As far as my taste for models, I have three main categories I enjoy; Architecture, Firearms, and Vehicles.
In Architecture, the more detail the better! Structural rigidity matters little, and the design and detail are what make the model.
In Firearms, while detail is good, you shouldn't make a model so detailed that the second you pick it up it falls apart. Function over form! Ask yourself this: if it could fire real rounds, would you take It into action? If its a bright, multicolor gun that breaks as soon as you run with it, its time to take it back and keep working ;)
Vehicles should have moving wheels/tracks/propellers, but other than that its all realism.
