MOCpages trailer for the second installment of Apocalypsis - a series of episodes recounting the spiritual journey of a young man.
About this creation
PREVIEW FOR APOCALYPSIS
EPISODE II
THE CONFLICT WITHIN
A flickering torch pierced the darkness, and with a soft “whoosh” it rose to the lip of a candle holder overhead. Firelight illuminated a hooded figure below to reveal the sombre face of young man. He chanted quietly to himself as he circled the hall and lit the candles. His low, soft voice chased across the ceiling and walls of the empty hall to echo back to him like a ghostly, muffled chorus of hissing whispers.
This had been his routine since childhood and part of his shamanistic training; to light the candles before dawn, and to speak the ancient words of prophecy over and over again. Every day was very much like another, spent in quiet reflection, study, and prayer. He was kept from the suffering masses that came to pray at the temple, and the bloody turmoil of the tribal wars that lay beyond the temple halls were unkown to him. He was sequestered, and protected.
But a new day would soon be dawning, one long anticipated and feared by all of the great religions. It would awaken a powerful force within him, and set him on an inward journey that in turn would shake the very foundations of human history. And the storm that was about to descend would change him, and the world…forever.
I'm admiring the rich wall and column carving which nevertheless does not jump out and interfere with the space in the room. The choice of color bands also betray your artistic eye.
Each picture is a masterpiece, be it in lighting effects, LEGO display or LEGO building detail! Can't wait till this begins, but until then, 5/5 for your LEGO skill! Keep it up.
Mr. Kelso, sir, how do you get music files into a moc? I might be having a moc coming out some time and i think that some drmatic music may highten the ausomeness of it. If you could say how or even whare to go to learn to preform such would be greatly appriciated.

I don;t know how many people have asked you this but since when have you been building Lego? Because i know a person has to have amazing skill to pull of masterpieces like this!!
Thanks! Nice of you to say. I had them when I was a kid, and then came out of a 25 year dark age in 2007.

Hey Mark. Awesome job (again) but I was just wondering how you're able to get music to play automatically from playlist.com on this page. I've tried, and it never worked, so I'm stuck using youtube videos for music. Whats your secret?
Unfortunately, I can't say. I'm not trying to be evasive; it's just that Sean asked us not to post anymore MOCs with music. I've got a grandfather clause of sorts with this project since I started it before the ban, but I promised I'd no longer include music in new posts, and wouldn't share the info on how to do it with others. A shame, really, because it's a fun addition to the MOCs, but Sean has good reasons for the ban, and I support him on it.

Alright Mark, I'm not sure if an E-mail would have been more appropriate, but I have to ask you a quick question. How were you able to post music even though embedded and stylesheets are not allowed? I've been trying to post some for a few months now from www.playlist.com, and it's not working out. If you can let me in on the secrets, that would be great! Thanks -Dylan
Hey, Dylan! I responded to you in a personal email, you should get it shortly.

Kind of makes you think... good work. The design is really stuning. Listen, combine patience, these good cenarios and a tripod with a good camera, you may make animations. Trust me, it takes work, but it pays off in the end.
"I wish you a life prosper with LEGOs and good MOCs!"

Let's see here... *Shuffles through cards*
Well, here goes. I think you should add Micheal Jasper to your list, for incredible use of pieces, and just plain awesomeness. No guts here!

Yup, yup, yup! Jasper's stuff is killer! He's on my favs list for sure.
That's a beautiful place just perfect- can you check out my star wars clone base please, it's not enough to compete this though- but it take me two weeks to complete it and i would appreciate if you too would check it out...

Hey Mark. You commented on Dax Olesa's "Into the Unknown" right? Well, Dax and I have worked on the idea of the theme. My W.I.L.L.O.W. was the first moc in it. It's called Terraforge. I would like to know your opinion on the idea. Is it alright with you if I E-mail you the guidelines for the theme? On another note, will there be a third Apocalypsis after this? This is really one of the most beautiful sets you've built.
~S.K.
Thanks, Sterling...but this is just the work in progress. Part two actually includes multiple MOCs and a story. It should be out this summer, and there will probably be four more episodes at least after that. Meanwhile...by all means, send me the idea for the theme. I'd be glad to give you my thoughts: mark@markkelsoart.com

Thats amazing! The scene is very well done! The light, the fig, the "dio" its all perfect! I like a real scene! Good job! By the way, could you check my stuff some day? Thanks!
Awesome build Mark! This isn't even finished, and it surpasses anything i've ever built! I can't wait to see the finished product!
Can you check out my Venator? I'd appreciate it.

You sly dog! I knew you wouldn't let us down on this. The detail on the courtyard scene is mindblowing and your use of lighting and complimentary music sends a shiver down my spine. Unless I'm missing something - we've no idea in which time period this crazy story was set yet and that's certainly keeping me on the edge of my seat.
It's so frustrating to think that you have such a big collection but only one minifig. It's sad really... ;)

PS - What are you using as texture on the back wall on the second "widescreen" shot? You MUST tell me!
Man, this is astounding! If used right, unusual spacing, shapes, and part use can really make for a great moc, and you hit it right on the head. The lighting is amazing and adds so much to the tone of the moc, as well as the music. It felt like I woke up from a dream or trance when it turned off to post this comment. Amazing work.

Holy crap! And I mean that in the most flattering way possible. This is spectacular!
The detail here is absolutely amazing, and your photography/lighting really bring the scene to life. I love the altar area and especially the wall behind it. Can't wait for more!!

