Drachenfels - bailey first gate and wall walk
Part 1 first gate and wall walk
About this creation
Vorburg (bailey) - the first gate

Let us start our journey at the first gate of the bailey.
Most castle gates were simple openings in a wall. I have created a gothic arch, as the bailey is supposed to date back to the early 14th century. Above the arch is a hoarding, a wooden construction that allowed the defenders to extend their possibilities to protect the gate from destruction by firing arrows or throwing small boulders at possible enemies.

There are two arrow slits in the hoardings. Three others in the wall itself accompany them. One of them, right to the hoarding in the tower, is pointed downwards, to improve the protection of the gate.

The gate itself has got two valves. At the back of the gate are two holes in the wall, which may carry a beam. This beam locks the valves.

A wooden wall walk dominates the back of the gate. Through it the hoardings and the tower are accessible. A staircase leads down to a timber-framed building, the guardhouse.

The guardhouse has got a fireplace and a garderobe - a medieval toilet. I will attach a wooden down-pipe later, as it is shown at Marksburg castle.

The ground floor is made out of stone, because it prevents the decay of the timbered first floor.

Through the guardhouse one can enter the wall walk of the bailey.

This gate was strongly influenced by Guttenberg castle:

Quoting Vlad van Hoek Impressive scale... I like what this castle is becoming! Some of the walls are rather plain though, but truth be told, it does fit the style. Just one question, how did you make the gothic arch, did you cut up two half-arches?
Yes, I used an X-Acto knife.
