A cobbled-together dirigible for riding the waves of the wind.
About this creation
November 2005

-----

It's always fun to build smaller mocs every once in a while, and this one was no exception. And I got to use brown and tan, which until I made the tank droid were all but ignored in my collection.

As with the floating island it accompanies, I'd been hoping to dabble in the world of fantasy mocs for some time and ideas for a flying thing flittered away in the recesses of my mind for months.

I don't have the parts necessary to build a big blimp-like flyer, so originally I'd decided to build a little one-man winged craft like the awesome ornithopter that Kevin "Bobafettguy" Blocksidge made.

But when I actually started clicking bricks together, I decided I wanted something with propellors.

See the construction gallery here.

From start to finish there's not much that changed. Two main lobes of the craft were connected by gears and frames. A steering rudder was added for the pilot, who powers the gyrocopter using bicycle-like pedals (an idea first suggested to me by His Honor teh Jonesy.)

I love the vision in my head of this wizard huffing and puffing as he pedals away at the creaking craft, keeping his home-built creation afloat. The lantern swings, leading the way in the dark night sky.

I need to get back to rocket engines and laser blasters before this becomes a habit.

In keeping with my play feature roots the gear can be turned to actually make the propellors turn, and the rudder can be turned left and right.

In anticipation of the people who don't like the small wings, I just want to point out that this is not a glider craft that requires big wings to soar.

It's held in the air by the propellors on top and the small wings are just stabilizers to keep it from tipping to either direction.