Man, the way you use your parts is just amazing! But do I really have to wait until summer?
Oh, by the way, it looks like you forgot a column on the left side. Am I right?
I hope my MOCs will ever be as good as yours. Well, for the last months I´ve been building a base. Looks quite well. I hope you will leave me a review then.
1) sorry, but yep...summer's end at that. 2) Not really. I haven't decided yet whether to put a cap on the underside or add another pillar. Jury's still out on that one. 3)Love to see the base! Be sure to let me know when it's finished and you've posted it.

Mark - It is so nice to see you building large scale and it not being space. I keep going back to this every few hours just to make sure I saw it right. This is some stellar work here buddy.
~dave
Where do I start? Your background music and the lighting on the pics... Epic, primeval, touches us in a naughty spot of our souls. Using barrels for pillars, you beautiful rat illegitimate offspring of a female dog.
This whole MOC and its presentation scares me to the point of asking the man sitting next to me at the public library's public use computers to hold me, comfort me, tell me it will be alright.
Mark, adding to the comments below this is absolutely stunning. The details are brilliant, and so is the character. I think that making it all stud-less (for the most part) will pay off in the long run, but the thing that really got me here is the atmosphere. The word choice in the story, the lighting, and the music combine to capture a certain mood/setting that can only be found in very few creations. Breathtaking. -Dylan
Whoa, the atmosphere here is absolutely amazing! The build itself is wonderful, of course, but everyone please, please, PLEASE take note of how crucial lighting, photography, and presentation are when posting a MOC. Stunning work, Mark.
Saw this last night - a real treat for the eyes. I'm particularly drawn to the support pillars with the lion's head base. The color variations and the use of the small barrels is pure gold. The lighting of the MOC enhances the tone of your story and the vast amount of detail in the sanctuary had me saying, "Pie Iesu Domine. Dona Eis Requiem," and then hitting myself with a board.

The SNOT work and lighting make the pictures so realistic you'd swear they were from a movie or a rendered image from 3D studio. The music is brilliant. You've set a new standrard for MOC presentation and I don't think anyone is gonna outdue you for a long time, or alteast until I'm done with my next project. :)

Hmmm... I love the candles, floor, detailed walls, BUT!, I think you should add some creepy plants. That would make it more like there weren't any people or something. I hope I helped you.
Amazing lighting, excellent building. I can't wait for the finished MOC!

Wow Mark, this is an amazing build! All the SNOT put into the floor looks great, the lighting really captures the spookiness of the build and the torch effect looks awesome! Did you photoshop it? But anyway, this is probably one of your best mocs yet! I can't wait until the next one!

nice build Mark - bone up a little more on your Photoshop skillz.
I'm writing this post with vocal commands to my computer because I can't type on account of the sight of this masterpiece causing me to melt off of my chair, collapsing into a gooey puddle on the floor. -Freela
You're something else! you just took me to another world with this amazing creation... and if anyone doubt about LEGO being an art, here's the proof... great work all around, Mark >>> peace.. Firas
I got some conflict within, but I think that's lunch. Nice looking room. I do like those columns you mention, great texture. Looking forward to the second part from you and my lunch settling down. Hopefully the latter before you finish part 2. see ya. garth
Thanks for the nice words, everyone. JD and Jeroen - the wall patterns were simple, actually. Nothing more than these: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=30646a . Lee, I'll email ya with the info...it's a bit long for the comments section here.
stunning! this puts the bar pretty high for us newby's... watch your head though, something 's missing... :) and i'm also curious about those windows behind the altar, i can't figure them out, very frustrating :§
Remember what I told you this morning about Bob being there for you? Looks like I may need him now. (sorry for the "in-joke" there everyone, but MOCpages just won't allow that kind of language here. but if it's any consolation, I'm sure Mark is laughing out loud right now. Rest easy in that thought.) This is one of those time when "Awesome work" just doesn't cover it ya know? Remind me to grovel at your feet at Brickworld. ~ Chris.
Every time I think I'm getting "good", you have to go and post something that blows my mind. =) Absolutely fantastic! I'm almost afraid to see the finished version. How was the wall behind the alter constructed? The spider-web design is most impressive.
This is gorgeous Mark, simply gorgeous. I could spend all day point out the elements that I love, but really it is a gestalt experience (but aren't they all). I even wanted to throw synergy in there as well, but I will stop butchering the English language. Lee.
Quoting Caleb Cutlass-Crocodile Blanchet
'BOUT DANG TIME! Wow, this is lookin' GREAT! I can't wait 'till it's finnish! The music is?
The music is a solo piece by Lisa Gerrard, lead vocalist for Dead Can Dance. Their music was an early inspiration for the concept of the story line, and will be featured throughout the series.
Amazing light effect, the light coming from that torch, really nice, also very nice pictures, the hall is amazing, very detailed walls and floor, steps and its size...why, I never built something that big, my biggest castle ever is smaller then that hall, fantastic job
Ya know, I think this is what the apocalypse is all about. Not zombies or something that makes a good video game; something more... serious. Your stories are so meaningful and excellently built! I love that really wide shot of the chamber. And, man! You have a LOT of tiles! Great Work, I'm looking forward to the next part!
Quoting Giovanni Seynhaeve
another great build, Mark, not to mention your lighting skillz; or is that photoshopping? just curious really but why are there two pillars missing on the second pic? hm?
Thanks, Gio. To answer a couple of your questions...some lighting work (using birthday candles) and some minimal photoshop. The candle light really did most of the work, though. And as for the pillars: that's the current design of the hall. I'm leaning towards either adding more columns under that section, or capping it in some fashion. Right now it's "hanging" a bit too much, but we'll see.

Wow, The first one was incrdible and now I can't wait to see what you pull out for the second one, you've got me hooked Mr. Kelso. I just can't wait! ~T
