MOC olympics round 1 - Steef de Prouw vs. Dan Church
Monsieur Grenouilles jungle walker Araignee II (ca. 1895).
About this creation
I'm competing against Dan Church
Category: Steampunk
Group: 2 (bracket 2B)

Click on the images for a bigger and possibly better look.

The Araignee II is a steam powered jungle walker, commissioned by French nobleman M. Grenouille. Here we see the Araignee trudging through the jungle, in search of new animal species.

First, let's meet the international crew (left to right): 'Baconface' Morton (pilot), Manuel Rana (local guide), M. Grenouille (expedition leader), Petitpattes (ship pet), Heinrich Frosch (engineer), Lord Fairfax (biologist), Taco (ship pet), Guido Kikker (gunner) and Jean Baptiste Grenouille (navigator).

*CHOONK* *HISS* *CHOONK* *HISS*

The Araignee walking through a clearing in the forest.

In this high shot, you can see some of the inner workings of the walking mechanism through the floor plates (I don't know why I bothered really).

Detail shot of the leg.

Oh dear, there's a perfectly unknown species of frog hiding in the bushes, but I don't think they've seen it yet.

Manuel and Guido standing on the lookout.

"Look, when are they going to let me use this gun?"

Jean Baptiste only got this job as a navigator because he's monsieur Grenouille's cousin. Soon, he is going to have to admit to the rest of the group that he doesn't have the faintest idea of where they are.
In the background is Baconface busy piloting this abomination. His steering is steam powered, don't you know.

M. Grenouille enjoying a nice cuppa, while having a civil conversation with lord Fairfax about the creatures of the jungle.

Mmmm electricity made with steam! You didn't think they put coal directly into those lanterns, did you?

Some clearer shots of the vehicle.

Front and backside shot.

There are luggage racks between those chimneys. And some glass jars and barrels to collect species in.

A shot I took during construction, to show the underside more clearly. I like how it looks like an upturned and defenseless beetle in here. I can just imagine his little legs squirming in the air.

Pfew! That's it. My first steampunk MOC!

Woaw! As I can see, the Sail Barge is a really useful set for Steampunk! For your first steampunk creation, I must say that it's excellent! Haha, we frenchies still have this frog-eaters reputation :) Long live Monsieur Grenouille!

M. Grenouille? Petitpattes? XD Going french today, are we? Lol. Araignee... Amazing build! It all loks so awesome, and the color scheme is great, the smoke effect looks cool (even though I've seen it before) And the legs look nice and solid. Great job, again! 6 stars/heads!

Epic win Steef! This is just all sorts of awesome and I don't know where to start. I love the idea of a Steampunk AT-TE style walker. You've mashed up mech and Steampunk so well that I almost wonder if Phipson shouldn't make that a category for next year. Great...no...make that fantastic work!

Very nice. Your humorous commentary was a nice addition to a wonderful steampunk contraption. I too had that category, so I was curious to see what other competitors would do with it, especially when it was a new category. I'd say you've figured it out! Best of luck in the games!

Quoting JT Durante Beautiful work here. I haven't posted up my steampunk MOC's yet, but I am unbeknowst to most a huge fan and builder of SP and I sure love this! Good job, and you deserve to win about everything there is, though I have no idea what the MOC games are. I would have loved to have spotted some steampunk BrickArms, but you're a LEGO purist, right? Anyway, greatest steampunk creation I've seen yet!
Yeah, no brickarms for me. I am perfectly content with the amount of pieces TLC has to offer ;-) If you ever come around to uploading some steampunk sets, please let me know. My interest in this theme has grown a bit bigger since this particular event.

Quoting Topsy Cret I love it! I think a little more... steam machines could have been put in, but still great, great MOC! Good day
Actually, there are five steam kettles on the deck, with tubes and wheels and gauges and everything. But I managed to not post a proper photo of them.

Cool, cheers Chris. I've taught my cats to guard my mailbox with great vigor just for this occasion. They love their little german helmets and boots.

Quoting Crimso Giger Steampunk is not easy for someone who build mostly sleek and futuristic ships, but you've done it very nicely !
Thanks. I think what I like most about joining in this here MOColympics is that is forces me to build quickly (I had to build this within a day due to work related stuff) in a theme I'm not familiar with. It really makes me try out new things.

By crikey, you're right! You know, I was so engulfed in this MOC that I didn't think about all these things. Must've worked on me subconsciously though ;) I knew I heard the name J.B. Grenouille before, haha! :D /edit: Oh, and thank you for the vote. I only just now registered that you are a real judge ;)

Alright, you prove to be a master of yet another theme... I think you have found the very core of what steampunk's really about (at least in my book): futuristic vehicles created with 19th century technology. This is a beauty, pure win. Good luck!
