Things have been going slowly lately, but I've managed to get some more done : bonnet, lights, roof frame.
About this creation
Hi,
Sorry things have been going slowly... I've been very busy and a lot of [non-lego] things have happened; and unfortunately that's not going to change until around the end of june...
I didn't actually want to add another build diary yet, as I didn't think enough had been done to justify it; but seeing how long ago the last one was, and how far away the one after this will be, I thought I'd post the progress anyway to keep you ticking ... just keep it mind that it's nothing too special, just a few bits and bobs here and there.
Nothing to do with it, but for those following the build diary of my 1929 Bugatti Type 46, it's nearly done; wheel arches/wings/whatevers are done, but unfortunately for the same "real life"-is-keeping-me-too-busy reasons, I won't be able to do the finishing touches of that until end june aswell (which is silly as there are only about twenty more parts I need...)
Anyway, back to the Lambo, here's a quick run-down of what's been done :
- front and back light 'casings' . All 4 lights still need the electrics done, and the rear lights need their trans-red 'shells' built over them. I won't bother making trans-clear shells.lenses/whatevers for the front lights as it'll only look messy; and the lights won't shine through very good. Thin air looks more transparent than a mess of trans-clear lego bricks.
- roof frame. Nothing special, just a rough shape made out of technic. I've got a zoomed in photo to show how I made the joint for the front windscreen. There's a removable targe top, which really does decrease structural strength, but I wanted to make this lego car as near to the real thing as possible - so it's got a targa top. I'll need to find a way to reinforce the front windscreen as any weight added to it just weighs it down, visibly. The rear boot/trunk still needs to be made, as do the frames for the doors (then all framework will be finished).
- front bonnet. First yellow bit to be placed onto the car - yay ! Underneath, I made a small "floor" similar to that of the car's interior. The free space under the bonnet has no real purpose so we'll make the most of it to store the battery boxes for the electrics, and other junk you don't really want visible.
- No real importance, but I added some black panels on the front, under the bonnet (where the grill would be if it had one) , to be the black 'empty bits' in the gaps on the front bumper (as it looked better than technic framework) . I suppose you know what I'm on about ? not easy to find the right words for some of this stuff...
I also made the black panel between the two back lights, and made the number plate for the fun of it.
I chose the directory for this, having no other real choice, as 'large scale vehicles' . Seeing as some people put 12 wide cars in there, I was wondering if they should make a category called 'ridiculously large scale vehicles' or something like that...
- Dan
P.S. If you are looking to buy lego for your creations, I would like to recommend the following Bricklink lego shop ; "About Town, Castle & Train" ( http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=stacey_love )
I personally know the shopholders, and they are very nice, devoted people. They are currently sponsoring 100% of my 1/3 Lamborghini project, providing all of the parts; and have made various other donations to other models I have made.
The store has a wide selection of parts (over 600,000!), at good prices, and offer an exceptional, fast service (no tax or dodgy exchange rates, next day postage, etc). you won't be disappointed !

WOOOOOW this is going to be big, if you will continue it. can you tell us when the next build diary comes cuz its now almost end of august
Essentially: the next build diary will come when people start donating unneeded parts, that can be used on the project.
I have a fair few, but not nearly enough myself; the guy who started the idea decided his money was better spent elsewhere, and being a student I don't have any money of my own to put into it. So sadly, it's only going to advance if others contribute in some way or another.

Hi dan, this is absolutely amazing!!! I can't wait to see it completed! the good thing with your models is that because of the sheer scale of them, you can put shedloads of detail into them and make them perfect :)
As I am quite new to mocpages, and your contests are always successes, I am making a contest and I was wondering if you could help me... I am stuck of what to put on the homepage of the group, what rules to put in place etc...
Please let me know if you would be able to help me in any way, and if so, I will invite you and make you admin :)
Thanks
Harry G
Thank you very much, and no problem at all :)
It might be easier to talk directly, instead of leaving somewhat unrelated comments on models - my e-mail adress is ibeatgodzilla (at) gmail dot com.

Quel projet ambitieux!

ok ok ok ok !!!!! but WHEN it will be done this master piece ???!!!!
Well, to be quite honest, it hasn't been touched for months due to the funding being cut off. To put it quite bluntly, the project will only carry on when we get more funding - whether this is done by donating money, lego parts (I can give a pretty good list of parts needed) or finding additional sponsorship from, say, a bricklink lego store, or best of all, all three - then, I'll be able to carry on.
I've got the skills to build the model, but being a 19 year old university student I don't have the money to advance the project myself :(
On the bright side, the first year is coming to an end and next year I'm staying in a much bigger place - so if I do get additional sponsorship I'll be able to bring the model over and work on it from there (as opposed to waiting until I get home in the holidays)
If you - and anybody else reading this - want to see the project advance, any help will be appreciated either by some sort of donation/sponsorship from yourself or by passing the word around - of course everybody that contributes via donation or sponsorship will be, when the complete model will be (eventually) unveiled duly made known, thanked and I'll make sure to help advertise their werbsite/ lego store wherever the model goes :)
Pass the word round, it'd be great to get this going - the more help and sponsors the better.
I'm an honest person so I can guarantee that every cent given to the project will go only towards buying parts for the model and nothing else, and I'm trying to make it as cheaply as possible, buying used parts where possible to save money.
As I said, any and all help is very much appreciated - and of course you will all see what your help and contributions have gone to with the build diaries here on MOCpages !
To get hold of me, my email adress is ibeatgodzilla@gmail.com
In the meantime, happy building everybody ! |

actually the Cala is by Italdesign not Lamborghini, but that doesn't make this build any less epic!
The amount of people who said this... I know Italdesign made this :)
It's still a lamborghini though - I mean you don't talk about a 'pininfarina 406' , you call it a peugeot. Same here - Italdesign designed it, but it's still a lamborghini. |

