Halo 3 Mongoose
A barely-armored engine on four wheels, the M274 "Mongoose" ULATV is a highly impractical vehicle, but still fun to ride. Seats one crazy driver and one unfortunte passenger.
About this creation
posted 01/10/2009

Ah yes, the M274 Mongoose ULATV. When it didn't show up in Halo 2,
everyone raised a fuss, so it ended up in the sequel. The vehicle, which
is pretty much an engine on four wheels and nothing else, is of
questionable tactical value in combat situations. Actually, it's highly
impractical and typically only sees use in "race" gametypes that require
it, when transporting a flag quickly across a map, or when the player is
attempting to get a certain achievement.

A lot of people have asked me why I never made a Mongoose before now,
seeing as it is such a small and simple vehicle. Well, that's the problem:
small doesn't mean simple; it means complicated in order to get accuracy
and detail in such a compact size. And when you're done, it doesn't look
like much work could have gone into it.

Well, despite what you may think it looks like, it took me the better part
of a day to build this little sucker. I changed the wheels three or four
times (it seems every time I use LEGO wheels that they're always too big
or too small...), the nose twice, and the back end took me forever to get
right at all. I also had to order the clear 2x2 tile from Bricklink
because I just cannot be satisfied with using a solid colored piece for a
windshield. As the Monitor would say, "Unacceptable! Simply unacceptable!"
The front end may look similar to other LEGO Mongooses (mongeese?) you've seen around
the web. Because, hey, it's the best way to do it, IMO.

The wheel axles can rotate slightly so that the vehicle may be "posed" for
cooler action shots. You can also use this feature to "turn" the vehicle,
even though it leans in the opposite direction from which it is turning,
and the wheels tend to jam when doing this...

I intended to make headlight decals for the Mongoose (by the way - if the
Warthog is shortened to the 'hog, does that make the Mongoose the
'goose?), but I wasn't sure if they would blow over well, and they always
ended up looking unsettlingly like a pair of eyes. I still might go back
and add some later.

I finally got the Mongoose Mowdown achievement when playing Lone Wolves on
the Isolation map. I just drove the 'goose around throughout the game
until I finally hit a guy in just the right way to kill him. Getting that
achievement is like a lesson in the proper usage of the Mongoose. In other
words: don't try to run people over with it. You're just wasting your
time.

Side-by-side with the Ghost. Be sure to check them out in action in my Capture the Flag diorama!

Hey Justin, again, great work on the mongoose. I also really like your new chopper. I never thought that I would see a successful MOC of a chopper, because of its complexity. If you have the time, you should check out my new Hornet (the one I told you I was building ages ago, and just finally put online). I think you will be impressed with it. Keep up the great work, and heads up, I'm about to make a VERY large order off of your site within the next couple of months. -Joaquin

Why do all your spartans have the same shoulders? It looks accurate to the game, but I'm pretty sure not everyone uses Mark VI. Mabye you could use the bottom part( the wrist decal) and put different decals for the top.

yeah nice design, so u finally got live congrats.and i also agree that that acheviment is hard to get its satisfing when u wear the scout shulders that come with getting it. the easyest way to get that that i have found is when ledgendary brawl is duble exp on avalanch, just use the huge man cannons for extra boost.

Nice 'goose dude, I agree with you on the thing about small creations being impractical. I'm trying to build a model of my paintball gun, the Invert Mini, and to make a long story short, it's as small as I can make it unless I cut some pieces and it's taller than the minifig when i stand it upright. anyway, awesome model, you're my favorite lego builder guy in the entire world, 5/5

Just so you know Scorp, someone has instructions for your mongoose on MOCpages .. but it was before you made instructions for it, so he didn't try to take away your profit or something. If you want the name of the person and you don't want anyone else to know, just tell me on one of my MOCs or something.

Well, I've been waiting a while for you get the ball rolling on some new MOCs, looks like you finally hit the bricks. Great job on the overall shape of the mongoose, and the turning wheels are a great addition for some of the action shots. The best part is how it is fully 100% minifig scaled, in other words, the minifig can drive it, fit perfectly inside it, and not take away the detail of the build. Since it is critical for the builder to choose his (or her) pieces wisely when building small scale, this would make this, believe it or not, a difficult build. You got to down perfectly, although I might suggest not using the clear 2x2 stud for the windshield as it makes the front look blocky, just by a bit. So yeah, great job overall. -Dylan
