A light patrol frigate - based off of the design of the Okinawa class Frigate from the game "Starfleet Command"
About this creation

Statistics
Crew: 22
Armament: 6 light phaser banks, two photon torpedo launchers
Shuttlecraft: One Assault Shuttle
Concept Notes:
Interplay's 1999 game "Starfleet Command" features the Okinawa class Frigate, light but maneuverable, great for hunting down Orion Pirates or tangling with the occasional Klingon Bird of Prey. The first time I played that game - I wished I could translate the sense of speed and style into LEGO, something impossible at the moment.
Earlier this year, I dug the game out, blew the dust off of the CD cover, and played it once more -- and again felt the urge to try and translate that ship into bricks. This time, I thought I could give it a try. After much testing, I found that the only wedge plates that would fill a 360 degree circle were the 3x12 plates. Thus began a massive bricklink order that kicked off this build
Because I am compulsive about including "functional" interiors to the ships I build, scale dictated that this would be a much smaller ship than the Okinawa, which was 77m wide (about 252 studs wide at the scale I'm using...) -- so it became a light patrol frigate with roughly the same lines as the Okinawa.

Overall view of the saucer section -- a very difficult build from a stability standpoint. The saucer is held up by four pillars and the engineering hull. The center of the saucer section is the transporter room, ringed by a series of small rooms; lavatories, storage, damage control, weapons locker, shower, captain's quarters, and first officer's quarters.

The crew mess & food replicator. Fortunately, they still serve pizza.

The portside officers quarters

The Crew dining area / common area

Officer's Mess & conference room

Recreation Room - with zero-G billiards :)

Medical Bay & Science Lab

Transporter room

Bridge

Brig - as a patrol frigate, handling light pirate ships would be one of its primary duties

Airlock

Shuttlebay

Bridge (facing aft)

Engineering

Cargo Deck

Warp Core & Secondary Engineering

Photon Torpedo Chamber & Launch Rails
Design Notes
I used information from the game and from Memory Beta to help understand the shape of the Okinawa

I thought I'd reviewed this already. I'm such an idiot. Oh well, it's here now. I love this thing, it really is inspiring. There's an incredible amount of detail, and the lighting in the shuttle bay and whatnot gives this a realistic feel. Well done!! |

While I am far from a star trek fan (dumbest ship designs ever), this is one of the most awesome spaceship models I've seen. Your mastery of brick to construct such a shape is quite inspiring. A++! |

This ship is by far the most impressive Star Trek MOC I have ever seen. While many other Star Trek MOC designers focus on perfecting either the exterior or interior of a creation, this ship clearly excels in both areas. Above all else, it is functional. This type of design is what every Star Trek MOC builder should strive for. |

Great MOC. Im normally a snob when it comes to interiors that are not to scale with the exterior but I cant help but be impressed with this MOC. I especially like the bridge interior and the exterior nacelle supports. |

Hey congrats on being front paged over at Eurobricks. Must have been a slow day and they got tired of complaining about the new Blockade Runner set... That aside, this totally awesome MOC of yours deserves some recognition.
Thanks - I was totally blown away when my friend called me to let me know about being featured there. I've been a long time lurker at Eurobricks, at least of the front page, but it seemed a bit self-serving to finally create an account just then, but the response was truly encouraging. It was a really fun project to work on. |

This is a fantastic model--I love all the details, even down to including the toilets in the brig! I'm sure those captured pirates will appreciate the courtesy.
Great job all the way around. Faithful to Star Trek, but still buildable and playable and just lots of fun. This is what LEGO is all about.

Awesome, but you realize Okinawa was a huge and horrible battle, the last island in the chain to Japan. Usually it is a thing-class ship, not place-class.
Hey Marty -
In researching the ship they used in the game, that's the class name I found. It's not unusual, by the way, for ship classes to be named after places or battles. The Navy has 'Tarawa' class assault ships, 'Iowa' class battleships (or they did). 'Ohio' class SSBN's, etc. Individual ships are sometimes named after people, cities, or states. The Samuel Roberts is a tribute to a like-named WWII Destroyer Escort. |

Impressive build, probably the best Trek build ever. Being a fan of Star Trek since the original series, the detail is extremely impressive! Top ranks all the way, bet you’ll hate to disassemble it. I don’t think I could bring myself to ever take it apart. |

I've never liked Star Trek stuff, as a true SW fan, but this build is really magnificient. Huge vessel with detailed interior, instantly recognisable as a ST starship. And to be honest, it looks much better than plastic-looking models seen in movies ;)
AWESOME work. Now go build an Imperial Star Destroyer to kick Fed's butts :D |