I think you were single-handedly the inspiration for Lego Company to recently release a Lamborghini. Great work so far.
Not sure if you've answered this before, but what will you use for tires? Will you buy large tires or build your own. Lego doesn't make any tires as big as you need, do they?
Thanks :)
The tires will be made with a combination of bricks and slopes.... a lot of bricks and slopes :)

when you finish the car, before you try rolling the car on its wheels on the floor, I recommend you take as many pictures and videos as possible. I get the strangest feeling that Cala is gonna break up like the lego indiana jones ball on youtube. When you complete, you can get a guiness world record trophy for biggest lego creation not made by the lego company itself or other companies. Why i say this is becuz the lego company have already made a full scale volvo and the mythbusters made a lego ball that broke to pieces like the one on youtube. |

For the wheels and tyres maybe you could build or buy custom ones, but not from Lego. Sometimes tyres from large R/C cars do the job. Maybe you could visit a hardware store and look there in the 'wheel and tyre' section if there is one.
Yes, I could, but that would be cheating ; the challenge is to make it 100% out of lego. |

Haha OK, I think there's a little confusion here :)
So, for the las comment, no, it won't be radio controlled, because nothing short of a real engine could budge this.
For the comment after; "nothing qshort of a real engine *could* power this" ... i'm not actually going to stick in a petrol engine in here haha; it's going to be completely lego, and the engine will just be a lmass of grey bricks made to look as much like the real one as possible; meaning the car won't be powered, but will be just for looks. We'll try and make up for that with other functions where we can :)
I just finished making a James Bond Lotus Esprit submarine if anybody's interested :) |

It's looking very car-like now : )
I do have a question about the wheels though ('Oh no, not another one' I bet you're thinking!):
The tyres- if you place bricks on those click hinges won't they get further away from one another as you get further from the centre of the wheel? I don't know if explained that very well!
I know exactly what you mean :)
We've thought up two different ways to avoid the 'split gap'.
One way consists of building the tires completely out of 1x1 bricks, placed diagonally so the gap is smaller. though, I didn't like this idea so much as I though the tires would be weak and I'd have to put back 1,106 little black bricks eveery time the car gets picked up and set down somewhere else.
The other idea, which I think I'll go with, is to build upbwards normallly with bricks, but also slopes so whenever the gap gets big enough, a slope will come in and fill up the space again. there will be gaps this way, but much smaller. I've done a quick mockup, and it looks fine from a distance. Besides, the tires are black and so are the 'holes' so it'll all blend in :)
Whenever we get back to this project (on hold at the moment due to some difficulties) I'll make the wheels the next thing to stop everybody from saying 'why are they small ?' , and I'll take a close-up photo showing my idea fior eliminating the gaps in the tires.

Looking amazing so far! The car is more curvy in the reference pic though, or are you gonna add the curves in later?
Thanks !
Don't worry, it's going to look as near to the real thing as I can make it :)
Right now it's still at the framework stage - if anything I've been doing too much of the outside, as we're still needing parts for the interior (I haven't even got enough to *start* the interior yet... not looking forward to it, it's 10 times more curvy than the outside of the car)
Take any car - say a nice curvy TVR. Take away the bodywork, and you have an ugly, angled tubular frame to look at. That's the stage this is at right now. The bonnet is one of the only body pieces that's finished, and yes it does look very flat; indeed it is; but I looked at the photos of the car on my computer, and on the real thing, the bonnet's flat too... I think it sort of looks curvy for the curves along the front bumper and windshield, though it is in fact pretty flat.
I'm hoping to get more of this done during the holidays, but things could be going better so this is on hold for the moment...

The wheels are small as they're only about 50% done so far :)
They'll be 6" + tires when complete (now they're about 5" and not tires yet)
As for a 50's merc; hey, why not ?
Though I'd like to finish my Bugati first (95% done) ; though the main problem now is time; so much is happening at the moment, and when all that's over, I have my big school exams (I'm only 18...) so I'll have to put lego aside and get on with 'real life' for a while... though I'll be back at it around the end june :)

chill out, dude lol - this is only the frame - it's the rough shape, made for strength - so of course it looks like a pile of technci bricks right now.
Once the frame is done, we'll start making the panels, and that's where the curves come in; but you need something straight and sturdy underneath - this - to work on first.
It's taking shape quick, but it's faaaaar from finished...

Don't worry, of course they are :)
We had to make them that size with the 'click-hinges' as that was the biggest we could make them by angling them at 'one click' each.
To make them bigger (6" + tires) all we need to do is build upwards on them; easy :)
