Shaddix asked for it...so here it is. We're stepping up to the measuring stick to display our collection for all to see.
About this creation
Mr. Shaddix asked for it, so Stacy and I are stepping up to the measuring stick to display our collection. It also was a good excuse to take some updated pictures of the LEGO Lair and to show how our collection is spilling over into other areas of our house. This picture is a panorama of the Lair that was stitched together from four pictures.
This second picture was the original LEGO workbench we built a couple of years back. The storage bins contain a variety of small parts in various colors. If we have more parts than will fit in the designated bin, the extras go into 'deep storage' usually in a box somewhere else in the basement. As you can see, it's a mess right now. I'm in the middle of preparing for a train show so things are a little chaotic at the moment.
This picture shows the end of Stacy's workbench which could be seen in the first photo. These are Plano totes (Stow-Aways I think) that house small parts, Minifig accessories, and anything we don't have too many of. On top of the workbench you can see some of Stacy's Spongebob Collection. She also keeps some of her favorite Harry Potter figs up there on a custom designed display thingy.
From there we move over to the heart of the Lair which is the Rubbermaid shelving that houses all the shoebox size totes full of miscellaneous LEGO. This is where we keep the bricks, plates, tiles, slopes, windows, doors, wheels, boat pieces, etc. Pretty much anything we have a lot of. It's sorted by part type/size, not color. Any parts that don't fit into their respective bin go into deep storage.
Here's the farthest shelf unit. More Plano totes, bins of glass, windows, etc. Trees, animals, and plants. A few other storage bins hold 4xN and 6xN plates. The lowest shelf has a few Stanley totes that have train stuff, fences, and panels. On the top of the the shelf there are a few more bins and some cargo ship hulls.
The middle shelf unit is an odd collection of stuff. Slopes, technic stuff, bricks, tiles, you name it...it's probably here. There are also 6 or so bins on the bottom shelf with 9V train track.
The left-most shelving unit. Mostly bricks and plates with a smattering of other odd stuff laying around.
Here's a few pictures showing some of our 'deep storage' and a bunch of unopened sets waiting to be cannibalized. We've got a TV down in the Lair so we can enjoy some movies while working down there. We're usually watching some fantasy movie, Star Wars, or cartoons. Never grow up...never...ever.
Our trusty Plano tackle box tote that goes with to all shows. Carries Minifigs and accessories very nicely. Behind it...more unopened sets from early-2009. Pirates, Power Miners, Castle, and some City stuff. I swear I'll get to them soon...or they'll get parted. Either way the bricks will be consumed.
Another shot of unopened sets. This is Star Wars stuff from this past Christmas. Still haven't got around to putting much of it together as I've been busy with the aforementioned train show preparation. I did manage to put the Republic Gunship together which is simply awesome. Did I mention I love the Asoka Minifig?
We'll take a small break from just random brick to look at the layout. It's ever-evolving and in a state of flux right now since we're preparing for the show in March. I'll post more pictures of it soon. Or you can just come and see it in person at Brickworld 2009.
Yep...you guessed it...more 'deep storage' and a few more unopened sets. I need to get to work on the Falcon soon. A project for late-summer I think. After the craziness of exhibiting is over for the year. Then I can devote some serious time to it. The three stacked boxes at the bottom of the picture are filled with more 9V track. A person can never have to much 9V stuff.
As I mentioned above, the collection has started to spill out from the Lair into the rest of the house. In our living room rests the new Death Star Playset proudly displayed for all who visit to see. It really gives the room a 'homey/comfy' feel.
We recently converted our guest bedroom to a reading room. We decided to add LEGO as decorations in that room as well. Here are a few more of my more favorite Star Wars sets. I just can't bring myself to part them out. I love them too much.
Another shot of the reading room showing the 'Toy Table' with...more Star Wars sets! You can also see the Giant Castle Chess Set below the table and Stacy's Zoltar machine on the litte end table to the right.
Well, that's it. How'd it measure up Mr. Shaddix? Oh and kids...this is why you go to college. ;-)

I'm liking your advice right now. I was accepted to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York and I am thinking about going for mechanical engineering. May I ask what branch of engineering you went into to amount all these Lego bricks? -Sam
Hey Sam! I'm a Composite Materials Engineer and I currently work in the thermoplastics side of the composites industry. My company produces material for a wide variety of applications, but I specialize in defense and aerospace business development. :-) |

Dude one question, How can you have unopened sets? And how do you afford all this? I mean when I get a new set I like build it the first minute I have time. And you have like sets just laying every were...I am so Jealous...
How do I have unopened sets? Basically, I just don't have enough time to build the sets between MOC-ing and all the other non-LEGO stuff I do. As for affording this...4 years of college with a 3.95 GPA,a REALLY good engineering job, and no kids. Get a good education...that's my best advice. :-) |

Do you have any idea how many pieces are in your collection?
Somewhere between 400,000 and 500,000. In just sets, we have over 350,000 pieces. Our Bricklink orders add another 75,000-100,000. Then we purchased a few bulk lots on Ebay and at garage sales that we never counted or inventories. So, between 400,000 and 500,000 pieces is a conservative estimate. |

There isn't a rating or even words that can express the levels of awe and jealousy one feels after seeing this. Unfortunately my beautiful wife has told me in no uncertain terms that she will never be an AFOL or Volkswagon lover, which is fine, so long as she allows me my sick obsessions. Must not suck to be you... |

You know, I probably coulda gotten it a lot more accurate if I bothered to look at this page while I was building your lair instead of just going from memory... but then again, we already discussed that I'm just too darn lazy for that. Oh, and BTW... yeah, still jealous. |

Like OMG this is so cool! I've got an idea, when you're going to "retire" and stop playing with lego you could sell it all on BrickLink you would be a MILLIONAIRE $$$$$ :) Very good pics and I want to have a room like that in my house, BTW is that your basement?
'Retire' and 'stop playing with LEGO' are words that should not be used in the same sentence together. I'll be playing with LEGO bricks until my old arthritic hands won't move any more. :-)

The collection is good, all that space to stretch it out in is better, having a partner who shares your addiction and understands that Lego needs to take over the house is best.
Well said Mr. Young. I couldn't agree with you more. I am a lucky guy on a whole host of levels. Having a spouse who is as into LEGO as I am is nothing short of completely awesome. |

I like the layout. Nice to have a large space devoted to the hobbies and it looks like you guys clean too. Man, my whole house looks like a warehouse. I must get organized. So far my lego has been in both bedrooms, the attic and now it's taken over the livingroom. That's where my favorite appliance is. The TV. Must get some pics now that I have almost done sorting my bricks out the way I want. I'm so lazy and hang out on the pc too much to get anything done quickly. see ya. garth |
