Eurobricks Star Wars vehicle contest competition 2009 - 1st prize large category winner.
About this creation
The AV-7 Antivehicle Cannon, also called Republic Artillery Gun or Clone Artillery Cannon, was a repulsorlift self-propelled artillery unit used by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars. The vehicle could be operated by one clone trooper in a seat on the side of the gun and had a chamber for refilling shells to the side of the lower chassis.
AV-7 is one of my favourite Clone WArs vehicles and I'd wanted to build it since seeing the Clone Wars movie. Initially I got as far as while as building just a leg... and didn't progress any further for months! When I saw the Eurobricks contest it spurred me on, building and photo'ing the model in in the space of a few evenings. This is one of the hardest models I've ever attempted to build by far and took loads of fine tuning to get it right. Since taking the photos I've applied a few modifications internally to make it sturdier.
Many thanks again to everyone who voted me to win in the contest.

Many thanks for the further great comments everyone! I'm afraid the chances of me making instructions for this are pretty slim as I tend to use any precious LEGO building time for just that - LEGO building. However if I have time I might be able to take a few partially disassembled shots... but please don't hold your breath waiting! I've got a few creations on the go at the moment, including another large and prominent vehicle featured at Christophsis. Did I say vehicle? Maybe I meant droid... |

Thanks for the comments everyone, much appreciated! In answer to Viper, I worked on this for few hours every night for 3 nights including gathering reference pictures (not many of those about!) and building. I'd found out about the competition late on a Sunday and the deadline was the following Thursday! The main body of the AV-7 is quite a bold, cylindrical shape, so it took me a good part of that time working out how to construct it and make the legs sit within so they could sustain the weight. At one point I dropped model and almost had to rebuild the whole thing! |
