The Empire's newest starfighter, and a shocking departure from the standard TIE fighter...
About this creation
Built: November, 2005. Redesigned: January, 2006.
The Voidfighter is a radically different Imperial starfighter which was deployed in small numbers shortly after the events of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
During this time, a young military commander by the name of Thrawn was moving quickly up the ranks of the Imperial academy. He was a member of the species known as the Chiss, and the Emperor began to take great interest in this young man and his heritage.
As Thrawn ascended slowly through the ranks, the Emperor made contact with his homeworld, and the Empire began to work closely with the Chiss. Each entity traded technology back and forth, influencing each other's politics and creativity.
At this time, the Empire was beginning construction on the second Death Star. With so many resources devoted to the gargantuan project, it was no wonder why a small group of scientists were able to carry on certain experiments without the Emperor's knowledge.
Working with secrets gleaned from the Chiss, the team began work on what they came to call the Voidfighter . It was to become their Empire's secret weapon in the esclating battle with the Rebel Alliance.
What made the Voidfighter so devastating was its stealth abilities. Based on Chiss technology, it allowed the ship to be rendered completely invisible to the naked eye, blending it in with the blackness of space.
Its staggering stealth abilities, coupled with its extensive network of thrusters and powerful weapons, made the Voidfighter incredibly quick and agile in space combat.
The Rebels found out about the ship on a routine reconniassance mission, when their entire team was wiped out in a matter of seconds, by unseen assailants. Quickly realizing the gravity of the situation, their spies recovered data which lead them to an abandoned hangar where the Voidfighter had been designed.
After many failed attempts at capturing one of the bizarre fighters for research, and after many deaths, they at last got their hands on one...
I built this ship for a contest on FBTB.net. The challenge was to create a starship based on a story written by the Admins, which gave vague hints as to the vehicle's appearance and capabilities. This is what I came up with. I failed spectacularly in the contest, but since then, I have been tweaking it endlessly until I got what you see before you now. After all this time, I am at last pleased with the results. Enjoy, and feel free to email me with any questions you may have.
Here you can see the ship's weapons in the tips of the wings. They consist of four heavy laser cannons (two in each wing) and two warhead launchers (two in each wing), each with a magazine of three torpedoes.
This is a very intricate model, full of greebs. However, I have two major complaints: I cannot picture a "scorpion" ripping through space with barrel-roll and half-loop stunts, also, the tail is too small. Great improvements overall, I'd see it more favorably as a hovercraft. Did you build this fighter with the contest in mind?
