style of building.
Since helping start our local LUG in 2009, my building not only became more varied, but was also enhanced by working with others. I enjoy building layouts for shows as much as I do building my own creations, and those that I do for various online challenges.
Becoming a part of the larger community online and at cons further challenged me to build to the best of my ability, sometimes outside of my confort zone. Doing this, I believe, has been the best way to grow in the hobby.
I have a flickr stream as well: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sasklegousers/
